stevie wonder – uptight (everythings alright)

this weeks saturday throwback is by none other than the living legend stevie wonder. whenever i think of stevie wonder, i usually think of the episode of the cosby show when the crazy huxtable clan got into a car accident with stevie wonder’s limo, and since stevie wonder is such a great guy, he invites them to the studio to record a song made up of random words and noises. my favorite exchange is:
stevie (to theo): now what would you say at a party?
theo (without hesitation): jammin’ on the one.
i mean, what else would you say at a party, right? it must be a new york city thing. i should watch the cosby show more often.
there are a few things that are pretty noteworthy about this classic motown track. the first is that i never knew this was a stevie wonder song. i guess its pretty obvious when you listen to it, but i guess i dont really know who sings most motown songs unless i really think about it. the second and craziest part is that stevie was only 15 when he recorded this. FIFTEEN. are you kidding me? im not going to get into the specifics of how much more awesome stevie wonders life must have been at the age of 15 than mine was at the age of 15, but chances are there was a great disparity.

I think that’s actually Andre Benjamin in that picture, with Lauryn Hill sitting next to him, Ben Wallace in the back right corner, and Brandon Boyd in the far back clapping his hands.
