I hadn’t given much of my attention to the works of S. Carey, probably most notably known as the drummer of the Bon Iver gang of rabble rousers, but it turns out he’s got a good thing going all on his own. He’s releasing the Hoyas EP on May 8 and we’ve gotten to hear the opening track “Two Angles”, a slower number that becomes more and more atmospheric and consequently beautiful as it goes on. Does anyone love surprise horns in a song more than I do? I doubt it.

Yes folks, that’s right! If you didn’t get enough of my top 20 albums of the year on Monday (check it here in case you missed it), we’ve decided to take all of that musical goodness and serve it up in mixtape form for your listening pleasure. That’s right, each of the 20 tracks on this mixtape is either a track from one of my top 20 albums or a remix of a track from one of my top 20 albums. And since I like to keep things neat and orderly and easy to keep track of, I’ve organized the tracks in reverse order from 20 to 1. So as you listen to this mixtape, you are actually listening to an audio countdown of my top 20 albums starting at number 20 and going all the way down to number 1. So you can even follow along with my top 20 list if the spirit moves you (which would be kind of weird if it did).

I think this is a pretty cool mixtape because there are lots of ups and downs. Sometimes there are a few songs in a row that are really electronic and upbeat, and then it chills out for a few songs, and all in all just some really nice moments in time. And thanks to The Golden Filter and The Morning Benders, it even has an extremely creepy beginning!

As always, we’ve provided a zip file of the individual tracks that you can download right here, but it’s much better for everyone involved (and a much better user experience) if you download the one continuous track by clicking on that nifty little down arrow in the soundcloud player below. Because that’s the best way to get the full mixtape experience in my opinion. So without further ado, here is what 2010 sounded like to me. I happen to think it sounds pretty good, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed all of these albums this year, if not more.

This concludes our 2010 year in coverage. We hope the last three days have been as enjoyable as an all day House Hunters/Income Propert/Property Virgins marathon [via the HGTVs]. Sandra Rinomato is pretty keut. She really understands the real estate market. She really ‘gets it’. Wonder what it feels like to make that big sale. Wonder what it feels like to be a ‘commercial success’ on an ‘up and coming cable network’.

That was my pathetic attempt at a tribute to a site that I’d often read, but one whose brilliance I only just realized. Of course I’m talking about Hipster Runoff. Carles just has such a great way of describing what its like to be an alt trying to make it in this crazy world. Just trying to understand what it’s all about. Here’s the closing segment from his Sirius XMU 2 year anniversary show which aired just this past Monday. It’s a pretty bloggable mp3. If you’ve never heard his radio show, its usually not so reverb-y, but it’s always as painfully honest. Catch what Carles has to say about his anniversary here. “What does it feel like 2 orgasm/do drugs/own a macbook?” And I think he’s had a pretty good 2k10, even though no mp3s ever saved it.

This song title has blasphemy written all over it. I mean, how could you take a classic folky jam like Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” and try to make it over into anything other than what it was? As this is undoubtedly my favorite song of his (me along with everyone else, right?), I was at first appalled by the gross injustice that was likely splattered throughout this remix. But then after giving it a listen I was pleasantly surprised and actually pretty glad that this rerub existed. South Africa’s 19 year old Das Kapital added just enough to this killer tune to give it a fresh new flavor without bastardizing or disrespecting the beauty of the original. I think “rerub” is the perfect way to describe this rework. Just a little something extra and some perfectly placed piano chords without splicing and dicing the original. I’m beginning to realize that some of my favorite remixes these days are the ones that are the most restrained and not the big in your face bangers. Although I have been known to enjoy those from time to time too.

Is it really November already? Based on the fact that my toes have been cold for a few days now, it’s safe to say that it’s here. But October was great for several reasons. Like the fact that we saw some of our favorite shows of the year (can you say Gorillaz, Blonde Redhead and Hot Chip?) and a whole slew of great new tunes. Here are your favorites from last month, and a nice list it is.

1. Hey Champ – Cold Dust Girl (Gemini Club Remix)

2. Kanye West ft. Bon Iver – Lost In The World

3. First Aid Kit – When I Grow Up (Fever Ray Cover)

4. Alexander – Truth

5. Daft Punk – Derezzed (NTEIBINT edit)

Does this mean I’ve officially sold out? Another Kanye tune? I know, I know, I don’t understand it either. And much less one featuring full on auto-tune? I’ve been pretty vocal about my dislike for this device, so to avoid being hypocritical I will point out that it’s being used to in a slightly more non-traditional way (with the crazy harmonies and all that), rather than just being used by rappers who may not have a great singing voice (not hating, just stating). This tune is a rework of the (infamous?) track “Woods” from Bon Iver‘s Blood Bank EP and is a great example of how autotune can be used for good when (presumably) hooked up to some sort of keyboard (Imogen Heap style). And I gotta say, there’s a fantastic/high-impact transition from the slower first half of the tune to when the beat kicks in. I hate to say it because we all know my opinions of Kanye as a person, but he seems to really be on a roll this year (minus that douchebag song). And a Lionel Richie “All Night Long” allusion doesn’t lose him any points either. But maybe the best part of this tune is imagining the conversation between Kanye and Justin the first time they talked.

For the second Saturday afternoon in a row, I finally decide to give a listen to a much hyped brand new track that seems to have the internet abuzz with excitement. Last week, it was Cee-Lo Green, and this week, begrudginly, it’s Kanye West. Well, Kanye West plus a few million other cool people. But for me, the most interesting part about this star-studded track is that, surrounded and unintimidated by the hip-hop powerhouses all around her (not to mention indie powerhouse Bon Iver who, honestly, I wouldn’t have recognized in this track were it not for the song title), Nicki Minaj takes the reigns and is the real star of this track. It’s no surprise they give her the (technically?) final verse, which she handles like the best of them. It’s no surprise in the graphic above that her name is bigger than all the rest. Not gonna lie, I never really listened to anything Nicki Minaj, maybe because I always assumed she was a cheesy pop star with a little bit of edge, but one that I still wouldn’t be a fan of. But now, it’s clear to me that she’s anything but. She’s a mothafuckin monster.

While so many of us have been awaiting a follow up to Bon Iver’s classic debut “For Emma Forever Ago”, we’ve definitely learned that Justin Vernon is a lot more versatile than we once may have thought. After his unforgettable folk-ish debut, we saw his more experimental side when he teamed up as a part of the Volcano Choir album “Unmap” (which I just so happen to rather enjoy) in the latter half of last year. And now, he’s teamed up again, this time as part of Gayngs, the collective featuring Vernon, Ryan Olsen, and members of Solid Gold, among so many others.

And from the one track we’ve heard thus far, this album is going to take us back to the 80s. But not in an Erasure dance-y sort of way. No, we’re talking sleazy, smoky 80s music that seems perfect for a late night rendezvous at an dark alley location made for sweet lovin’. And as the various promo videos suggest, we might not be too far off in that assessment. Either way, I’m sort of liking this first track, “The Gaudy Side of Town”, and am looking forward to seeing if the rest of the album follows suit. The album is released May 11, but you can preorder beginning on April 20 (perhaps better known as 4/20) and can download the album starting on that date if you preorder. What kind of project do you think Justin Vernon will get involved with next?

kids at the bar

its friday. i have to apologize, because while i fully stand behind every song i put up here, i sort of set a precedent for beat-tastic music on fridays, and while the past few fridays have featured great songs, they havent always been beat-tastic. so im going back to the way things used to be in a big way today. ellie goulding is a british artist that is currently recording her first album but is already making big waves with her first single, you guessed it, “under the sheets”. while her stuff so far is mostly of the upbeat ilkage ripe for remixing, shes got a softer side too, as evidenced by the lovely cover of bon ivers “wolves” that can be found on her myspace (even if she did remove the big climax at the end of the song).

i apologize for anyone listening to this early in the morning at work, as it may not be appropriate for the time of day. because it kind of makes me want to, to quote a friend, fist pump my face off. and we have oklahoma citys kids at the bar to thank for the fist pump inspiration. it totally reminds me of the many hours spent this august in the perrys area at lollapalooza. be sure to check out their myspace page for some more remixes, including one of empire of the suns walking on a dream, the very first track ever to be featured here on dailybeatz many moons (6 months) ago.
