Upon first listen, this song gave me a great White Town “Your Woman” vibe, but with a stutter which, as this remix from White Arrows proves, is definitely not a bad thing. Even when you consider that a few times, you think the track’s gone dead. So imagine my surprise when I looked up who Johnny Belinda was and learned that it was a movie from 1948 in which a male doctor tried to mentor a young woman who was deaf and a mute who was the victim of a sexual attack and was impregnated, causing quite the scandal. This seems like a pretty heavy/taboo storyline for the year 1948, no? Oh wait, wasn’t that like the roaring 20s or something? If you dug this, you might want to check out Active Child‘s 2011 album You Are All I See

Jack Peñate‘s album Everything Is New was on some heavy rotation back in 2009 when it was released. I had just discovered him that year and by total chance I even got to see him live opening for Miike Snow at the Empty Bottle in Chicago after a galaxy’s worth of stars aligned, and his set was most enjoyable. But then I didn’t really hear anything from/about him since then, until his name appeared in my Twitter feed the other day in reference to this one-take track, recorded live in his home just a few weeks ago. It’s a pretty great example of his all around musical chops. You can download an mp3 of the song fo free over at jackpenate.com.

Saw this via a gorilla vs bear tweet and it totally surprised me. It started out with this long, slow and quiet guitar intro that had subtle Zeppelin references here and there and the suddenly it turned into this part-Steely Dan-esque poppy number with Sophia Knapp‘s smooth and soothing female vocals. If there is an entire album full of so many good sounds like this, it could be quite interesting. And after listening to a few samples on the Drag City website, I can say I’m uber excited for this album. Into The Waves will be released on Feb 28, the OG of last days in the month of Feb.

RxGibbs – Futures

It’s always nice when I can post an awesome tune and represent the great state of Michigan at the same time. Such is the case with “Futures”, a tune from the latest Cascine signee RxGibbs from the upcoming EP of the same name. This song makes me feel like I’m in the lushest whirlpool of sound and sunshine. I’m listening to the rest of the EP right now and it’s totally effing gorgeous. The EP, out on Feb 21, might be just the thing to get me from this not-really-that-bad-so-far winter.

Hey, good news, I can still see! So you’re not free from me just yet. In other news, Sweden wins again. Miike Snow is releasing the long awaited follow up to their 2009 debut album aka my favorite album of 2009 with Happy To You, out on March 20th. Of the couple of songs we’ve heard from the album, this somewhat brooding tune is my favorite so far, and it’s not just because of some guest vocals by one of the most babetastic babes out there, Ms. Lykke Li. It’s almost as if this song was written to be played live as you can just hear how easy it will be for them to slowly grow this tune until the crowd is unknowingly in the midst of an all out dance party. If you like Miike Snow in recorded form, you will adore them in live form.

I wasn’t planning on a post tonight, but tomorrow I will be getting my eyes fixed, so I figured I’d leave you one more tune to remember me by, just in case things go awry and I can never use the internet again (I can’t imagine a much more tragic outcome). Remember a few months ago-ish we posted a few rockin tunes from CSLSX? Well here’s what I consider to be one of the purtier tracks from the person/group that I think is from Philly. Even though I always think of the Marnie the necromancer from True Blood whenever I read the title. I hope you’ve all come to terms with the fact that I don’t even try to describe songs anymore and just trust that I am not leading you astray. I hope to see you again in a few days. Like, literally see you.

It’s Monday, I am the proud owner of a brand new temporary crown that doesn’t fit quite right on one of my molars, and I didn’t get another house that I tried to get. And with all that, these songs/videos from NZCA/LINES still makes me happy. Perhaps it’s because I love projected visuals and crisp, synthesized percussion. Look for the debut LP in February and check out “Okinawa Channels” and “Compass Point” below, because I love fractals.

I never heard the 2010 Lower Dens album Twin-Hand Movement but it sounds like several of my music-related friends thought it was a pretty good thing. Enter “Brains”, this new track that the group released a few weeks back, and I think I might have to go back and see what I missed. This growing, driving but still somewhat subtle track has most certainly piqued my interest. The new album Nootropics will be out May 1 of this year and I can’t wait. Because I will get to hear the album, and because it will be May 1, aka not the dead of winter.
