Let’s slow it down a bit with the can’t-quite-put-my-finger-on-it sounds of Motel Motel. The Brooklyn based band recently released The Big Island and there you can find this track, “Helena, MT”. The constant guitar riffs, occasionally dissonant strings and rich piano over the steady bass drum accompany each other perfectly in this tune to give you something that seems to grow on you with each listen. I remember a friend telling me a crazy story about her driving across the country from Washington state and stopping at a little cafe in Helena, only to run into a good friend of hers from high school who happened to be driving across the country in the opposite direction. I can picture listening to this tune driving away from a chance meeting such as this. Warm and comforting to see a familiar face in the middle of nowhere, but at the same time unsettled, wondering how it was even possible.
