le loup – grow

This one is super fresh folky goodness. I don’t know how else to describe it. It’s by Le Loup, a many-piece out of Washington DC. Which you may know as “the city that the Real World is on right now”. I’m glad I saw this tune recently because I’ve actually seen Le Loup perform live maybe a year and a half ago opening up for Stereolab, and I wanted to check them out but completely forgot about them. I remember them having some really cool sounds and being really over the top, but you can tell that those kids love what they’re doing, and that’s what it’s all about.

“Grow” is folky and has some definite eastern influences and it’s like a weird and great mashup of so many of the bands that I love. It’s a little bit Fleet Foxes, a little bit Animal Collective, a little big Grizzly Bear, a little bit Yeasayer, and all with some nice eastern influence. It’s so nice when you see an opening act that you may have never heard of, and then you like them, and then you forget about them, and then you remember about them again, and you still like their stuff.

last years “merriweather post pavilion” by animal collective was clearly one of the blogospheres favorite albums of the year, virtually guaranteed to be seen on almost every top 10 list of 2009. and of those great tracks, “bluish” was always among my favorites. i think i liked the laidback chillness of that song compared to a lot of the others on the album. but even as accessible as this animal collective album was (compared to albums of anco past), there were still some people who were kind of afraid of it and missed out on its beauty because of that. entre sondre lerche.

the norwegian singer songwriter recently released an acoustic guitar version of the track, and it definitely accentuates the fact that the fellas of animal collective can really write a great tune when it comes down to it. i feel like some people think of them as hiding behind their electronics and effects, but even a completely stripped down version like this is a great listen. dare i say that i like this version just as much as the original?

sondre lerche – bluish

and since we love the fans so very much, a bonus track for you today. and its another case of one of our current favorite artists doing an excellent acoustic cover of an electronic tune from another of our favorites: grizzly bears cover of hot chips “boy from school”. a great twist on one of my favorite hot chip tunes.

the time has come. i know the anticipation has been unbearable, and i apologize for that. i was originally going to post this on monday but i was so excited i just couldnt wait. my basic criteria for my top albums are based on how much i listened to that album on repeat after i heard it for the first time. because isnt that really the best sign of how much you like an album? i was going to do a best songs of 2009 list too, but i post my favorite songs every day. i felt guilty narrowing down to 10 (and frankly couldnt pick) so ive bumped it up to the top 20, along with a track from each album (which may or may not have been posted here before).

20. the handsome furs – face control

handsome furs - face controli dont reckon this album made many year end lists, but the completely raw sound (both musically and vocally)just stuck with me and kept bringing me back for more.  and after seeing this two piece live this summer, i know that i want to listen to their music and to party with them. just a fun album.

handsome furs – all we want baby is everything

19. jack penate – everything is new

everything is newto be perfectly honest, this album really didnt do much for me at first. then i was lucky enough to catch mr. penate live on a whim while i was in chicago earlier this year and i got to witness how fun and exciting his music can be first hand. then i found out my friend amber waited on him earlier that day, and i realized it was meant to be and the album went into heavy rotation shortly after.

jack penate – tonights today

18. bat for lashes – two suns

bat for lashes - two sunsthe ever lovely natasha khans second album has really shown her moving forward since the release of the great “fur and gold” a few years back. this time, the songs are bigger and harder hitting. and its no surprise since she spent a bit of time in new york with dailybeatz favorite yeasayer working on beats. and for the second time, she even nabbed a mercury prize nod. we hope to see lots more of her in the future.

bat for lashes – daniel

17. here we go magic – here we go magic

here we go magichere we go magic is actually the third musical outing by luke temple, who previously released music under his actual name. i feel as though this album is best listened to on a lazy hazy summer afternoon. the intentional low production quality (allegedly recorded on a 4 track) actually adds to the album in this case. its almost as if we are listening in on some sort of practice session. a practice session which can get pretty ambient at times but more often than not is pretty neat.

here we go magic – ahab

buy this album on Here We Go Magic - Here We Go Magic or amazon

16. dirty projectors – bitte orca

bitte orcaits almost become uncool or cliche to like this album after how much buzz it got when its released, but since i am uncool, i am not afraid to add it to my top 1720(this originally somehow ended up as the top 17 list, but the OCD in me was uncomfortable with that number so i bumped it up to 20) of 2009 list. theres just something about the way that voices are used as instruments here that i love. and great voices they are.

dirty projectors – useful chamber

buy this album on Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca or amazon

15. faunts – feel.love.thinking.of.

faunts - feel.love.thinking.ofspecial thanks to mr peabs for informing me of this one month ago. i think the best way to describe this album is to steal from amazon reviewer mark roberts who says, “like m83s ‘saturdays=youth’, its a gorgeous and non-ironic homage to 80s music, without seeming any way dated.” i couldnt have said it better myself mark. hopefully this albums release date early in the year wont have thrown it off the radar of too many year end lists.

faunts – it hurts me all the time

buy this album on Faunts - Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. or amazon

14. the xx – xx

the xx - xxah yes, everyones favorite early twenties london minimalist rock band, the xx. i was really late in listening to this album (as i am with most everything) but from even the first track i knew i was going to like this one. its amazing how much emotion can be put forth with such little sound at all. and the voices of oliver sim and romy madley croft just work perfectly together.  not to mention the fact that they put out one of the biggest remixes of the year.

the xx – islands

buy this album on The XX - XX (Bonus Track Version) or amazon

13. dark was the night

dark was the nightyeah, thats right, a compilation has made its way into my best albums of the year list. why? mostly because it was basically a whos who of the indie world at that point in the year and there were tons of great tracks that came from that album. and its for a good cause taboot! and is there even any doubt as to which track youre going to hear from it?

yeasayer – tightrope

buy this album on Ben Gibbard & Feist - Dark Was the Night or amazon

12. yeah yeah yeahs – its blitz

yeah yeah yeahs - its blitzkaren o and crew did it again, this time the tunes were bigger, brighter, and just made you want to dance. the album came out just as the warm weather was starting to take shape, and it became an essential summer album. with a big festival repertoire this year, including an impressive last minute lollapalooza headlining gig, the band solidified their place among todays great rock acts.

yeah yeah yeahs – zero

buy this album on Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! or amazon

11. royksopp – junior

royksopp - juniorafter just one listen to this album i knew it was right up my alley, especially since my tastes have turned so much to anything that can be danced too. even the title of the opening track, “happy up here”, was a great indication of what youd be getting from this one, fun energy. a great pump-you-up record with one of my top 5 songs of the year.

royksopp – the girl and the robot

buy this album on Röyksopp - Junior or amazon

10. memory tapes – seek magic

memory tapes - seek magicthis was one of the latest additions to my music collection, and i reckon that if i had a little more time to spend with it, it may have inched up even higher. the dreamy sounds laid over a nice beat just take you to another place. i think this is one of those albums where the album art perfectly fits the music. cant wait to see what weird and or memory tapes and or cassette bring us next.

memory tapes – stop talking

9. animal collective – merriweather post pavilion

animal collective - merriweather post pavilionyeah, you knew it was coming eventually. my love affair began when i finally got a studio version of “my girls”, the track i fell in love with when i heard it live almost a year earlier. and the rest of the album kept me coming back for more. im really not going to repeat everything anyones said about this album because we would be here all day, but this is a must have for any music fan. bonus points for most psychedelic album art. just find a large version of the album cover and get back to me.

animal collective – bluish

8. fever ray – fever ray

fever ray - fever raythe first time i listened to this album it was early on a sunday morning driving through the (at the time) desolate streets of detroit. this scenario was so fitting with the album that karin dreijer andersson eventually turned it (well, something like it) into a music video. my surroundings during my first listen really shaped my vision of this album in an extremely positive way. however intrigued i was by andersson before this project, i am now intrigued tenfold by her mysterious persona.

fever ray – when i grow up

7. girls – album

girls - albumthis album definitely snuck up on me, with its loud guitars and catchy melodies. i think what i like most about it is that the whole album just sounds so much like california. not any specific destination or aspect of california, just california as a whole. perhaps because of christopher owens’ gritty and playful vocals, the album just feels real and genuine. its also one of those albums where my favorite song changes weekly. right now, its “morning light”.

girls – morning light

6. phoenix – wolfgang amadeus phoenix

phoenix - wolfgang amadeus phoenixso much to say about this latest offering from phoenix. i still remember my first time hearing “1901″ and how i knew instantly it would become a go-to song when i needed some energy, and then i realized that a lot of the album was the same way. and a seven and a half minute track that was almost all instrumental? sign me up. and just recently i was able to witness first hand that their live performances contain all of the energy of the album (and then some).

phoenix – love like a sunset

buy this album on Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix or amazon

5. grizzly bear – veckatimest

grizzly bear - veckatimesti still have no idea what “veckatimest” is supposed to mean, but i do know that it lived up and surpassed any hype and expectation. a solid offering from the very first notes of “southern point” to the wistful ending of “foreground” and jam packed with classics in between. this is one of those albums that just about any music fan young or old will probably enjoy.

grizzly bear – while you wait for the others

buy this album on Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest or amazon

4. st vincent – actor

st vincent - actorfor annie clarks sophomore album, she broke every musical rule. whatever role you thought an instrument would play, it played the opposite on this one (listen to the flute throughout this song below, for example). and i think thats whats so special about this album. it doesnt really sound like anything youve ever heard before, and its almost uncomfortable to listen to at first, but once you get a grasp on whats going on, you can really apprecaite how one of a kind it is.

st vincent – save me from what i want

3. edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros – up from below

edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros - edward sharpe and the magnetic zerosok, so i dont know if this album was technically released this year, or why it seems to have multiple names, but it definitely found its biggest audience this year either way. the album cover describes the album perfectly. old fashioned and awesome. this folky number (allegedly all recorded live on a 24 track machine) is perfect for that friend who just cant get in to any of your music because it was made on a computer and therefore unpure. full of beautiful melodies with stripped down production, its the simplicity of this album that draws you in, and its the catchy songs that will keep you singing. it conjures visions of flower children holding hands singing songs, in a totally non-dirty hippie way.

edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros – come in please

buy this album on Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Up from Below (Bonus Track Version) or amazon

2. the antlers – hospice

the antlers - hospiceone of the most emotional albums, musically and lyrically, in recent memory. the tale of troubled lovers dealing with a terminal illness is told in great detail on this album, complete with the good times, the bad times and everything in between. but much of the time (save for maybe “kettering”), the music doesnt want to make you cry, in fact, it does quite the opposite. in “bear”, for example, the music is like that of a childrens lullaby but builds into something much bigger. and if you think that their live show would be boring and quiet, you would be in for a shock when they nearly blow the speakers out.

the antlers – bear

buy this album on The Antlers - Hospice or amazon

1. miike snow – miike snow

miike snow - miike snowif you read this blog with any regularity, then you probably already knew this was the number one album. miike snow was really my overall musical act of the year, with the great album, two great live performances that i witnessed, and two of the ILLEST remixes of the year. in my opinion, this is the perfect album for people who hear the word “electronic” and run away screaming, because its totally electronic in a completely digestible way. the album starts out with the total pop hit “animal”, then “burial” gives our first tastes of computers, but its subtle and welcome. by “silvia”, youve moved on from dipping a toe in the water to pretty much end up waste deep in electronic goodness, and by then, the water feels fine so youre ready to dive in head first. luckily there are tracks later like “plastic jungle” and “in search of main” to whet your appetite. and the album pales in comparison to their live performances, with their 5-10 minute dj improvs following nearly every song.

picture of perrys, stolen from ursula

unfortunately, i dont really have many pictures and/or memories from day 2, just because it was so stinkin hot and miserable. but lets go ahead and see what we can remember, but be prepared for a slightly less robust recap than yesterday. i think the saddest part of my pictures from the weekend is that i forgot to take pictures of me and my friends for the most part.

i arrived at the festival at around 1 45 pm, which is the earliest ive ever gotten there, making for an extra long day. i headed straight to the vitaminwater stage to meet up with karen and to check out miike snow. as the lead singer told us all, “miike snow is a band, not a person. and we’re keeping two i’s in our name, because its too late to change it”. id only heard a miike snow remix that i posted here a while back and am obsessed with and was curious to see what their own stuff was like. needless to say, i was EXTREMELY impressed. excellent melodies mixed with rockin beats in an electronic wonderland. it was so fun that we almost didnt notice it was 90 degrees with high humidity and became what i think may have been my favorite show of the weekend.

ive listened to their self-titled album probably 15 times in the last few days (literally listened to it on repeat the entire day at work yesterday) and am loving it, and know it will be growing on me even more in the coming days. i remembered hearing a mishmash of electronicness when i was walking up to the stage and after hearing the album i THINK what i was hearing was the track below, starting at the 3:20 mark. great album, great band, great performers.

miike snow – in search of main

after that, we ran into caitlin and alex, and alex inquired about writing some sort of column for dailybeatz similar to peter griffins “what really grinds my gears”. im still waiting to hear back from her on that, but the offer has been extended. then we went to the eyeball tower aka the flag tower aka the best and easiest meeting place on the grounds to meet up with ursula and crew. after exchanging a sweaty hug, i met allison, her brother james and his friends and we all headed to perrys to see the animal collective dj set, and on the way i ran into peabs for the first time (of many). despite how hot it was, we were excited to dance, but sadly the animal collective dj set was so mellow we didnt even know that it began and was not very condusive to dancing, so we all decided to go back to the other side of the park to catch some of gomez.

however, 10 minutes in, the sun was beginning to get the best of us. we decided shade was in order and split up. on my way out, i ran into amy, who i run into everywhere. then i luckily ran into karen and louis again after a bathroom stop and we decided it was time for a nap in the shade. we went to the nice shaded area of the bmi stage and took a nap under the trees while listening to blind pilot, who reminded me of a more bluegrassy fleet foxes, but i was sleeping so i guess i dont really remember. i just know it was great resting music.

we met back up with ursula, james and crew at perrys and were going to see hercules and love affair, but when we realized it was a dj set, we decided to see santigold instead. as we we waited for 20 minutes or so for the set to start, the effects of the heat were apparent. the six of us couldnt even muster up the energy to have any sort of conversation, and we all acknowledged that we were completely ok with that. santigolds set began and we all got a little more pep in our step, but about a half hour in i had to leave the crowd to use the restroom.

this is where i encountered the most persistent clusterfuck of the festival, and when i returned there was no way i was getting back in the crowd (although i did run into amy again twice in the next half hour, which was weird). i decided to get some potstickers (chicken and vegetable dumplings) from star of siam and they were phenomenal. tv on the radio was up next and i spent half the set trying to find anyone, and by the time i did we were so far back that it wasnt even enjoyable. i dont know why i am cursed never to enjoy a tv on the radio show, but im sure i will one of these days.

after that, karen louis and i headed to catch diplo at perrys and it was a blast. the sun was finally starting to disappear and we knew that the worst was over (for that day at least) and danced away until it was time to head back to the budweiser stage for the newly announced headliners, yeah yeah yeahs. and i think this is when i ran into shaf and agatha.

bad shot of diplo at lollapalooza
diplo lollapalooza crowd
crazy fun for diplo at lollapalooza

im a big fan of yeah yeah yeahs, but i guess i didnt expect much out of their live show for whatever reason, so i was pleasantly surprised when it was rockin with heavy beats that i wasnt expecting. karen o, in her ever infinite wardrobe of weirdness, came out wearing a full headdress and covered in feathers. below is an awful picture of the feathery mass that was karen o. for some reason, their set was almost impossible to get a clear picture of, at least from where we were standing.

yeah yeah yeahs at lollapalooza

she stripped that off after a few songs and was left wearing some sort of flower covered material that looked to be wrapped like a diaper. the show was completely above anything i expected and worthy of a headlining spot, but after a little while we decided we all wanted to see what bassnectar was all about back at perrys.

yeah yeah yeahs – heads will roll

bassnectar was exceptional. the sun had finally set, and the awesome visuals of perrys were now in full effect. like i said before, the perrys area this year was pretty much out of control all the time and usually had something great going on and this was a great way to end the night.

bassnectar at lollapalooza

with 20 minutes or so left before the shows ended, we decided we should check out tool, just to say we did it. we marched across to the other side of the park again, and once we arrived, we all decided that we didnt want to be there at all, so we left. we stopped on the way out for some food and got the most perfectly cooked french fries we have ever had. crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. we ate them as we walked back to the red line, which we were able to get on immediately despite it already being full of white sox fans, and headed home. i was able to convince the guys to go to wicker park with me to meet up with allison and ursula and we hit up a few bars and had a great, late night. the effects of the weekend were quickly catching up with me and i crashed, knowing that i had to wake up at some point to let nick and mark into the apartment, and knowing that i had to be at the festival by 1230, impossibly early for a festival for me, to see friendly fires the following day, and boy am i glad that i did.

atlas sound live

did everyone recover from their first sunday without a song this week? i hope so, because thats the way things are gonna be around here from now on, so get used to it. todays song is maybe the timeliest of any song ive posted so far because it broke throughout the blogosphere just last week. but since its now a week later, everyones pretty much heard it anyway. the song is the newest offering from atlas sound, the solo project of perpetually skinny bradford cox, probably best known for his band deerhunter. he collaborates with noah lennox, aka panda bear, whos also a member of animal collective. i actually saw both of these guys at 2008 pitchfork fest (it always comes back to pfork fest, doesnt it?). panda bear was of course playing with saturday headliners animal collective, and bradford cox was part of the “make some shit up to play to keep the crowd pacified until cut copy makes an appearance since they are running really late” crew . it was a very…interesting..performance, but i gave him the benefit of the doubt because he was put in the precarious situation of improvising entertainment in light of an unavoidable delay. and i like deerhunter.

why do i like this song? probably because it sounds like exactly what you think a collaboration between atlas sound and panda bear would sound like. youve got all the poppy blips and beeps of atlas sound, and youve got all the reverb of panda bear. the first time i heard this track it didnt really do much for me, but after giving it a few more listens im pretty happy with it. happy enough that it makes the cut into playlist of songs on my ipod that i really like. without further ado, i present to you “walkabout”, which is only about a week behind the times in terms of the blogosphere, so thats not too bad when you think about it.

the changes live

today we have a special treat. the first in what could potentially become a series of interviews with dailybeatz artists. our special guest today is darren spitzer, lead singer of Chicago band the changes. their sound is pretty unique and combines elements of pop, rock and jazz, to quote wikipedia, all with a “dreamy jangle”. i hadnt heard from them in the while so i wanted to check in to see what they were up to. this is my first interview ever, so the questions are kind of stupid. hopefully in time they will become more awesomer.

dailybeatz: tell us what it was like to play lollapalooza after winning a battle of the bands contest and being the only unsigned band on the bill?

darren spitzer: playing lollapalooza was a great experience, but beyond everything the weather is what everyone remembers about it. it was 104 degrees, sweltering and surreal. we didn’t win a battle of the bands. we just got the gig because we were a higher-profile local group. (editors note — i swear i researched the band but got some bum information)

db: settle the score. whats the best pizza in chicago?

ds: ginos east has that corn flavored crust…probably the best. but i love the pizza they serve at chicago sporting events…connies.

db: what are a few up and coming artists youve been listening to?

ds: im only listening to old stuff, theres such a crazy volume of new bands that im way out of touch with. theres an animal collective song i think is incredible…thats about it.

db: are you guys attending pitchfork or lollapalooza this year and if so who are you most excited to see? (editors note – oops, guess i was supposed to post this last week)

ds: i used to sell water at pitchfork, but that got kinda old so im skippin that. lolla could be fun, my friend is gonna play steel pedal over there.

db: what are your favorite chicago nighttime hot spots, and favorite drunk food on the way home?

ds: favorite nighttime hot spot is maries. great jukebox filled with the old stuff, its like another world in there…but you should only be there after 3am.

db: whats the craziest thing thats ever happened while you were on stage at a show?

ds: jonny [basofin] threw a drum stick at my hand, i must have done something mean or nasty…and he whipped this drumstick at my hand and it really hurt. it left a mark and also a bump for a few months. with time the aching and swelling went down. but man, guy threw a drumstick at me. that was crazy.

db: who would win in a fight between the changes and serena williams?

ds: the winner would be serenas ASS.

db: last but certainly not least, whats up next for the changes? are you working on new material or do you have any plans to tour in the future? do you want me to debut some brand new material on my blog?

ds: hmm…up next is another adventure, time will contiune to unfold…and unravel. id like you to post the awesome nigerian afro-disco song thats playing as i complete this interview.

special thanks to darren for taking the time to answer a few questions for us. as for the changes, hopefully there is nothing to read into his ominous response to my last question and there will be much more music coming from the group in the future. aside from posting the aforementioned nigerian afro-disco song at darrens request, i will also be playing my favorite track from the changes album “today is tonight”, the jazzy-chorded “her, you and i”.

animal collective live at 2008 pitchfork festival

another day, another writeup about a band we saw at last years pitchfork fest in beautiful chicago, illinois. this time were going to be talking about none other than saturday night headliners animal collective (click link if you are interested in a crazy video for “summertime clothes”). the other reason is because they were my official first request ever (big ups to radtke for submitting the first request). they showed up the end of our first day there – a day that began with rain and ended with mud and unrelenting humidity. like ridiculous humidity. but we fought through it, because these weather mishaps are much more palpable when you are in the middle of a music festival, and made it to the last act of the night. i had only heard maybe one animal collective song before this show so i was excited to see what they were all about, and i was all about what they were all about.

the song i chose is “my girls” from their new album “merriweather post pavilion”. now, the reason i chose this song has less to do with how it ranks on their album among favorite songs, and more to do with the memory surrounding it. normally when i see a band live that i dont know anything about, i remember the experience as a whole, but not individual songs, and even if i remember an individual song, i dont remember what it sounded like an hour later. but i heard this song, which was unreleased at the time, and remembered how much i liked it. then i found some other videos of the song live on youtube, then i waited almost a year until the album came out and i finally had a nice clean studio version. but sadly what i remembered most was almost completely lost in the studio version. the little background noise that plays in groups of two during the “i dont care for fancy things” part was extremely prominent in the live show (dont question me, i remember this well) and made such a huge impact on the overall feel of the song. despite that, the song and album have been a welcome addition to my music collection.
