Cults – Bumper

So last night, I finally remembered that I should listen to this new Cults album. The New York duo of Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion were pretty much the poster children in 2010 for blog buzz leading to, as Borat would say, “Great success!” with their 3 song EP appearing completely out of nowhere and sweeping the blogosphere, eventually leading to a record deal with Sony (yeah, one of those “major labels”). They’ve just recently finally released their self-titled debut album and since I enjoyed so many of the tunes that I’d already heard from the album, I couldn’t wait to listen to it in full. But, I kept forgetting to. Until last night. And it turns out that it’s pretty great. It’s got this total old school almost Motown vibe to it at times, but there was one track that stood out among the rest and that’s, you guessed it, “Bumper”. Almost definitely the most Motown sounding song on the album, there’s just a certain simple and understated soulfulness to this one, and I can’t get enough of the male and female vocals going back and forth. Such a great effect. I don’t know whether it was intentional or not, but releasing this album right at the cusp of spring turning into full blown summer (even though we didn’t have much of a spring this year) was pure genius. I can see this album soundtracking any sort of carefree summer activity I may partake in over the next few months.

Cults – Abducted

Cults, aka Madeleine Follin and Brian Oblivion (is that his real last name?) may perhaps be the best example of the blogosphere making an artist in recent history. The band completely out of nowhere released a 3 song EP early last year and within a matter of days they were posted on every website in town and later that year were signed to Columbia records and even performed at Coachella just last week. As the May 30 release of their highly anticipated album In The Name Of draws ever closer, we’ve gotten a chance to hear another new track, “Abducted”. I think the reason I like Cults is because they’ve got this total old school sound. It’s not really Motown, but it’s some sort of relative of that time period. It was ever present in their debut “Go Outside”, the recently released “You Know What I Mean” and definitely in this latest tune. In this case, there’s a total old school intro with some serious lo-fi vocals, and then just when you’re comfortable with that, you get smacked in the face with sound. I haven’t actually been following the group TOO closely, but I think this is the first time we hear some male vocals too, is this true? Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, because I am wrong quite a bit. That’s what happens when you go off what you think you remember hearing instead of “doing research”. Anyway, I like this tune.

Tampa producer Luminary Youth has recently released a brand new totally free EP entitled Weekend Dreams. The title pretty accurately sums up the sounds of the EP, which is made up of a combination of his own sample based glitch-hop tunes and some really awesome reworks of some really awesome songs. My favorite of these tune was his rework of “To The Lighthouse” by Memoryhouse which he calls “Jets to Bangalore”, in which he takes the song into some sort of interdimensional outer spacey place that just works so perfectly well with the distinct vocals of singer Denise Nouvion. He also has some pretty nice reworks of some of our other indie likes, namely Warpaint and Cults, the latter of which you will also find below. And his original tunes are pretty funky fresh as well. Hit up a few of the tracks below and if you like what you can hear, you can listen to and download the whole EP (not to mention his 2010 EP Paper Constellations for free over at his bandcamp page.

There have been a crazy multitude of husband and wife duos creating music and gaining, at the very least, internet popularity and in some cases (a la Cults) even getting record deals out of the ….deal. Some I’ve liked, others, not so much. But I am kind of feeling this sound from Philadelphia husband and wife Rob and Sarah, aka Reading Rainbow. And yes, they are clearly channeling THAT Reading Rainbow, as evidenced by their myspace URL, which is, of course, myspace.com/levarmotherfuckingburton. I mean, what else would it be? They’ve just recently released their full length debut album Prism Eyes and seem poised for good/big things with their fuzzy/poppy/garagey/overall happy but not over the top sound. There’s a certain retro je ne sais quoi to their tunes as well, especially “Always On My Mind”, which seems like it was pulled directly from the late 60′s for whatever reason. “Wasting Time” is pretty great too — a much more upbeat number, but equally vintage sounding/great. It’s almost reminds me of a less boring Vivian Girls/Dum Dum Girls (not hating y’all) where you can sort of understand some of the lyrics sometimes. Check out the brand spankin new video for “Always On My Mind” below as well.

Remember that awesome Cults remix a few weeks back courtesy of Brian Healey aka Brainbheats? Well he just dropped another killer remix, this time of one of my favorite Local Natives tunes, “Who Knows Who Cares?” He turns the track upside down, taking the slower tune and giving it a lightning fast electronic beat (especially in the second half. DAMN) and I can’t even describe the other electronic sounds going on but his soundcloud page tags the track with “gritty” “trashwave” and “electrodub”. It’s tough buying into remixes of songs when I love the originals as much as this one, but it totally works. I think the highlight might be the little breakdown at the 3:02 mark. Sick.

With all the hubbub about the Cults a few months back, I didn’t know if I was sold on them. It’s definitely fun music and a great story of how they went from obscurity to indie rock buzzband in a matter of days, but I needed something more. And I think that maybe the subtle but tasty Brainbheats Remix is that something. Brainbheats is the project of Mr. Brian Healey and from the looks of the bio on his website, it seems he’s a pretty accomplished musician whose performed with some of the greats. He’s taking his act to a live setting for the first time ever next month in Louisville so check him out even though he admittedly has no idea how it will go (I’m guessing it will go well to quite well). We first heard this track from our friends over at We Listen For You so make sure to pay them a visit as well if you aren’t already a loyal reader.
