Much has been said already about There is Love in You, the latest album from Kieren Hebdan, better known to us as Four Tet. And while I already talked a bit about “Sing”, one of the album’s standout tracks, I figured it might do some good to talk about another killer standout track on the album, “Circling”. This one definitely is not for everyone, but I dig it hardcore.
I don’t even know where to begin because there’s so much I love about this song. I think the biggest thing is that once the arpeggio melody comes in, it really sounds like nothing I’ve heard before. And there are some really funky time signature things going on too. Part of the song is chillin in 6/8, and part of the song is chillin in 4/4. And the main melody is 6 4/4 measures long, whereas typically songs are 4 measures long, so it kind of keeps you on your toes a little. Or we can choose to enjoy it for what it is, sans any music theory. And we will still like it.
What’s so great about Four Tet is that most of his tracks start out really simple and just add more and more throughout. There are so many little details to discover in just about every track.

I’ve been visiting The Sixty One quite a bit lately. For those of you who aren’t familiar (as I wasn’t until recently), it’s sort of like a combination of Pandora and any game where you have tasks to complete. It’s like Pandora because there is a ton of cool music that you’ve probably never heard. But it’s also sort of like a game, where you try to increase your ranking by finding new songs and completing tasks and whatnot. And I found a few tunes by Echodeck that I am kind of digging. My favorite thus far is “An Introduction”. It’s sort of glitchy (the good, intentional glitchy) and is just really cool and ambient and great to listen to. It reminds me a bit of Four Tet, and we know how I feel about him. I can’t really find out much about this fella though. His myspace profile tells us that he’s Paul Barrett from the UK. And his profile on The Sixty One just says “echodeck is completely fictional”. Good thing that this alleged fictional character left behind some good tunes. Kind of like those songs that were included in the hit period film “That Thing You Do”.
Echodeck – An Introduction

here we are, just into the first week of february, and i already feel completely inundated with new music. make no mistake, this is not a bad thing, but i am finding it a little difficult to keep up already, and its a little intimidating knowing how many more highly anticipated albums are coming our way very soon. im making a concerted effort this year to give everything new its fair share of listens before i form an opinion one way or the other, something i didnt do a great job of last year. but there are already a few albums that i find myself wanting to listen to over and over. the first of course is “teen dream” by beach house, whose lead single “norway” i posted about a while back and who i cannot WAIT to catch live in april. the second will be revealed tomorrow, and the third is “there is love in you” by four tet.
four tet is the electronic project of kieran hebden and i would describe hebdens music as soundscapes, which i kind of love. id casually heard about four tet quite a bit and am so very glad that i finally decided to check him out. make sure you have your headphones handy for this one, kids. upon first listen, “sing” was definitely one of the standout tracks for me. id sort of describe it as “sophisticated 16-bit electronic”. if this tune does anything for you, it would behoove you to check out the rest of the album. now that ive given four tet a shot, i cant wait to see what else hes got in store for me.
to make this song even more magical, i found out via facebook that j. alexander and i were listening to this album for the first time, at the same time. it was really a virtual “somewhere out there” moment.
