This is perhaps one of the more intriguing albums that has arrived in my inbox recently. It’s from Indiana University junior Joseph Denney who goes by the name Spirit Spine. His album is entitled Glossolalia which, despite being pretty close to one, is actually not the name of a song by Sigur Ros (Although Glosoli is a pretty kick ass tune in its own right, if I do say so myself). The album itself (from the couple of tunes I made it through thus far) is lots of lo-fi rockin goodness made up of tunes that often start out all atmospheric but build up into these really great melodies that completely makes sense of the lead-ins that came before them. The album is a bit of a conceptual one, telling the tale of a preacher who is the sole survivor of a plane crash in the desert and his subsequent questioning of his beliefs as he tries to survive with nothing. You can listen to the whole album on the Spirit Spine Bandcamp page here and you can download “Ocean of Sand” for free. This tune is a great example of what I mentioned before. There are a good 2-3 minutes of a solid drumbeat laying the groundwork over all kinds of blended sounds and yelps and screams before dropping into a simple but great melody that carries the rest of the track quite nicely. There’s no way I could ever listen to all of the albums that arrive in my inbox, but this one will definitely get the full treatment.
