For the second Saturday afternoon in a row, I finally decide to give a listen to a much hyped brand new track that seems to have the internet abuzz with excitement. Last week, it was Cee-Lo Green, and this week, begrudginly, it’s Kanye West. Well, Kanye West plus a few million other cool people. But for me, the most interesting part about this star-studded track is that, surrounded and unintimidated by the hip-hop powerhouses all around her (not to mention indie powerhouse Bon Iver who, honestly, I wouldn’t have recognized in this track were it not for the song title), Nicki Minaj takes the reigns and is the real star of this track. It’s no surprise they give her the (technically?) final verse, which she handles like the best of them. It’s no surprise in the graphic above that her name is bigger than all the rest. Not gonna lie, I never really listened to anything Nicki Minaj, maybe because I always assumed she was a cheesy pop star with a little bit of edge, but one that I still wouldn’t be a fan of. But now, it’s clear to me that she’s anything but. She’s a mothafuckin monster.

While so many of us have been awaiting a follow up to Bon Iver’s classic debut “For Emma Forever Ago”, we’ve definitely learned that Justin Vernon is a lot more versatile than we once may have thought. After his unforgettable folk-ish debut, we saw his more experimental side when he teamed up as a part of the Volcano Choir album “Unmap” (which I just so happen to rather enjoy) in the latter half of last year. And now, he’s teamed up again, this time as part of Gayngs, the collective featuring Vernon, Ryan Olsen, and members of Solid Gold, among so many others.

And from the one track we’ve heard thus far, this album is going to take us back to the 80s. But not in an Erasure dance-y sort of way. No, we’re talking sleazy, smoky 80s music that seems perfect for a late night rendezvous at an dark alley location made for sweet lovin’. And as the various promo videos suggest, we might not be too far off in that assessment. Either way, I’m sort of liking this first track, “The Gaudy Side of Town”, and am looking forward to seeing if the rest of the album follows suit. The album is released May 11, but you can preorder beginning on April 20 (perhaps better known as 4/20) and can download the album starting on that date if you preorder. What kind of project do you think Justin Vernon will get involved with next?

kids at the bar

its friday. i have to apologize, because while i fully stand behind every song i put up here, i sort of set a precedent for beat-tastic music on fridays, and while the past few fridays have featured great songs, they havent always been beat-tastic. so im going back to the way things used to be in a big way today. ellie goulding is a british artist that is currently recording her first album but is already making big waves with her first single, you guessed it, “under the sheets”. while her stuff so far is mostly of the upbeat ilkage ripe for remixing, shes got a softer side too, as evidenced by the lovely cover of bon ivers “wolves” that can be found on her myspace (even if she did remove the big climax at the end of the song).

i apologize for anyone listening to this early in the morning at work, as it may not be appropriate for the time of day. because it kind of makes me want to, to quote a friend, fist pump my face off. and we have oklahoma citys kids at the bar to thank for the fist pump inspiration. it totally reminds me of the many hours spent this august in the perrys area at lollapalooza. be sure to check out their myspace page for some more remixes, including one of empire of the suns walking on a dream, the very first track ever to be featured here on dailybeatz many moons (6 months) ago.

thom yorke

well kids, its happened. the twilight phenomenon has officially taken over the indie music world. as im sure many of you know by now, the next movie in the twilight series, new moon, is being released later this year and along with the release of the movie is the release of the soundtrack which is strangely full of many of our favorite artists like grizzly bear, muse, sea wolf, editors, lykke li, bon iver, and yes, even thom yorke. while im pretty tired of how twilight has taken over the world, i think the fact that we get some new tracks from all of these great artists is enough even to make perpetually bitchy looking twilight star kristin stewart smile.

the song sounds like classic thom yorke. pretty dark and pretty electronic. fortunately, i like this song way more than the last new thom yorke song i heard, the hollow earth. i have a feeling that most of the soundtrack is going to have this really dark feel about it, and i guess it will expose the teenybopper twilight fanatics to some of the excellent music thats out there, which i guess is a good thing, assuming that any shows of these acts are 18+. this intolerance of youngers is perhaps rooted in my seeing “where the wild things are” this past friday with tons of little children in the theater, and from my passion pit experience at lollapalooza. sorry kids.

megafaun

i first heard this track by megafaun last week and it immediately made the list of upcoming dailybeatz tracks. but then i read a little about the band and was extremely surprised at what i found out, but it makes a lot of sense when you hear the band. as it turns out, the band is made up of brad and phil cook from durham, nc and joe westerlund from eau claire, wi. but before they were megafaun, they were deyarmond edison, and they had one additional member who was, you guessed it, justin vernon aka bon iver. so while i thought his debut “for emma forever ago” was really his first foray, we’ve now discovered that prior to that release, he was involved in projects with both megafaun AND volcano choir. i wonder what else this guys got up his sleeve.

the track is entitled “the fade” off their second album “gather, form and fly” and it is banjo-laden folk goodness any way you slice it. theres a sort of reverb on the never still banjo that just makes this song feel so full when its layered over the harmonies that are laid over most of the lyrics. and if that wasnt enough folk for you, the slide guitar solo (or is it still a banjo?) near the end of the track will probably do it. theyve still got a few tour dates this fall in the states with bon iver and then with the dodos and then theyll be heading overseas for a bit, so catch them if you can.

volcano choir

even if you havent heard of volcano choir, youll definitely recognize the vocalist as soon as you hear the song. thats because its none other than everyones favorite lovelorn singer songwriter justin vernon, better known as bon iver. in this very interesting side project, he collaborates with collections of colonies of bees in releasing the album “unmap”. i dont really know anything about them, but apparently they are also from wisconsin. and im listening to some of their stuff as i type this, so now i know more about them. and they sound like a pretty cool instrumental and experimental posse. and they sort of remind me a lot of a grittier version of do make say think, and thats a good thing.

while “island, is” is a pretty straight forward song with really neat music and those trademark vernon vocals, do not expect the rest of the album to follow suit. as vernon says of the album to pitchfork, “i sing on the album, but there arent a lot of lyrics — its definitely on the experimental side of things”. and he aint just whistlin’ dixie. on the track “and gather”, vernon sings nonsensical noises throughout the song, all layered over what sounds like it could be the soundtrack for a baby einstein video, but for some reason, it just seems to work. i wanted to make sure i listened to this album a few times and really got a good sense of it before i posted, and i can say that im really liking it in all its glorious weirdness, even though a few of the tracks are too much even for me. while this track is pretty mainstream sounding and great (any song whose final lyrics are “and your old tits on your hard drive” is bound to be good), dont approach this album expecting “for emma, forever ago pt II” or you will be sorely disappointed.

lollapalooza

after a phenomenal and relaxing 9 day vacation (which was really two vacations in one), im finally back to civilization and internet, so i figured id get some memories of what actually went down at lollapalooza down on paper before i forgot them all, so for the next three days ill be bringing you an in depth day by day recap of things i did and saw, complete with lots of pictures (all taken by me throughout the weekend, and mostly not very good/clear pictures) and music from the acts i saw each day. so really this is kind of like a super mega bonus week with a few songs each day throughout the recap rather than just the 1.

day 1 of lollapalooza was, in one word, wet. myself, nick, sater, mark and melissa arrived at the ticket window at about 3 o clock, just in time for nick to get one of the last single day passes just before they sold out. it probably began raining at 12 that day and it didnt let up at all until about 7. i was lucky enough to have a rain jacket all day even though i didnt bring one because nick brought one but he likes being in the rain, so i was sort of dry all day. we walked in and went straight to the beer tent, the only way we were going to make it through that day. as we were already freezing, we gladly paid the $2 for the lollapalooza couzy since beer was served in giant cans this year instead of drafts.

our first stop was bon iver where we met up with karen and louis and ran into jill. ive seen him a few times before, all at festivals, and this show was just as great as all the others. the rain went along perfectly with his tunes and it was a nice mellow start to the weekend.

bon iver – brackett, wi

just before his set ended, i broke off from the group and started to make the long trek across the grounds to check out sts9. on my way i got my first glimpse of the awesomely expanded perrys area that was packed with awesome djs all weekend long and where we would be spending much time. it didnt really look like much early in the day in the rain but it really came alive at night. below is also a shot of buckingham fountain, reinforcing the gloom of the day.

first glimpse of perrys
gloomy buckingham fountain - lollapalooza day 1

i crossed the field and waited patiently for sts9 to start, and their show was pretty much exactly what i expected, in a good way. lots of cool lights (which normally would not have shown up well if not for the gloomy day) and lots of great and interesting instrumental tunes. definitely got you moving. i can only imagine seeing them at the house of blues late at night and how much more incredible the experience could have been.

sts9 live in the rain

since i was on my own, i decided it would be a good chance to try to get up close for my next set, so i left sts9 about 20 minutes early and headed over to the vitaminwater stage to catch crystal castles. luckily the stages were adjacent and they were broadcasting the sts9 show on the screens surrounding the vitaminwater stage, so i was still able to see and hear the rest of the show. i ended up in the 2nd or 3rd row of people just at the right of the stage in front of the large lollapalooza banner. i met a guy behind me whos been renovating the house of adam jones from tool, and he was telling me that he saw and met crystal castles the prior week at all points west and couldnt say enough good things about their show.

crystal castles – black panther

then the show began. madness. jumping. shoving. [aside: i never did understand why standing in crowds it was necessary to get 20 people to push the entire crowd over.] but in the middle of all that, the 8-bit electronic tunes i loved and close ups with lead singer alice. shes a very interesting figure, but definitely a great entertainer. she reminds me of someone i know, but i cant put my finger on who it might be. i had tons more pictures, but its tough to take a clear shot when in that constantly moving crowd.

after jumping around for most of the set and spilling most of my giant beer on everyone around me (luckily everyone was soaked anyway so it didnt matter), i decided to head across the park to meet up with my friends again. on the way i ran into natalie, perhaps the only other chaldean there. we oft talk about our similar music tastes but have never seen each other out and about at one of these things so it was great to see her. i made it to the other side of the park just in time to catch fleet foxes performing “mykonos”, one of my favorite songs of theirs, and ran into nick and melissa waiting for the bathrooms. meeting up at festivals is so much easier when you just run into people without trying.

fleet foxes – mykonos

next up was the decemberists. while i appreciated them playing their entire latest album, i was kind of hoping to hear some other tunes as well, but i was prepared for it since nick told me they did the same thing at bonnaroo (although i think they did play some other tracks at bonnaroo after getting through the album). i think the highlight of their set for me was “the wanting comes in waves”. i love the whole track, but i especially love the “queen of hearts” section, played by shara worden, aka my brightest diamond. she has perhaps one of the most powerful and unique voices out there, and i was especially happy when i saw her come on stage to sing her parts of the song, and she sounds just as incredible live.

i caught a bit of andrew bird (who ive also seen a few times already), grabbed some food, and then crossed the park for the final time for the moment i had been waiting for — depeche mode. they started about 20 minutes late and ended about 10 minutes early, shaving 25% off their scheduled 2 hour set, but they did not disappoint. the visuals, while not always very animated, were always usually pretty creepy, which goes just perfectly with their music. quick rundown of the images below: 1-3 are from the opener, “in chains”. the show started with a still shot of an old man and young boy. throughout the song they morphed into eachother. there was also a woman walking up stairs the whole time, changing into business suits, sweats and bikinis. the second or third song of the set featured the black crow and creepy eyeball looking around throughout. the typewriter pic was during “precious”. the astronauts were from “enjoy the silence” and were the three members of the band walking around the screen, each stopping with their faces in a fisheye lens in the middle of the screen. the last two pics were from, i believe, personal jesus, which had flashing screens of the band members and silhouettes of dancers. pretty cool stuff.

they started out with a lot of what i think were newer songs and to be honest, the set got off to a slow start. louis was even contemplating leaving. but then they definitely kicked it up a notch and had the whole crowd moving. enjoy the silence broke out into a 5 minute electronic dance interlude in the middle of the song, as did a few other songs, leaving the crowd very satisfied at the end. their encore ended with personal jesus, and nobody left for a good 5 minutes as we all waited for them to return to the stage since there was still time left, but they did not return, and that was it for day 1.

the friends i came with had already left since a few of them werent feeling great, undoubtedly due to the 20 ounce beers and incessant rain combo, so i began the long trek back on my own, walking probably a mile before catching a cab, but i did get some quasi good crowd shots on my way back.

the end of lollapalooza day 1

i got back to nicks place, took one of those great post-festival showers, and met up with some college friends for a few drinks down the street. i didnt stay out too late though, because i knew that there would be crazy weather change on saturday for day 2, one that involved intense heat.

spiritualized live

tomorrow is the big day everyone, which means that today is (lucky for you) the last day in our look back at the 2008 pitchfork music festival. the next few days will either be artists playing that day or quick looks back at the day we had at the festival, and then we will finally return to our regularly scheduled programs next week. today is an interesting post because im going to be writing about a band i didnt even see, well at the festival at least. near the end of the last day, we headed over to the B stage to see bon iver, while mike stayed back at the A stage to see spiritualized. i had never heard of spiritualized, but while we waited for bon iver to begin as they started a little later than anticipated, we could hear faint mumblings of the spiritualized show from across the park, and it sounded excellent. luckily they ended up playing a show in detroit at my favorite, st andrews, just a few weeks later so i was able to see them for myself. mike was supposed to attend but he bailed after i bought my ticket, which also marked my first solo show ever (mike — dont think i forgot about that). but it was still fun and super empty, so i was able to be right up front.

todays song is “ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space” and you may recognize it from the vanilla sky soundtrack (gosh do i love that movie). without the bitter, the sweet just aint as sweet. but dont let the slowness and rock-ballady feel of this song fool you, because spiritualized means business, especially live in concert. the combination of turning every song into a huge rock gospel piece, complete with abstract walls of noise and gospel backup singers, sounded exactly what you think a show by a band called spiritualized would sound like. holy cow cant wait to see them again.
