sunset rubdown

before we get into todays song, im posting a video that i was fortunate enough to discover yesterday. ive actually already posted this son during my post pitchfork moment of clarity when i realized the brilliance of m83. if you recall in that post, i talked about how this song got the whole crowd going halfway through the m83 set, and how the sun was just in the right spot to electrify all the colors on the stage. and now you get to see it for yourself. i have such vivid memories of this song so its cool to see a nice video of it, but this doesnt even do it any justice.

and here’s the track again just for good measure:

m83 – sitting

onto the REAL song of the day. for the next few days, im going to be bringing you what i call 6 minute epics. these are sort of the centerpieces of each respective album, at least in my opinion, and they are all pretty long songs, but the kind that dont feel like they are just going on and on. in this case, its “idiot heart” by sunset rubdown, one of the numerous wolf parade side projects. this one is led up by spencer krug, one of the most distinctive voices around. while 6 minute songs can sometimes be a bit tedious, this one is not because its constantly pushing forward. it starts calmly enough, but a few minutes in when krug croons “so look at you go”, you realize that its grown into an all out rocker. highly recommend their latest album “dragonslayer”.

Damn M83 was awesome that day! Probably the only group that created as much energy as them were The Flaming Lips, and the lips mostly created their energy via props (making an entrance through a digital vag for example.)
