turin brakes – sea change

Today, I bring you another really awesome folk-inspired tune from a band I have never even heard of until about a half hour ago, Turin Breaks. I guess it can sort of be considered a precursor to what is coming tomorrow. The London duo of Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian makes me scratch my head when I try to define it, but it makes me happy when I just listen to it. Sorry, didn’t mean for that to be so cheesy. But I think you may agree when you listen. …read more and hear the song…

muse @ the palace of auburn hills 3.13.10

Last weekend was exhausting, but for all good reasons. After hitting up the RJD2 show at the Magic Stick on Friday night, we were headed to the exact opposite, the gigantic Muse arena specatacle at the Palace of Auburn Hills. I’m not a big fan of giant arena shows just because I like the intimacy of a lot of the smaller shows that I go to, but I’m such a fan of Muse, with their combination of metal, rock and classical melodies, that I knew I had to go, and as expected they did not disappoint. …read more and hear the song…

lusine – two dots

I know I say this all the time here, but I am continually impressed at the unique, out of the box and most importantly really captivating artists that are a part of Ann Arbor’s Ghostly International label. I truly think it’s one of the most progressive labels out there, and the fact that it’s so close to home makes it even more of a gem. I first heard this fantastic track by Lusine a few days ago in my friend Meg’s car on the way to a show and was not surprised when she told me that Lusine was a Ghostly artist. …read more and hear the song…

rjd2 @ the magic stick 3.12.10

This past Friday night marked the return of RJD2 to the Detroit area in what I think marked his first appearance since his DJ set at last Spring’s Movement Festival. And I think it’s because of that DJ set that I was so pleasantly surprised at his full live show. …read more and hear the song…

local natives – who knows who cares

Like so many of us, I’m so crazy in love with “Gorilla Manor”, the debut album of Los Angeles band Local Natives. It’s been in heavy rotation as of late which is saying quite a bit with the crazy amounts of great new music that have been released as of late. I will without a doubt be catching these kids when I hit up Coachella next month (holy crap, I’m finally going to Coachella next month), especially since they were supposed to be playing in the D based on flyers posted around local venues, but that Detroit tour date was nowhere to be found when the dates were officially announced last week. …read more and hear the song…

the dears – lost in the plot

This one’s been on the list for a long time now. And I think the main reason I haven’t talked about it is because I don’t even know what to say about it. Because I just like it that much. The Dears hail from Montreal, Canada, but before I looked that up, I would have bet money that they were from the UK. Perhaps it’s the voice of lead singer Murray Lightburn or just their overall sound. This tune is from their second album “No Cities Left” released in 2003. …read more and hear the song…

fever ray – seven (the twelves remix)

Wondering where your Saturday throwback is? Well, as part of our new format (at least one song per day), I’ve decided not to limit myself to certain types of songs on certain days. So now I can mix it up all the time.
As a big fan of both Fever Ray and Brazilian DJ duo The Twelves, I’m not really sure how I missed this remix last year when it blew up all over the blogosphere. It’s especially weird since I’ve actually posted the original of this song before. But letting bygones be bygones, the good news is that I’ve finally been exposed to this fantasmical remix. …read more and hear the song…

arms and sleepers – the architekt

Since this week is pretty much all high energy party funk disco dance remix goodness, how about a dark macabre tune to mix things up a little? This is another track sent to me from music recommendation extraordinaire Ulia direct from LA and I am so digging it. Arms and Sleepers is an ambient duo consisting of Mirza Ramic and Max Lewis, both from various parts of New England/the Northeast. They are currently touring the states and allegedly have a pretty sick visual show which I can only imagine would compliment music like this quick fantastically. …read more and hear the song…

fear of tigers – the adventures of pippi longstrump

Despite hailing from the UK, it almost seems as though Fear of Tigers, aka Benjamin Berry, should have hailed from France. After all, they seem to have perfectly encapsulated that French Touch sound that so many of us have grown to love. It’s OK to click on that link. I didn’t know what it was either until my friend Louis told me, but I think he’s spot on in his comparisons. …read more and hear the song…

top february tracks

hey y’all, first off let me thank our friend The Music Ninja for his help in cleaning up and organizing and coolifying our sidebar. My mind is much more at ease now that the chaos has subsided. Now, I thought it would be fun each month to just recap the top posts from the previous month. A “best of” of sorts, in case you haven’t been following along, so you can see what everyone else enjoyed so much the month before. I was able to determine this using a series of top-secret complicated algorithms that you probably wouldn’t understand anyway. You can listen to each track below or click to view the original post. Here’s the list! …read more and hear the song…
