This one’s been on the list for a long time now. And I think the main reason I haven’t talked about it is because I don’t even know what to say about it. Because I just like it that much. The Dears hail from Montreal, Canada, but before I looked that up, I would have bet money that they were from the UK. Perhaps it’s the voice of lead singer Murray Lightburn or just their overall sound. This tune is from their second album “No Cities Left” released in 2003. “Lost in the Plot” is really a roller coaster ride of emotions, in a way, musically at least. It starts out big and a little dark and a little minor right off the bat, with Lightburn’s voice soft but strong carrying us through, followed by a sudden change that’s much lighter and much brighter, almost turning into a pop song. But we’re only in the eye of the storm, with the song returning to its heavy rock roots where it began, but so much more powerful than ever before. And don’t even compare Lightburn to Morrissey, because I don’t think he could pull off the vocals that Lightburn does at the end of this one.
But, in reality, I hope that you read none of that. Because this is one of those songs that’s so much better if you just listen and don’t try to analyze.
