last tuesday after much debate but no decision, diana, julie and i decided to go see moby at st andrews hall (perhaps my favorite detroit venue). it was my 4th concert in the last ten days after not going to any shows for a month and a half after lollapalooza, and my quality of life had definitely gone way up for those 10 days. in true fashion, we arrived a little late and completely missed opener kelli scarr, but we’d get to see plenty of her because she was performing with moby and sang quite a few songs. im not even sure how many of mobys songs we missed, but im guessing not more than one or two.

my first reaction upon seeing the spectacle up close was “whoa!” and that it was the complete opposite of what i expected. for some reason, i had visions of moby behind a table djing the whole night, which would have been great, but that was not at all the case. we made our way pretty easily to the front of the stage and i saw a full band with drums, keyboards, bass, violin, guitar, and 2 singers, one of which was the opener, kelli scarr, and the other whose name ive been trying to find for the last hour unsuccessfully. its too bad i cant find her name, because she turns out her name is inyang bassey (thanks mimi!) and she has one of the most ridiculous voices ive ever heard in person (in a good way). she sang a bunch of the songs from “play” that i recognized and even had a vocal/guitar battle with moby near the end of the show.

another surprising fact was just how many moby songs i actually knew. i recognized the majority of the songs he and the band played and there were a few covers mixed in as well like “helpess” and “walk on the wild side”, but the two highlights were definitely the closer of the first set, raining again, which got the whole crowd jumping and dancing, and the final song of the night, the rave-inspired “feeling so real”, which got the whole crowd jumpin and dancing even more. the light show was pretty great too. a few photos are mine, but thanks to diana and amber for the others.

after the show, we waited outside for a bit to see if moby would come out to the tour bus because my friend diana wanted to take a bald with black glasses twin pic with moby. we sat in the car and i noticed that kelli had come out to the tour bus, so diana ran out to go talk to her. after exchanging a few words and diana explaining her situation, kelli told her that she didnt really know when moby was coming out to the bus, so diana got back in the car and decided that we wouldnt wait for him.

moments later kelli ran up to our car and motioned for diana to come with her. immediately julie ran out too, and i turned off the car and grabbed the keys and followed (despite the fact that julie was in the drivers seat and i was in the back seat). kelli finally got the attention of the security guard and flashed her all access pass and when he opened the door kelli said “im bringing in two people with me”. diana, julie and i looked at eachother with puzzles looks on our faces, all thinking “but, there are three of us!” we quietly suggested “three people?” to which kelli replied “two”, and i gave diana and julie the go-ahead while i sat in the car.

kelli – ive decided to forgive you for leaving me out in the cold (literally and figuratively), but next time just let the group of 3 friends in, instead of deciding on two!
