I’ve been hearing some random tunes here and there from The Joy Formidable quite a bit lately, and while I can’t quite pinpoint their sound, it’s a great mix of light and heavy rock that seems really pure and untainted for some reason. And they also seem to play around quite a bit with interesting time signatures which, as a former band geek, I really appreciate. It’s the little things for me, and it’s amazing how much little things like that can make a song stand out. They’ve just recently released A Balloon Called Moaning in the states which is being labeled as a mini-album/EP and it is definitely on my short list of next albums I will be purchasing. I happen to think “Austere” is catchy as heck with its big bad guitars and the “oh ohhh ohhh”s making their way throughout.
