ok, before you get all excited, this post is not about crossdressing or surprises down under. it is, however, about the rock band women, of which no members are female, hailing from calgary (yes, another canadian band. must be something in the water, eh?). these guys seem to have a pretty good rapport with chad vangaalen, whom a few of them have toured with, and who recorded their album, and whose record label theyre on — flemish eye (well, i dont know if the record label belongs to him, but its the label hes on). did i get all the who/whom/whose and their/there/theyres right? if not, i think its pretty clear that im not big on grammar or punctuation anyway.
todays track is taken off their self titled album released last year. having only given this album a few listens, there are lots of high points and a few low points for me. many of you may have heard the song “black rice”, which is one of the high points along with the track below. slightly less enjoyable for me (although im sure others may love it) is the 4 minute soundscape entitled “woodbine”. i typically dont like these beatless songs that dont seem to change much throughout. even my boys radiohead are guilty of this with their song “treefingers” off kid a. its just a skip track for me. but hey, at least i discriminate against this type of song fairly, even if its released by one of my favorite artists.
the highest note of all on this album for me is the track “shaking hand”, which is all about the guitar for me. i cant get enough of the opening riff and only wish it lasted a little longer throughout the song. but have no fear, as the song progresses, a few other cool guitar riffs enter the scene leaving us entertained and begging for more. i especially like right around the one minute mark when a new guitar riff comes in, only for you to find out moments later that youve actually heard it already layered over the introductory riff. then youve got two more distinct riffs lined up back to back closing out the song. pretty neat stuff.
