electric wire hustle

today weve got a track for you that my former housemates cam and nate would describe as “hot”. electric wire hustle hails from wellington, new zealand and their sound has a little bit of something to keep everyone. there are elements of hip hop, soul, funk, electronic and experimental elements all wrapped up together. theyre currently in the middle of a european tour and i really think they have a good thing going.

“they dont want” has a little something for everyone. it begins with a big horn/string sample (well, i dont know if its really a sample, but its used like a sample) thats almost a bit reminiscent of the opening tunes of kanyes “flashing lights” and then breaks into a marvin gaye inspired soul sound. just when youre getting into the groove of that, it does a complete 180 and goes completely experimental. how do they fit so many genres into one four and a half minute song and still make it all work? cam and nate, this ones definitely hot.

the first part is pretty nice; it got me tapping my shoe against my desk, probably annoying my office neighbor. the second part is cool, but i’m not sure about the (lack of) transition into it. it kind of sounded like this is a free release track, and the second part is their closing credits; i expected something like ‘to learn more about us, visit www. (whatever) .com’ to close it out. i look forward to hearing more from them.
