Let me start off my first guest appearance on dailybeatz by saying this: one of the best things in life (in my opinion of course) is finding those who are just as passionately obsessed about something as you are. I am a music groupie, plain and simple. And even though I grew up an only child, I love sharing. Anytime someone shares their music with me, its like opening presents on Christmas morning (or Chanukah evenings if you will). I wake up with the excitement of knowing an unwrapped gift (or eight) awaits, ready to grace my ears with its intoxicating presence. And trust me, these ears are a spoiled pair, up and at ‘em every morning ready for more. So let me shine a light on a song given to me this week that I have yet to take off repeat for the past 24 hours (no joke). Brought to us by a DJ duo that goes by the name of The C90s, Remixed by Ted and Francis, and given to me by one of my favorite fellow bloggers. And seriously, I should send a Thank You card to all five of them because the moment this song sent its waves through my speakers, an instant “yup, I’m gonna like this” came out of my mouth. Out loud. As I sat in my apartment all alone. It’s Chromeo-esque vibe (with a lot more depth) has got me tied and bound by its musical powers. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, 1:58 strolls along and tattoos its melody on my heart. So innnnnn conclusion, I am a lover not a fighter, a giver AND a taker. I was given this song to enjoy and am now passing it on to all my fellow music obsessed groupies out there. You can thank Sesame Street for teaching this only child how to share….Enjoy.

Despite my less than favorable view on camping festivals (I’m exhausted enough at fests even with the luxuries of beds and showers), the on-paper highlight of this year’s Bonnaroo festival for me was without a doubt Daryl Hall & Chromeo. Those funky beats with that iconic 80s voice were sure to be something for the books. And with all the buzz I’ve heard this summer on NYC’s Holy Ghost!, there was plenty to look forward to when I found out both bands would be playing together at the Majestic Theater.
Holy Ghost! was just as dark and funky as I’d expected them to be. The set seemed a bit slow at first but that’s how their music rolls sometimes, and the energy level definitely picked up throughout the set. After opening gigs for LCD Soundsystem and now Chromeo, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear about these guys a lot more often in the coming months. MVP award goes to the guitar player in this round. And Chromeo rocked what must have been a sold out crowd (the most packed I’ve seen that venue) with their unique blend of funky fresh beats, the wicked guitar and vocals of Dave 1 and the hot keys and talk box of P-Thugg. An all out dancesplosion, and just what Detroit needed on a hot Thursday night.

adam kesher – hour of the wolf

Another hot track that I recently received via email, which is pretty refreshing because a lot of the stuff I’ve been getting recently is just not what I’m into at ALL. Not even a little. This one is by Adam Kesher which is actually a French band, and not a person. Does that remind anyone else of another dailybeatz favorite band who has a person’s name but is actually a band? This band gets some instant street cred because it was produced in party by Dave One from Chromeo, and everyone loves Chromeo. There are also some major nods from A-Trak and parts of Cassius, and that is never a bad thing.
“Hour of the Wolf” is the first single from the upcoming album Challenging Nature and is so high energy that it’s tough not to instantly like it for that reason alone. If the rest of the album is anything like this one, I’m definitely going to be on board with this group. You can download the single for free from the band’s website if you click here. Why is French music usually so great?

yuksek – so down

Another disco jam, this time from France’s Yuksek. Although the word means “high” in Turkish, Pierre-Alexandre Busson (unmistakably French) claims he just liked the way the word sounded, or rather how it didn’t sound like everything else in the electronic world. But what is in a name anyway? This fellow has put out some pretty great music of his own alongside some nice remixes for some pretty high profile artists, which you can conveniently find on his website.
This track, “So Down”, has been around for a while, but it’s still tres super. It features Chromeo, so it automatically has some pretty solid street cred, but one the song really begins after the harsh and abrupt intro, the funky disco keys hold up all on their own, enough to get even the piano movers to stop what they’re doing and dance to the beat. And it’s a pretty confident song lyrically, too, perhaps bordering on arrogant. “I’ve seen you walk in front of me/That body’s makin’ it hard to breathe/Better run and tell the guy you’re seein’/When he’s gone I’m doin’ it better.” But, really, isn’t that “confidence” sort of what electronic music is all about?

chromeo – night by night

if youve been waiting all week for a track to get you moving on this friday morning/afternoon/evening, look no further. montreal duo chromeo has come to the rescue. and as the duo is half jewish and half arab, these guys are the isreali/palestinian conflict come to a resolution, just like my friend jackie. and david macklovitch (guessing hes the jewish one) is the older brother of alain macklovitch, better known as a-trak. that mother must have been proud to birth not one, but two excellent musical acts. as a side note, based on the scenery, im pretty sure the above pic is from bonnaroo. makes me want to go to bonnaroo.
this new track “night by night” is pure 80s-infused magic that is sure to be infused into late night playlists all over the country, nay, the world (jon — im looking at you. get this shit on the playlist now!). if this doesnt get you moving a little in your seat as youre reading this then, well, i guess theres really no hope for you. good luck in the rest of your life as a boring person who refuses to have fun.
