Today is going to be a study in “buzz bands I assumed I wouldn’t like so didn’t listen to, then months later found out I really liked them.” This will be exemplified through a case study of The Morning Benders. A few months back, everyone was raving about The Morning Benders. I didn’t really love the song “Excuses” (I think I felt like it was a bit too “In an Aeroplane Over the Sea” for me or something) so I basically ignored these calls to arm. Then I decided I was going to listen to the album just to see what all the fuss was about. But in typical fashion, I listened to it at work in the background without paying any attention, and when nothing grabbed my attention I forgot about it. Then I found out that I was going to be seeing them live as openers for Broken Bells, so I should probably give the album another listen. This time, I paid attention and I ended up listening to the album that whole day before the show. Then I really enjoyed their live show (on top of being surprised by their youthful appearance). And now I can confidently say that I think The Morning Benders are legit/the real deal.
My favorite song on the album is by far “Stitches”. Why, you ask? Well, first off, we know I’m a sucker for a song with a big build up, and this one certainly fits that bill. Second, the simple three chord riff that’s repeated over and over just makes me feel good inside. Even though I’ve probably heard these three chords in succession thousands of times, for some reason it just feels different here. I’m actually pretty surprised that I haven’t seen this song getting more love. It was especially great live as their set opener.
