Girls – Carolina

This past weekend, I was spending a lame Saturday night at home (winter really tends to bring out my social side as I’m sure you can tell) perusing some musical selections and some youtube vids and I stumbled upon a song that I love so much but have never posted. And even though it’s a few months old and everyone and their brother has put it up already, I’m doing it anyway, cuz I do what I want. It’s from our favorite not really sure what to call them group from San Francisco, Girls, and is from the quasi-recently released/excellent/stellar Broken Dreams Club EP. Why is this song so fantastic (especially in the context of Girls as a band)? The reason is, it shows several sides of what makes this band so special all in one song. In their Album album from 2009 (one of our favorites that year which I am currently listening to because it’s been way way too long since I gave it a spin), there were some really upbeat jams with catchy melodies (see “Lust for Life”, “Laura”, etc) and then there were some darker, hazier jams (see “Morning Light” for example). But, you see my friends, Carolina combines the best of both worlds with a completely hazy quasi jammed out intro which eventually reveals itself into a really great second half which is classic Girls. It’s not a short track, clocking in at over 7 minutes, but I don’t feel any of the buildup is wasted time. I hadn’t heard this song until the EP came out this year, and it makes me wonder if I actually witnessed a live performance of this song without even knowing it. Here’s the video that inspired this post. Check out those shoes.

Incidentally, Midi Festival in the French Riviera looks pretty fucking awesome, based solely on the location of the stage in this video. And the fact that it’s in the French Riviera.
