CONTEST IS CLOSED. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED!

Make no mistake about it, regardless of the music we’ve been posting lately, we love a crazy, sweaty electronic dance party just as much as the next guy (if not more), and nobody seems to guarantee a great night like this better than Deadmau5. In fact, I couldn’t even bring myself to go to his last show in the area because it was on a Monday, and I typically require approximately 2 days to recover from a Deadmau5 show. Point is, Joel Zimmerman knows how to bring it. And with that being said, we’re happy to be giving away this Deadmau5/Ultra Records prize pack to one lucky winner. The prize pack contains all of the following (seen above):

1 Ultra T-shirt
1 Ultra sweatshirt
1 Ultra neck lanyard
1 Deadmau5 For Lack of a Better Name CD
1 Deadmau5 4×4=12 CD
1 Deamau5 Poster

There are two ways to enter:

1. Tweet the following (you can follow us on twitter right here if the spirit moves you):

Yo @dailybeatz, hit me up with that @deadmau5 prize pack, please, cuz I like to party. http://bit.ly/f2m7Wm

2. Leave a comment on this post with your favorite Deadmau5 track.

The deadline to enter is this Tuesday, January 25 at 11:59PM EST. We’ll pick one winner from all the entries. Good luck, and keep up that fist pump.

I recently recruited my good friend Jon Alexander to put together a mixtape for the site. His musical IQ is pretty high and I gave him free reign to pretty much do whatever he wanted. What I got back was a nice retrospective look into the world of electronic music and the experience of electronic music in Detroit. Here’s what Jon had to say about the mix:

When Chris asked me to curate a mixtape for Dailybeatz, there was not a moment of hesitation. I had to create an electronic and techno mix. From my first moment as a naive teenager stepping into a huge, old brick warehouse in Detroit and gazing through the translucence, bass levels rattling the floorboards and house beats thumping in my ears, I dreamed of recreating this sensational feeling of euphoria. It felt like emerging from a sensory cocoon as I wandered in a fugue, following the trails of light and sound to their respective sources. There was a substantial cadre of DJs spinning. I knew only one of them – Green Velvet. And he was playing late. Really late.

In putting this together, I wanted to evoke that feeling of spending an entire night out – what it felt like for me to hop in the car with three of my friends, throw on a cd, and drive to god knows where in the city. Sometimes the sun would be rising on the drive back, the entire lot of us exhausted, stinking of smoke and sweat, silent except for wistful expressions of rapture and lassitude. I included both the old and the new, with some significant Detroit representation. The final quarter of the mix ends with a decidedly old school flavor, closing with one of my favorite electronic tracks of all time – elder statesmen Orbital’s early-90s classic “Belfast.” I had one hour to try and encapsulate what most DJs would spend four to six hours doing. But I had an absolute blast doing it, and I hope you dig it.

As usual, we’ve provided the download 2 ways. You can download the zip file below which includes the individual tracks and front/back cover art, OR you can click on the download button in the soundcloud player below to download the whole mix as one continuous track. Of course the continuous track is more likely to give you the full effect of the mix, but the choice is up to you. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. And we hope to hear more mixtapes from Jon in the future as well.

For the last three days, you’ve all been hearing about the video. I’ve never made a video before, so I was a bit worried about it, but just tried to capture as many moments in time as I could in hopes that they could be spliced together into something not terrible. And now that the video is complete (thanks to iMovie being super easy to use), the time has come to share it with the world! I’m mostly happy because normally I would talk about doing something like this and find myself with 15 seconds of video at the end of the weekend. So I was happy to learn that I can, in fact, sometimes follow through.

WARNING: This was all shot on my old point and shoot camera, so the quality is going to look extremely grim in comparison to any other Coachella videos you’ve likely already watched. But I think it gives mine a more “authentic” feel to it. The everyday man’s Coachella recap video.

The theme of the video, much like the weekend, is night and day. And this seemed to be the perfect song to use for such a theme.

Wasn’t that fun? Did it make you a little nauseous? I hope not, but I can see how it could.

Here are some other final thoughts on the weekend, and then I will stop talking about Coachella, except for constantly and incessantly referencing it.

- This was my first Coachella ever, so I have no frame of reference, though it seemed like a lot of people were bitching about how crowded it was. Compared to other fests I’ve been to, this was by far the least crowded, and not only that, it was extremely easy to get relatively close up for almost any show, minus maybe a headliner or two, without camping out all day. It seemed that for the most part, this crowd didn’t really stick around from one show to the next, so if you were in position as soon as the previous show ended, you could usually get within the first 15 or 20 rows without a problem. Major plus.

- Favorites of the weekend. In no particular order, Fever Ray (queen of darkness), Local Natives (killer afternoon set. Just killer), Miike Snow (they always bring the heat, but it got even more broughten in a packed tent as the sun went down), Aeroplane (of all the fantastic DJs I saw all weekend, their mix of songs was the most right up my alley. And they saved what started out a miserable day). Honorable mention to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. I loved everything about it but I couldn’t get over the vocal issues. That being said, they got huge bonus points for happiness, quirkiness and energy and general fun. But really, I enjoyed most of the acts I saw quite a bit.

- Wish I would’ve seens. Thom Yorke, not sure what I was thinking on this one. Hot Chip, because I don’t know when I’ll get to see these guys again. Deadmau5, despite conflicting with Fever Ray and even though I just saw him recently, mostly because of this video I saw of his SIIIIIIIICK dj table. Shit looks crazy!

- I said it before, but the Sahara tent is off the hinges. The crazy lights and all day dance party are not to be missed. The only downside, the kids and their drugs. I’m not juding anyone based on what drugs they want to take, but I am judging people who are stupid and irresponsible about it. I had at LEAST 5 people directly surrounding me throughout the weekend just collapse and pass out. It was really gross to see. At the Gorillaz show, the guy behind me collapsed right on his face and didn’t wake up for a solid ten minutes. His friends’ response? “He’s done this a few times today, but he always gets right back up.” Like I said, I’m not juding anyone’s recreational drug use, but at least try to be responsible about it, and look out for your friends. It didn’t help that most of these people looked like they were barely old enough to drive a car.

- Cancellations. Shit happens, and it sucks. Nothing anyone could have done about any of it, but still grim to say the least. But overall I was happy with the acts I did get to see. And the people who are like “I maybe saw one good performance this weekend” on the message boards need to stop going to shows, because what’s the point if you never have a good time?

- The overall ambiance of the fest is the best I’ve ever experienced. The Chicago skyline as the backdrop of Lollapalooza is pretty spectacular, but being surrounded on all sides by endless palm trees and mountains is both spectacular and extremely relaxing.

- The layout of the fest is also one of the best I’ve seen. The long and narrow Lolla setup leads to inevitable clusterfucks left and right. And Bonaroo’s circular setup is a better alternative. But it seems like it only takes 10 minutes to walk from one end of Coachella to the other. A major plus when you’re trying to catch consecutive shows at opposite stages. The setup does lead to some issues, however, like when the whole world was trying to see MGMT and the crowd was essentially surrounding the Outdoor Stage (where the band was performing) and extended all the way back through the Gobi and Mojave tents.

- Cameras. What do people think about bringing their nice cameras? I saw millions of them and it seemed like security was allowing them for some reason, so I was debating all weekend if I wished I would have brought mine. I think that I wouldn’t want to have to worry about it getting damaged, a very distinct possibility in those crowds, but I was also pretty underwhelmed with my shots, so I guess it’s a trade-off. I think a small handheld video camera may be in order for my next fest, however.

- Diplo got some major props this weekend. Aside from what I hear was an absolutely bonkers Major Lazer set, both David Guetta and supergroup Club 75 included “Pon de Floor” in their sets. Not too shabby.

- The tents. The tents are good and bad. If you are inside the tent, they are amazing. I love the enclosed feel, the shade they provide, and the great sound. However, when the tents start to overflow and you find yourself on the outside, they kind of blow. But as long as you can arrive a little early to the show you’re seeing, this is usually not an issue.

Misc.
- Throw away your garbage, people.
- Children, stop trying to get to the front 5 seconds before (or after) a show starts with all 45 of your closest friends hand in hand. Spend more time making sure your 45 friends aren’t on course to have a drug-induced death scare before the day is over.
- What’s with all the feathers and face paint?
- There’s going to be traffic whenever tens of thousands of people are in one place. Deal wit’ it. Or drive over the fence like the guy in front of me did, saving me at least a half hour on the way out.

Thanks to Beta Mike for the rad pic above that I stole from him.

Here’s to a great Coachella 2011. I leave with a few remixes by Aeroplane, the act that really kicked things off for me this year.

Au Revoir Simone – Another Likely Story (Aeroplane Remix)

camera obscura @ the crofoot 11.27.09

this past friday marked the long awaited camera obscura show at the crofoot out in pontiac. it seemed like we bought our tickets years ago but the time had arrived at last. i started out the night at redcoat tavern for a delicious burger and somehow was able to get a table and eat in a matter of an hour and a half while some people had been waiting two hours just to be seated, and thanks to beth and jenny learned the importance of adding guacamole to that burger.

i finally arrived a little before 9pm and after a blustery wait in line i was in the door, camera in tow. it was nice to not have to worry about the overbearing camera police that were present the last time i was at a show here. i met up with the crew and we found our spot on the main floor. opening act was papercuts out of san francisco and they were very low key but enjoyable. i guess when my last exposure to live music was deadmau5 less than a week before, my energy expectations were through the roof, so it wasnt really fair, but i did like them. i ventured up to the front for a second to snap a few shots which were way too dark and unsalvagable and i met camera girl who was there with presumably her boyfriend also snapping some shots.

next up was the main event and almost as soon as they began playing, i felt a tap on my shoulder. it was camera girl again and she dragged me with her right up to the front where she and her boyfriend had carved out a spot. after taking whatever i can in the less than ideal lighting (i guess everything will always be less than ideal after the lighting juggernaut that was phish), i went up to the balcony to get what i could get.

camera obscuras performance was great in my opinion. they were a bit more upbeat than the papercuts (thats not a knock on the papercuts, for the record) and had some nice local onstage banter, talking about how they arrived in pontiac earlier and didnt see anyone around, and how they heard that tiki bobs cantina is the place to go if youre looking to get laid. apparently it doesnt take too long for the sometimes seedy bars in pontiac to make their impression on out of towners. tracyanne (who seemed to resemble zooey deschanel more than i remembered) had a few self proclaimed wardrobe malfunctions which she handled with poise and a sense of humor (one captured below — dont get too excited, there were no janet jackson impressions) and they bustled through their set to a gracious crowd. the set ended with perhaps their most energetic songs, “lloyd im ready to be heartbroken” and “french navy” and the crowd responded appropriately. the group thanked us with a three song encore, including their newly released track “the blizzard”.

some salvageable pics are below, and as usual you can check them out in a bit better quality on the dailybeatz flickr page but to be quite honest they look a lot nicer at this smaller size. it does give the pics a more intimate feel though.

deadmau5 @ the fillmore detroit 11.21.09

first off, i know its the state theater. i figured i need to be somewhat official for all of the web searchers out there in cyberspace tryna get all up on this post. now, two show reviews two days in a row? well, last week was just that kind of week, which is never a bad thing. for all of you who hate these recaps of detroit music events, sorry bout your luck. but for the rest of you, there will be another one next week too, and then probably another the week after, so get excited for that.

ive been pretty excited to see deadmau5 ever since lollapalooza and i arrived at the venue at about 830 or so because diana and julie didnt have tickets and the show was sold out. after some sneaky detective work and a bit of negotiation, we found ourselves all with general admission tickets, which was pretty huge because it sounds like there were not too many tickets to go around after they snagged theirs. we waited outside for a half hour or so but finally made our way in. i took a lovely picture of the marquee outside, but i must have accidentally deleted it during my 3am deletion of all completely ridiculous pictures that could never be salvaged. so that was kind of sad. but i did see my next door neighbor zack just before going inside.

we made it inside after some thorough camera bag searching and got a couple of $9 drinks (i always forget how expensive the drinks are there) and i ran into niki who i hadnt seen since college many moons ago. in fact, i believe her quote was, “really? i havent seen you since college and i see you at deadmau5?” then we ran into jonny who we ended up hanging with for the better part of the evening. we wandered around for a bit noticing the large and elaborate deadmau5 masks that littered the crowd (i think i counted 7 or 8 throughout the night but its hard to tell) and finally burns began. he started out a bit slow but really pumped it up near the end of his set (i wonder if the opening djs are contractually obligated to do that because it seems like they usually do) and then it was on to the main event. (again, all pics plus many more can be viewed in higher quality on the dailybeatz flickr page.)

then it was time for the main event. we saw the black objects all over the stage and figured that they were probably some sort of lighting mechanism but when the show began, they all turned into mini video screens that worked together. it was sort of like a much smaller scale version of the radiohead set from last summers tour except coming up from the ground rather than hanging from the ceiling. which inevitably led to a conversation over stalagmites vs stalagtites. we decided that none of us knew which was which.

the crowd was just as wild as lollapalooza if not more (since they had not just endured an entire day of 90+ degree heat) and it turned into an all out party. we each acquired a glowstick bracelet so that we would have something around our wrists for the inevitable fist pumping that was going to take place and tried our best not to get trampled and/or contract shingles from the sometimes questionable crowd. i made my way to the front where i breathed a breath of fresh air and tried to snap some pics, which was made more difficult because of my short stature and the tall video screen in front of deadmau5. i was pleasantly surprised that i had some decent shots of the mask when i got home cuz i thought i had nothin.

as the night continued i made my way up to the balcony for some shots from the left and right and of course it never occurred to me to, you know, maybe take some shots from dead center. that would be way too logical for me. diana and julie headed out a bit early just in time to miss the crowd going nuts when daft punks “harder, better, faster, stronger” was mixed with muse’s “knights of cydonia”. i luckily had just returned to the pit up front a last ditch attempt to take some more pics before this. i think my favorite part of my recent stint shooting shows is just how much people love getting their pictures taken. the couple below asked me to take their picture, at which point the proceeded to try to eat eachothers throats, but hey, at a show like this, anything is fair game. to the two lebanese guys, i know i said your picture would be up here but i got home and the picture was complete shite. sorry about that. the energy was thick on this night, and deadmau5 delivered. please enjoy the photographs below and check out mah flickr page for more shots.

its pretty tough to review a dj set, because while you dont really remember more than one or two specific moments or songs that were played, you always remember how much fun you had. man, im exhausted just thinking about how exhausted i was when i got home saturday night. it was a total blast as expected. enjoy this song while you think about how much you wish you were there and how you will make sure never to miss a local event like this again. this song should strike your fancy as it features one of the most recognizable video game theme songs of our generation, but have no fear,in true deadmau5, the rest of the track does not fake the funk on a nasty dunk.

the guess who

the guess who is the winnipeg band that everyone knows for singing “american woman” (not to be confused with the popular boardgame, as seen here being played by samuel l jackson). but that song kind of annoys me a lot of the time, maybe because i heard the lenny kravitz version a few million times when it came out. but luckily todays song is way more awesomer in my opinion. i always thought the song was called “shes come undone” for obvious reasons, but it just sounded like the name of a song i remembered. but its actually called “undun”, which is interesting because it seems to me like it was much later than 1969 when people started spelling songs phonetically instead of the way they were actually spelled. im pretty sure that actually began in the 90s with the advent of email/aim/loling/roftling. either way its a subtle and quasi-jazzy little number that i enjoy. i also really enjoy “these eyes”, also by the guess who.

on a COMPLETELY unrelated note, going to see deadmau5 tonight. should be very fun and very nuts. now enjoy the show.

lollapalooza day 3

after a fun night out in wicker park and sleeping in a nice and air conditioned apartment, i was a little weary about getting to the festival at 1230 pm, knowing i would be in the hot sun for 8 or 9 hours that day, but thanks to nick dropping me off downtown, i was able to get there and be in place 3 or 4 people from the stage at about 1215 to meet up with karen, louis and nikki. even those first 15 minutes were completely unbearable but we sort of forgot about it once friendly fires started.

friendly fires – white diamonds

their show was an hour of non-stop beats, dancing, and even some electronic jams. i was expecting big things from their live show and got even more than i wanted. having never been to a 1230 show at lollapalooza, id have to imagine it was one of the best, highest energy 1230 shows out there, especially for such a hot day. even though nikki had to sit part of it out thanks to david guetta at soundstage the night before, and i almost passed out in the middle of it, im so glad i made it there in time. lead singer ed macfarlane was a total rock star. manning the dj equipment throughout the set, he danced and flailed all over the stage and even sang a whole song almost in the middle of the crowd in the open area leading to the soundbooth. and though it could have been cliche and cheesy, he totally pulled it off.

after the dancing in the heat almost did us all in before the day even began, we decided it was time to chill in the shade at perrys where we spent the next hour or two. i hoped to make it to the other side of the park to catch bat for lashes, but with the intense heat it just wasnt going to happen. i took a nice little nap under the trees during car stereo (wars) which was, as the name suggests, a mashup dj. some good stuff, and some not great, but it was still enjoyable. then i split off on my own and decided to post up at the citi stage for the better part of the rest of the day.

after eating another order of those delicious french fries (still cooked to perfection), i made my way up close for gang gang dance. i dont know much about them other than a few songs, and that their music is very out there and electronic and experimental, and as the weekend seemed to be all about electronic for me, i decided i wanted to check them out live.

when their show began, it was equally as weird as i thought it would be. they started out with about a 10 minute abstract drum/dj type thing that didnt really have a steady beat. i think they were trying to work out some technical difficulties throughout the first half of the set. when that was done, they went into the two songs i knew, house jam and vacuum, which were both great. the last half of the set was straight up dancing and the crowd was loving every minute of it.

gang gang dance lollapalooza 1
gang gang dance lollapalooza 2

this was one of my favorite shows from the weekend as well. lead singer liz bougatsos reminded me a bit of maryann from true blood. as the show progressed and she continued with her temptress dances, the clouds began to roll in. at times she started screaming out “let it rain! let the rain fall down!” to the incessant cheers of the crowd who, after sweating for hours, would have gladly welcomed a downpour, and im sure the crowd would have gone nuts if it actually rained at that moment, like it appeared it would. had she actually made it rain with her rain dance, it would have been the show of the weekend.

gang gang dance – house jam

once that ended, i posted up for passion pit. im still not sure if this was a good idea or an ill-conceived mistake. karen made it up to the front with me only to leave shortly after when she realized was a disaster it was going to be. the show was excellent but the crowd was awful. really, who crowd surfs to “little secrets” (posted below for reference)? the same drunk people kept going up over the crowd time and time again. and then there was the group of deerhunter fans loudly and obnoxiously cheering “A-T-L! A-T-L!” throughout the entire show (as well as the better part of the gang gang dance show). there were definitely some fun moments being up close in that crowd, but the bad outweighed the good and i didnt even attempt to take out my camera for this show.

passion pit – little secrets

the best part about sticking it out was that, finally, after many attempts, i was able to make it to the front row, right in the middle, hanging on the rail for deerhunter. the show began pretty uneventfully, but after a song or two, we learned that lead singer bradford cox was all hopped up on some b12 shot he got and that he thinks he has H1N1. he kept telling us that all he saw was a sea of faceless flesh, and he looked a few times like he was going to pass out. well, i think he always looks like hes about to pass out because of his insanely tall and lanky body, but thats another story. then he started referencing lou reed and snoop dogg (both playing at the same time as deerhunter) and even started playing a few tunes for 10 seconds at a time. outside of the entertaining weirdness of the commentary, the show rocked hard. it was tough to hear the vocals at times but i think it was just cuz i was right up there. “nothing ever happened”, one of my favorites of theirs, was especially great with a nice jam on the ending theme. i took a ton of pictures too.

so then it was time to head back across the park for some mstrkrft fun, and after another batch of delicious potstickers i was back at perrys. i decided i didnt want to see janes addiction or the killers and after a failed meetup attempt with ursula and karen heading to the killers, i closed out my festival alone at perrys with deadmau5 (which, much to my surprise, is pronounced deadmouse, and not deadmaufive). i made some new friends in the crowd and had a blast, and after running into nikki one more time, it was time to call it a weekend, but not before taking 2 last extremely blurry shots of perrys.

deadmau5 at lollapalooza
deadmau5 at lollapalooza 2

i dont really know how i made it back to nicks apartment that night without passing out/collapsing, much less showered and packed up to leave first thing in the morning to head up north. the 5 nights up north, however, proved to be just the relaxation and recovery period i needed.

quick tidbits about the weekend:
favorite shows – miike snow, friendly fires

biggest surprises – miike snow, gang gang dance

best area ever – perrys.

only people i didnt run into – little lauren and molly. somehow i ran into everyone else i knew that would be there without even trying.

favorite food – star of siam pot stickers and french fries from stand i cant remember. actually, i think thats the only food i ate on the festival grounds all weekend, minus the next item on the list.

best deal ever – the GIANT slice of watermelon for only $2

best idea ever – bringing my camelpak after not planning on bringing it, but then seeing the weather forecast for the weekend.

festival lessons learned: dont be afraid to branch out on your own, or youll likely miss many of the shows you want to see most. and you will always see less shows than you think you will.

tomorrow, back to our usual shtick. i hope youve enjoyed my recap and often bad/blurry pictures. one day ill get a nice camera (and, in my dreams, a press pass).
