friendly fires – kiss of life
if youve been reading this blog for a while, then it should come as no surprise to you that im a huge fan of british disco-funk-dance rockers friendly fires. hows that for a made up contradictory genre of music? while they were robbed of this years mercury prize, their debut album has become one of my favorites to listen to whenever i need a pick-me-up, and one of those albums that i can listen to from start to finish without even a thought of skipping a song. but the time has come for us to start pining for a new album from them, and the fact that theyve recently released a new single would have been a good sign that a new album is on the way, but after a peek at their website, it seems that the new track is part of an “expanded version” of their debut album
the new single, entitled “kiss of life”, pretty much picks up where their last album left off. while the interspersed “kiss of life” parts are sometimes a bit cumbersome (probably the complete wrong usage of the word), im really digging this song. its definitely a grower, in that you like it a little more each time you hear it. some great little music and/or percussion transitions between verses and choruses too. i remember them playing this in the 90+ degree heat with 90+% humidity at lollapalooza and it definitely got the crowd moving, which is sometimes difficult to do with a new song that nobodys heard before. i clearly remember liking the “do do do do” parts of the chorus laid under the kiss of life vocals and am glad to see that i still like them. and have i mentioned what a great performer lead singer ed macfarlane is? while i dont anticipate a new album until some time in 2010, im glad to see that they are at least staying in the heavy percussion dance area of the music map, because its just something they do too well to change it up now.
