the chemical brothers

happy monday. since i already know that today is going to be an insane day, and i also know that im probably really really not in the mood for it right now, ive got the perfect song for both moods. i really like songs that have multiple personalities and this is a great example of that. the song is “asleep from day” by the normally super intense(in a good way) chemical brothers and the vocalist is hope sandoval of mazzy star fame. you may remember mazzy star from such 90s hits as “fade into you” and if not that song, then you definitely remember their cover of the rolling stones hit “wild horses” featured during the infamous roller coaster scene from the movie “fear” starring mark wahlberg and, much to my surprise, a young reese witherspoon. NICOLE 4 EVA.

as for this song, its all about contrasts. it starts out slow, quiet and trancey with sandovals vocals so reverbed they are almost indistinguishable. then the synth comes in and brightens up the sounds a little, and then just as she proclaims that shes got a lot of friends, theres a change in the mood. the bells come in and so does the beat, and before you know what hit you youre in the middle of a mini techno set (aside: is this an analogy that friends are the dance party of life?). and just as quickly as it all began, it fades back into the same subdued dreamworld that it came from. but dont worry, theres still one more crescendo on the way before the track is over. i kinda wish the techno parts were even more extreme, but still, the contrasts are sweet.
