November Top Tracks

Another month has gone by, which means that I have another excuse for some free content by reposting the songs that I’ve already posted before, but the ones that you all listened to the most, which means you probably liked them the most, which means you probably want to listen to them again. This month was dominated by our girl Robyn and her uncanny ability to make sweet tunes that also produce sweet remixes galore, which means I get to post another picture of her. The internet is starting to run out of pictures of Robyn that I haven’t posted before. We have a lot of exciting things in store for December and January (like perhaps a redux of a hugely popular project we completed in the past, for starters). So get super excited, listen to music, and high five everyone you see, all the time.

1. Robyn – Dancehall Queen (Diplo Remix)

2. Gorillaz ft. Daley – Doncamatic (All Played Out) [Joker Remix]

3. KiD CuDi – Scott Mescudi vs. The World (feat. Cee-lo)

4. The Knocks – Dancing With The DJ

5. Robyn – Indestructible (A-Trak Remix)

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I have a lot to be thankful for right now, as this seems to be one of those weeks where I find lots of awesome tracks without really trying. Believe it or not, the hardest part of this whole gig for me is actually finding the songs. I know, woe is me, I’m forced to listen to music for hours on end trying to find something that grabs my attention. But seriously, it’s really time consuming. So it’s very nice when the songs just seem to find you naturally. And such is the case with this one, another one of those that I knew I would be posting before I even hit the play button. Because that’s just what you get with Robyn and A-Trak.

And what’s even more exciting? I just randomly got an email from the Royal Oak Music Theatre telling me that Robyn is coming to town in February. I was in Seattle last weekend and she was doing an in-store mere hours after my flight back to Michigan began. The show is actually at the Crofoot but I hope it somehow gets moved to the ROMT (mostly for selfish picture taking purposes and sheer proximity to my place of residence). And then about a month later, Crystal Castles comes to town. So 2011 is already shaping up to be a pretty great concert season.

On to the song that started this extended rant of useless information. This song is just HUGE. I mean, the strings for pity’s sake. I also like how it’s decidedly both retro disco and electronic at the same time. But for real, the hugest part of it all for me is probably the weird synth solo at about the 2 minute mark on top of those intense strings. And the last 45 seconds or so ain’t too shabby either.

Aside from the unofficial start of summer and a much needed long weekend, Memorial Day weekend is always an exciting time in Detroit because it means that it’s time for Movement Festival (formerly known as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival or demf), one of the city’s biggest events of the year. 3 days of heavy beats and fun in the sun right on the Detroit riverfront. 5 stages going strong for 12 hours a day all weekend. What more could you ask for?

Saturday night, my main goal was to catch A-Trak so we arrived downtown about an hour before his set. After heading to the Red Bull stage, we caught the end of Excision’s set which was pretty rockin (even if it did feel a bit like Bassnectar) and then rocked out to A-Trak. I headed over to the Vitamin Water stage and caught a bit of Josh WInk before meeting up with the rest of the crew. We didn’t really know where to head next, but Julie said she heard good things about DJ Hype over on the Red Bull stage again (which ended up being our home away from home for the weekend). And that was a great decision. I didn’t know that I loved drum and bass, but it turns out that I do!

I wasn’t able to attend day 2 of the fest due to some prior engagements and the exhaustion caused by them, but check back for part 2 of our coverage with lots of photos from day 3. Instead of trying to describe anything else that went down, I thought it would be best to just show you. And there are LOTS more from the weekend on our flickr page. I tried to include some (potentially surprising) pictures of Detroit, since I’m sure so many of you think it’s all the gloom and doom you hear about on TV all the time.

Another hot track that I recently received via email, which is pretty refreshing because a lot of the stuff I’ve been getting recently is just not what I’m into at ALL. Not even a little. This one is by Adam Kesher which is actually a French band, and not a person. Does that remind anyone else of another dailybeatz favorite band who has a person’s name but is actually a band? This band gets some instant street cred because it was produced in party by Dave One from Chromeo, and everyone loves Chromeo. There are also some major nods from A-Trak and parts of Cassius, and that is never a bad thing.

“Hour of the Wolf” is the first single from the upcoming album Challenging Nature and is so high energy that it’s tough not to instantly like it for that reason alone. If the rest of the album is anything like this one, I’m definitely going to be on board with this group. You can download the single for free from the band’s website if you click here. Why is French music usually so great?

There are millions of songs that bring the heat, and there are millions of songs that bring the funk, but I don’t think there are quite as many that bring both at the same time. And when you listen to the appropriately titled “The Motion” by Duck Sauce, you might feel like I did, that you’ve just found one of those songs that delivers the 1-2 punch.

When I read the band name, while it sounded delicious, I didn’t really know who or what it was. But then when I found out that it’s an Armand Van Helden and A-Trak project, I was first ashamed that I hadn’t heard about this or remembered hearing about this, but then the fantastic track I was listening to made a lot more sense. Make sure you wait for the funky melody to come in before you say something like, “This guy is on crack. There’s no funk to be had and I’m already 30 seconds into the song. I don’t know why I come here anyway.” Just don’t do that, OK?

on this last day of 2009, i would like to officially declare 2009 the year of the remix. as i looked back through the 200+ posts in 2009 (we just started this operation in may), i noticed that nearly 10% of them were remixes, and uber-killer remixes at that. sure, not all of these were actually released in 2009, but they were loved by me in 2009. so just in case you missed them, heres a quick list of some of my favorite remixes of the year, plus another great one from this year that i havent posted yet (but youve no doubt heard it around the web already).

vampire weekend vs miike snow – the kids dont stand a chance

radiohead – everything in its right place (gigamesh remix)

metric – help im alive (the twelves remix)

the temper trap – sweet disposition (alan wilkis remix)

mgmt – electric feel (justice remix)

and making its world debut on dailybeatz (despite its actual world debut everywhere else months ago), the sick dance club remix of a song that was already a total dance song, courtesy of a-trak and yeah yeah yeahs.

yeah yeah yeahs – heads will roll (a-trak remix)

BONUS: and since 2009 was the year of the remix, how about a remix of 2009? as he has the past few years, dj earworm has created a mashup of the biggest pop songs of the year. regardless of your opinions on any of these songs as standalone tracks, you have to admit this remix of the billboard top 25 of the year is kind of cool. its like a cornucopia of the guilty pleasures of 2009, spliced up just enough that you can justify pretending that you cant pick out all the songs just to feel better about yourself. if not, you can check out the list of songs on his website.

chromeo probably at bonnaroo

if youve been waiting all week for a track to get you moving on this friday morning/afternoon/evening, look no further. montreal duo chromeo has come to the rescue. and as the duo is half jewish and half arab, these guys are the isreali/palestinian conflict come to a resolution, just like my friend jackie. and david macklovitch (guessing hes the jewish one) is the older brother of alain macklovitch, better known as a-trak. that mother must have been proud to birth not one, but two excellent musical acts. as a side note, based on the scenery, im pretty sure the above pic is from bonnaroo. makes me want to go to bonnaroo.

this new track “night by night” is pure 80s-infused magic that is sure to be infused into late night playlists all over the country, nay, the world (jon — im looking at you. get this shit on the playlist now!). if this doesnt get you moving a little in your seat as youre reading this then, well, i guess theres really no hope for you. good luck in the rest of your life as a boring person who refuses to have fun.
