this weeks throwback, “driveway to driveway” by superchunk, whose name is sure to invoke visions of a famous goonie(please, for your own good, click on that link), isnt that much of a throwback really. well, the song was released back in 1994, when i was a mere 11 years old, so i guess it has been around for a while, and definitely long enough to qualify. superchunk, out of durham, north carolina, has been pretty huge in the indie rock world for reasons other than their music. in order to release their music, the band started the merge record label, which just celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a 5 night music fest and is bigger than ever before. its artist roster is a veritable whos who of the indie rock world and theyve signed tons of my favorite artists. pretty awesome for a couple of kids who just wanted to release their music, eh?

as if starting one of the biggest and (in my opinion) best indie record labels wasnt enough, the band has also recorded a song with meatwad for the aqua teen hunger force soundtrack. how cool is that? while you wont be hearing that track today, the track you will be hearing is from their 1994 album “foolish” and in my opinion should be part of any indie rock 101 playlist and its definitely withstood the test of time. id only heard it a few years back when my musical knowledge was severely lacking (now its just regularly lacking since i get most of my random facts from wikipedia and usually know about 1% of what i talk about ahead of time) and i thought it was a brand new song. as many of us can attest, there are not really a lot of songs from the early 90s that could pass a brand new song today. go ahead and take a listen. just a great rock song with a catchy guitar riff, but an important song by an important band.
