Steven Ellison could have gotten away with cloning 2008’s Los Angeles for his third Flying Lotus album. It would have been really easy – not to say that Los Angeles was artistically easy, only that “Los Angeles II” would have likely disappointed no one. Even with three different L.A. E.P.’s around, the complacency of following a highly successful sound would have been completely forgivable in this case. But Ellison decided to avoid that shortcut and NOT make the banger after-party album that I, for one, was absolutely hoping for. Cosmogramma heads in completely new directions; it’s 45 minutes of Ellison answering the question, “What is my next step?” And though the experiment doesn’t always have consistent momentum, there is still so much that deserves praise I can’t possibly blame him for pursuing something new.

On a first listen, it sounds like Cosmogramma is all over the place. “Clock Catcher” kicks things off with the album’s dirtiest bass line, only to fade into a shapeless interlude thirty seconds later. Then, in my most brief summary, the second and third tracks bust out into FlyLo’s brand of bebop and German electro, respectively. The entire album is similarly genre-spastic, but it definitely picks up by the fourth track, “Intro / A Cosmic Drama,” which sounds like the album’s real beginning to me. “Zodiac Shit” is the kind of beat I expected Los Angeles II would have sounded like, and the next ten minutes keep things so buttery smooth that I had no idea Thom Yorke was even on “…And the World Laughs With You” until I checked to see if the disembodied voice really was him.

What sticks out through Cosmogramma’s second half, and what I think becomes its greatest strength, is the abundance of guest instrumentalists that expand the sound. There’s harp, synths, strings, saxophone, and a bass that sounds like it was ripped right from 70’s prog rock. Each dissimilar element comes together in a product that isn’t hip-hop, isn’t neo-soul, isn’t Afro-futurist, or any genre that has described Flying Lotus. It straight-up sounds like a reinvention of jazz, and that is why Cosmogramma is a champion moment for Ellison. He is using his beats as a vehicle to bring him back to his jazz heritage, sometimes so far into them that tracks sound like live recordings done in one take. You knew that he’s John Coltrane’s nephew, right? I think Cosmogramma would have pleased Mr. Coltrane greatly.

Cosmogramma isn’t perfect, and I don’t think I will ever say it’s my favorite Flying Lotus album, but there are moments that really make me believe Ellison is poised for further transcendence. Where older material sounded like a one-man show (no doubt one of its strengths), moments in Cosmogramma come off as a group effort. Listen to “Dance of the Pseudo Nymphs” and think about how amazing it would sound as performed by a jazz combo. With Ellison texturing everything together as a bandleader, that performance would probably be chemically harmful to my brain. The most exciting and dizzying question about Cosmogramma is whether it will mark the moment when Ellison revitalized the spirit of jazz, and by extension, whether a cartoon program that aired Squidbillies was integral to that movement. He greatly succeeded in refining his signature, that sound that is distinctly his own, but the implications for his future border on scary.

Cosmogramma showed me that I underestimated the depths that FlyLo’s beat submarine could dive, and Cosmogramma is the sonic equivalent of Ellison steering it past all the pretty coral reefs and plunging towards the deep-sea trenches of his influences and his potential as an artist.

The other day, my friend Peabs said he was underwhelmed with something, to which I instantly replied, without even thinking, “You were underwhelmed if that’s a word. I know it’s not cuz I looked it up. It’s one of those skills that I learned in my school.” At that point, I knew that I had to post this oldie but oh so goodie from Canadian rockers Sloan. I had completely forgotten about this song and how fantastic/timeless/quasi-ridiculous it is, so I knew I had to share it with all of you (or more correctly, remind you all of how much you love it to, because you might have forgotten about it for so many years like I did). Plus I haven’t really posted too many super old songs lately, so I figured I was due anyway.

As you hopefully recall, last month, we put together our first ever mixtape entitled A Blogwave Summer which was curated by 20 of our favorite music blogs, each contributing a track of their own and mixed together by none other than myself. Well, I had so much fun putting that together that I decided to do it again with a bunch of tracks of my choosing. There wasn’t really a theme at the onset, it was just a lot of mostly high energy (and, for the most part, extremely bright) tracks that I love, most of which I hadn’t heard until I started this site last May. When I gave it a listen this past weekend on a 4-hour solo drive up to Traverse City, I decided it made pretty great driving music, especially on a sunny day, and thus, Summer Drive was born.

I could have also very well called this mix dailybeatz 101, because for someone who doesn’t visit the site regularly, it’s a fantastic representation of exactly the type of music that we love here. In fact, most of these songs have been posted on this site at one point or another, so you may have heard many of them here already, but I must say there’s something to be said for the way that juxtaposition can really change the feel of a song.

Special thanks to CrystalSister whose picture I used for the mixtape artwork.

Just like last time, you can right click/save as the zip file below which includes the mix split into individual tracks as well as front and back covers. Or, you can download the full mix from the soundcloud player below (this is what I recommend as you are sure not to encounter any split second gaps between tracks which really hurt the flow) and you can save the front and back artwork from this post. Either way, I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and please please PLEASE let me know what you think. I apologize for naming every mixtape “summer” something, but it’s what I love, and what the music sounds like for me. Check out the track list below.

Here’s a sample track from the mix that’s become one of my favorites the last few days. It’s the beautiful, flowing “We Ah Wi” by Javelin, which sounds like a breezy summer afternoon.

I had very mixed feelings about the MGMT and Tame Impala show last Wednesday at The Fillmore Detroit (aka the State Theater before The Fillmore became a chain of venues). On the one hand, I was pretty excited to see MGMT live at last since I’ve had 3 chances at festivals and none of them have worked out for various reasons I won’t go in to. And I have been absolutely reeling over this Tame Impala album the past couple of weeks, so I was more than stoked to see these guys in the height of my fasciation with them. On the other hand, I’d heard some not so good things about MGMT’s live shows, and I knew it was going to be tweenypalooza which I don’t usually love. But as I always try to do, I went into it with an open mind ready to form my own opinions.

After some crazy scheduling mishaps at the very last second and thanks to a Tigers game taking place across the street from the venue, we rushed downtown as early as we could to secure a parking spot and a place for Tame Impala. After learning that my friend Anne Marie can literally do just about anything she wants with no hesitation, Tame Impala took the stage. First impressions: Holy crap, they look like super young Australian hippies! I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised because I’ve listened to their music and have reveled in its psychedelic goodness, but I guess I just didn’t think they would look so young. But really, when it comes to fantastic music, age don’t mean a thing. The two guitars, bass and drums (just a classic setup for a rock band) sounded just as great as the album if not better. I was a little worried about all of the crazy pedal effects on the album not holding up live but the guys can work their pedals with the best of them.

What was maybe the most surprising part of Tame Impala’s performance? At times, they straight up became a jam band! There were at least two or three times when I suddenly would just feel as if I was in the 10th minute of an ambient Phish jam for a few moments before they would head back into the main theme. I feel really fortunate that I was able to see these guys live so early in a career that I think has enormous potential.

Up next was MGMT. They took the quasi black light laden stage and played a pretty good mix of tracks from both Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations. Lead singer Andrew VanWyngarden came out wearing some sort of blue animal hat much to the delight of the girls in the front row who were screaming like they were watching the Beatles in their first ever US appearance. I was worried one of the gals was going to pass out or something. The backdrop of the stage was a few giant shapes (including one reminiscent of the wave on the cover of Congratulations) that seemed to have images being projected at them from the inside leading to some pretty cool and crazy visuals.

So now back to my attempted lack of expectations. In the end, sure, MGMT wasn’t the greatest live band I’ve ever seen. And sure, I felt a little old among the sea of tweens (every single one of which had purchased a t-shirt that night. I can’t even fathom how much the band made on merch sales alone). But you know what else, I still had a lot of fun, because I let myself instead of talking myself out of it. And you know what else? The songs from Congratulations actually had me bopping my head most of the time, so I think I even like the album more than I thought I did. And I have to admit that it takes some major cajones for a band to play what is essentially a 12+ minute slow song in the middle of a set. I was a little worried that the balcony was going to collapse during “Kids”, but it was nice to see both MGMT and Tame Impala on stage basically goofing off the whole song, trading tambourines and maracas. Because music/shows should just be about having fun.

Slam dunk. That’s what this remix is. Millionyoung, whose name I always confuse with Memoryhouse, has remixed…uh…Memoryhouse. But it is the most natural of fits. I would say that both of these groups/acts are among those that I hear the most often but haven’t really given good listens to, but I think that’s about to change. Sometimes I hear a song and within the first 5 seconds I’m already thinking “me love you long time” and this is one of those tunes. If you’re into the chilled out electro with a good beat that we tend to gravitate towards so often, you are going to love this one. But most of you have probably already heard it. But if you haven’t, then you heard it here FIRST.

For some reason, when I first heard “Breakneck Speed” by Tokyo Police Club, I thought it was alright, but I didn’t love it. I thought it was missing that certain…je ne sais quoi…that I loved so much about them. I think that certain something was a more upbeat tempo. Luckily, the Jetlag remix (Jetlag being the duo of Ole Koretsky and Andy Rourke), first premiered by Sheena Beaston recently while she was doing her guest gig over at East Village Radio, takes care of that for me and generally makes the song more awesome if I do say so myself. I think I especially like the end of the track when it gets a little more chill. Did I just contradict myself? Probably, I’m pretty good at that. But at least I’m good at something, right?

You can hear the track below, but please make sure to check it out at either Sheena Beaston or East Village Radio because they are the originators of this audio goodness.

If you recall from my “We Can’t Fly” post from a few weeks back, I am a huge fan of just about every Aeroplane remix created since the dawn of man. But damn, this remix of Breakbot‘s “Baby I’m Yours” is pretty near the top of my list. If you wanted Aeroplane to bring it, just take a listen and you will quickly realize that it’s already been broughten. Sure, I posted a youtube version of this track last week. But let’s be honest, it’s really just too good not to be posted in a proper 6.5 minutes of heat mp3 format.

If you read this site with any regularity, you are probably already aware that Monsieur Adi is among my favorite producers on the scene right now. Every song he remixes just becomes larger than life, but with his generous but appropriate use of strings and synth, he keeps his remixes warm as well. And he makes sure to always highlight the quiet and subdued parts of the songs he remixes as well, which leads to a huge contrast and happy faces all around. Even though this remix was done late last summer, I never heard it until just now, and it might just be among my favorites that he’s done. The track is “Los Feeling” by UK outfitVisitor, a duo who collaborates via the interebs. They are getting set to release “Los Feeling” as their debut single on June 21. In addition to the fantastic Adi remix below, we’re also bringing you “Love”, a b-side on the single, for your listening pleasure.

Have I mentioned that Monsieur Adi is one of my favorite producers out there right now?
