First off, I kind of really like the picture above. It might be among my favorite live pics that I’ve taken.

A few years back I had tickets to see Spoon at the Majestic Theater. I can’t remember what happened, but for one reason or another I sold my ticket and couldn’t go. Then the following summer, they were playing a free show as part of the Detroit Tastefest (now known as the “Comerica Cityfest”, but it will always be the tastefest, just as the Fillmore will always be the State Theater, and the way that DTE will always be Pine Knob. But it was on the 4th of July, and I was on the lake, so I called my friend to say I wasn’t going. Then a few weeks later, they were closing out the last night of the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago. I was at the B stage watching the famous/infamous Cut Copy 4-song festival-closing set and didn’t see them.

So when I purchased my ticket for this show, my fourth attempt at seeing Spoon (I really hope someone is reading that will get this joke, but here goes anyway. “Dan, the scholarship committee has decided to give you….a fourth chance.”) And somehow, some way, I made it there for the 3-band lineup. Since I’m always late for shows, I missed the openers The Strange Boys. Sorry for that.

But I knew I was going to get there in time to see the second band, Deerhunter out of the ATL (or thereabouts), I was not going to miss it. I’d seen them once before from the front row at Lollapalooza back year and took some shabby photographs, so I was happy to have another opportunity to hear them and to catch them on film with a legit camera.

I’ve never been a huge fan of the sound at the Royal Oak Music Theater (I don’t remember much about the Bloc Party show there a few years back, a classic night of debauchery for every one of my friends that was there, but I do remember the sound being awful), and this was no exception. The band sounded great from up front, but as soon as you moved back at all it was a muddled mess. It sucked because I knew they were ripping it. Of course, “Nothing Ever Happened” was one of the highlights, but the REAL highlight (perhaps because they didn’t play it the first time I’ve seen them, and it’s one of my favorite 2-3 minute ditties) was their closing “Disappearing Ink”, which they jammed out for probably 7 or 8 minutes. It was pretty killer, bad sound and all.

A few songs before this, Bradford Cox was informing us that even after we left the show that night, he would be with us. He would always be with us. Terrorizing us in our dreams, whether we liked it or not. I thought it was rather hilarious, especially since he was speaking all of this through an echo effect, making it even weirder/creepier. But I don’t think the rest of the crowd picked up on his humor. And just before the final song began, he apologized and said that he would try to redeem himself. And then the band played the aforementioned jammed out “Disappearing Ink”, and in my opinion, Mr. Cox more than redeemed himself, even though I never felt there was anything calling for redemption in the first place. And as always, you can see all of these pics in higher quality on the dailybeatz Flickr page.

I’ve posted this song before, but I just think it’s that great as a quick and awesome rock song.

So next up was the main event, Spoon, who fate and circumstance had prevented me from seeing live so many times before. I don’t really know what I was expecting out of them live. But whatever I was expecting was exceeded. I also learned something really interesting about myself. I recognize and can hum along to just about any Spoon song, but I don’t really know the names of any of them. Why is that?

As the show began, I decided I would wait a few songs with my friends before I tried to get some photos, after all, nobody had told me that there was a 3-song limit or anything, and once I left I probably wouldn’t make it back to my friends anyway. So as I entered the pit in the middle of the third song, I took about 10 pictures and was told our time was up. Disaster. Luckily I got a few that were half-deece. So luckily.

As for the performance itself, I think I was surprised by a few things. The first is the energy. I don’t usually think of Spoon as a super high-energy band, I think I consider them more kind of laid back rock. But they were firing on all cylinders, in my opinion at least, and the crowd was enjoying it quite a bit. The next thing I really liked was the pretty cool light show. It wasn’t anything extremely over the top, but it always worked really well with the music. There were these candle looking lights that at times looked a little MTV Unplugged, but all in all it was visually entertaining. The band was in front of these color changing giant geometric shapes that provided a nice contrast against the black backdrop. And the third thing that surprised me was their use of effects throughout. I think this was especially apparent in the official “really cool song that I sort of forgot about and didn’t really know that I liked so much until just now”, which in this case was “The Ghost of You Lingers”. I think it just doesn’t sound like anything else they’ve got, and it was pretty great live with the lights and effects and whatnot.

The band came out for what I remember as a 4-song encore which included (I think) “I Turn My Camera On” among a few others and closed with “The Underdog”. I think this show made me realize how much I really like Spoon even though I don’t usually think to listen to them. But that seems to be the way I feel about so much music lately, so it’s always nice to rediscover.

Here’s one of my favorites from their recent album Transference which I kind of dig and which I was happy to hear live. It’s got a nice breakdown in the second half that I enjoy. Just promise me you’ll wait for it. And then look at the couple of pics I was able to snap.

atlas sound

as we begin a new month, it seemed like it was time for another theme week. every day this week we will be bringing you a song with a chicks name in the title. not only will these songs feature a different chicks name every day, most of the names will be pretty uncommon names. kind of makes me wish i hadnt already posted two songs i love entitled sylvia and silvia already. do you think any of the names of the people in these songs have been changed to protect anyones identities? i dont either. first up is atlas sound, the solo/side project of deerhunter frontman bradford cox. while he may be too thin for anyones good, he definitely has a great ear for music.

the song is “shelia” from his latest album “logos” and i didnt much care for it the first time i heard it, but man has it grown on me since. im not quite sure what it is, but theres just something about these three chords that are repeated over and over that has been sticking with me. and i like how the chords are slowed down at parts then back to normal speed. such a simple technique that makes such a great sound. its kind of a grim song though, which i think is mostly about being with someone just for the sake of not being alone. which i think is encapsulated in the line “we’ll die alone together” repeated near the end of the track. anyway, another solid track from this musical mastermind.

velvet underground and nico

this weeks saturday throwback is “sunday morning”, the opening track of the classic sort of self titled album “the velvet underground & nico”, the album where the velvet underground collaborated with, you guessed it, nico! nico is basically one of those artsy women that every guy wants to date. singer, model, actress, artist. shes probably the femme fatale she sings about on this album. [aside: am i the only one that wishes the lyrics, "shes going to play you for a fool, yes its true," was something like "shes so cruel"? i guess its just me.] i need to find me one of those.

the number of velvet underground tracks up for posting today was literally in the single digits, so it was pretty tough to narrow down. but the velvet underground seems to be all around lately. at lollapalooza, bandleader lou reed performed, and wouldnt you know he played about a half hour over his allotted time. come on lou, i dont really care who you are, thats sort of a big festival no-no, and kind of a dick move when you know theres someone else scheduled to play right after you. i didnt witness said festival time slot desecration because i was seeing deerhunter, at which point lead singer bradford cox was simultaneously teasing and threatening to play several velvet underground tunes. he said he was going to play heroin, perhaps in reference to his emaciated appearance, but he did not.

the other place ive been hearing the velvet underground, or their tunes at least, is becks website. he started this new online project with a bunch of other peeps called “record club” where they all get together and without rehearsal or anything they record an entire album in one day. in this case, the album was “the velvet underground & nico”. then he posts a track a week on his website, complete with a cool black and white video of the recording session. pretty cool idea. and since he allows us to embed, im going to take advantage. so sort of two tracks today. becks version, followed by the original. i think i have my old roomate bobby to thank for introducing me to the velvet underground, but i cant thank him because hes been cooped up learning computer programming for the past month. true story. this ones for you bobby.

lollapalooza day 3

after a fun night out in wicker park and sleeping in a nice and air conditioned apartment, i was a little weary about getting to the festival at 1230 pm, knowing i would be in the hot sun for 8 or 9 hours that day, but thanks to nick dropping me off downtown, i was able to get there and be in place 3 or 4 people from the stage at about 1215 to meet up with karen, louis and nikki. even those first 15 minutes were completely unbearable but we sort of forgot about it once friendly fires started.

friendly fires – white diamonds

their show was an hour of non-stop beats, dancing, and even some electronic jams. i was expecting big things from their live show and got even more than i wanted. having never been to a 1230 show at lollapalooza, id have to imagine it was one of the best, highest energy 1230 shows out there, especially for such a hot day. even though nikki had to sit part of it out thanks to david guetta at soundstage the night before, and i almost passed out in the middle of it, im so glad i made it there in time. lead singer ed macfarlane was a total rock star. manning the dj equipment throughout the set, he danced and flailed all over the stage and even sang a whole song almost in the middle of the crowd in the open area leading to the soundbooth. and though it could have been cliche and cheesy, he totally pulled it off.

after the dancing in the heat almost did us all in before the day even began, we decided it was time to chill in the shade at perrys where we spent the next hour or two. i hoped to make it to the other side of the park to catch bat for lashes, but with the intense heat it just wasnt going to happen. i took a nice little nap under the trees during car stereo (wars) which was, as the name suggests, a mashup dj. some good stuff, and some not great, but it was still enjoyable. then i split off on my own and decided to post up at the citi stage for the better part of the rest of the day.

after eating another order of those delicious french fries (still cooked to perfection), i made my way up close for gang gang dance. i dont know much about them other than a few songs, and that their music is very out there and electronic and experimental, and as the weekend seemed to be all about electronic for me, i decided i wanted to check them out live.

when their show began, it was equally as weird as i thought it would be. they started out with about a 10 minute abstract drum/dj type thing that didnt really have a steady beat. i think they were trying to work out some technical difficulties throughout the first half of the set. when that was done, they went into the two songs i knew, house jam and vacuum, which were both great. the last half of the set was straight up dancing and the crowd was loving every minute of it.

this was one of my favorite shows from the weekend as well. lead singer liz bougatsos reminded me a bit of maryann from true blood. as the show progressed and she continued with her temptress dances, the clouds began to roll in. at times she started screaming out “let it rain! let the rain fall down!” to the incessant cheers of the crowd who, after sweating for hours, would have gladly welcomed a downpour, and im sure the crowd would have gone nuts if it actually rained at that moment, like it appeared it would. had she actually made it rain with her rain dance, it would have been the show of the weekend.

gang gang dance – house jam

once that ended, i posted up for passion pit. im still not sure if this was a good idea or an ill-conceived mistake. karen made it up to the front with me only to leave shortly after when she realized was a disaster it was going to be. the show was excellent but the crowd was awful. really, who crowd surfs to “little secrets” (posted below for reference)? the same drunk people kept going up over the crowd time and time again. and then there was the group of deerhunter fans loudly and obnoxiously cheering “A-T-L! A-T-L!” throughout the entire show (as well as the better part of the gang gang dance show). there were definitely some fun moments being up close in that crowd, but the bad outweighed the good and i didnt even attempt to take out my camera for this show.

passion pit – little secrets

the best part about sticking it out was that, finally, after many attempts, i was able to make it to the front row, right in the middle, hanging on the rail for deerhunter. the show began pretty uneventfully, but after a song or two, we learned that lead singer bradford cox was all hopped up on some b12 shot he got and that he thinks he has H1N1. he kept telling us that all he saw was a sea of faceless flesh, and he looked a few times like he was going to pass out. well, i think he always looks like hes about to pass out because of his insanely tall and lanky body, but thats another story. then he started referencing lou reed and snoop dogg (both playing at the same time as deerhunter) and even started playing a few tunes for 10 seconds at a time. outside of the entertaining weirdness of the commentary, the show rocked hard. it was tough to hear the vocals at times but i think it was just cuz i was right up there. “nothing ever happened”, one of my favorites of theirs, was especially great with a nice jam on the ending theme. i took a ton of pictures too.

so then it was time to head back across the park for some mstrkrft fun, and after another batch of delicious potstickers i was back at perrys. i decided i didnt want to see janes addiction or the killers and after a failed meetup attempt with ursula and karen heading to the killers, i closed out my festival alone at perrys with deadmau5 (which, much to my surprise, is pronounced deadmouse, and not deadmaufive). i made some new friends in the crowd and had a blast, and after running into nikki one more time, it was time to call it a weekend, but not before taking 2 last extremely blurry shots of perrys.

i dont really know how i made it back to nicks apartment that night without passing out/collapsing, much less showered and packed up to leave first thing in the morning to head up north. the 5 nights up north, however, proved to be just the relaxation and recovery period i needed.

quick tidbits about the weekend:
favorite shows – miike snow, friendly fires

biggest surprises – miike snow, gang gang dance

best area ever – perrys.

only people i didnt run into – little lauren and molly. somehow i ran into everyone else i knew that would be there without even trying.

favorite food – star of siam pot stickers and french fries from stand i cant remember. actually, i think thats the only food i ate on the festival grounds all weekend, minus the next item on the list.

best deal ever – the GIANT slice of watermelon for only $2

best idea ever – bringing my camelpak after not planning on bringing it, but then seeing the weather forecast for the weekend.

festival lessons learned: dont be afraid to branch out on your own, or youll likely miss many of the shows you want to see most. and you will always see less shows than you think you will.

tomorrow, back to our usual shtick. i hope youve enjoyed my recap and often bad/blurry pictures. one day ill get a nice camera (and, in my dreams, a press pass).
