As you hopefully recall, last month, we put together our first ever mixtape entitled A Blogwave Summer which was curated by 20 of our favorite music blogs, each contributing a track of their own and mixed together by none other than myself. Well, I had so much fun putting that together that I decided to do it again with a bunch of tracks of my choosing. There wasn’t really a theme at the onset, it was just a lot of mostly high energy (and, for the most part, extremely bright) tracks that I love, most of which I hadn’t heard until I started this site last May. When I gave it a listen this past weekend on a 4-hour solo drive up to Traverse City, I decided it made pretty great driving music, especially on a sunny day, and thus, Summer Drive was born.

I could have also very well called this mix dailybeatz 101, because for someone who doesn’t visit the site regularly, it’s a fantastic representation of exactly the type of music that we love here. In fact, most of these songs have been posted on this site at one point or another, so you may have heard many of them here already, but I must say there’s something to be said for the way that juxtaposition can really change the feel of a song.

Special thanks to CrystalSister whose picture I used for the mixtape artwork.

Just like last time, you can right click/save as the zip file below which includes the mix split into individual tracks as well as front and back covers. Or, you can download the full mix from the soundcloud player below (this is what I recommend as you are sure not to encounter any split second gaps between tracks which really hurt the flow) and you can save the front and back artwork from this post. Either way, I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and please please PLEASE let me know what you think. I apologize for naming every mixtape “summer” something, but it’s what I love, and what the music sounds like for me. Check out the track list below.

Or listen and download one continuous file from the Soundcloud player below (what I recommend) by clicking on the down arrow on the right side of the player.

Here’s a sample track from the mix that’s become one of my favorites the last few days. It’s the beautiful, flowing “We Ah Wi” by Javelin, which sounds like a breezy summer afternoon.

Wondering what happened to day 2? Well, the truth is, I went jet skiing for the first time in a few years. Jet skiing on Lake St. Clair on a ridiculously nice Sunday afternoon. And on those choppy waters, jet skiing is extremely exhausting, more than I remembered. Although, we did jet ski up the Detroit river almost all the way to the music fest located just past it, so technically I did sort of make it to the fest that day. Anyway, let’s talk about day 3. I was, in a way, dreading day 3. Mostly because at the time I arrived, again around 7PM, the forecast was for rain/thunderstorms the remainder of the evening. Normally I would be all about it, but the fact that I had my nice camera and, more importantly, a rental lens that I did not feel like paying to replace, I wasn’t quite so thrilled to dance in the rain.

But as soon as I got there (conveniently meeting up with Jon without any trouble at all), the rain was all but forgotten about. We showed up just in time to catch the last half hour or so of Michael Mayer’s set just before Jas Shaw of Simian Mobile Disco took the waterlogged stage, equipment covered in white plastic bags. I guess I never knew what he looked like, but he definitely resembles a bleach blonde Matt Peabody. Don’t you think? Next up was Pretty Lights who I had seen at Coachella, but didn’t actually see on stage. So I was pretty surprised when I saw the drum set on stage. I know I’ve said it before, but one thing I really love is a DJ with a live drummer. Just adds so much to everything.

After about a half hour I figured I should probably just stroll around and check things out since I realized I’d spent almost my entire time at the fest at the Red Bull Stage. So I went and spent a few minutes at the other stages before meeting back up with Jon at the Vitamin Water Stage. We met under the giant “CANDY/CIGARETTES” sign, at which point we noted that this sign is probably responsible for adolescent smoking habits thanks to its subliminal juxtaposition of two words such as this. Then we made our way to the floor to check out Kenny Larkin, another total boss.

But the moment we’d both been waiting for were the closing German duo of Booka Shade. I’d been hearing about them for years. A few friends had seen them at 2008 Lollapalooza. A few friends had randomly seen them in Europe (true story, in multiple cases). But all agreed they were not to be missed and I had to agree. It was one of the most energetic acts of the weekend and the most fitting way to end the festival. It’s almost not fair how good they sound live. Check out some of my pics below. And again, you can find these and many more from throughout the weekend on our Flickr page. Also, I think the shoe shot has become my signature shot. It is pretty interesting to see what footwear all these artists wear, right?

The best part about this post is that in the process of looking up the perfect Booka Shade jam, I find an awesome remix by my boy Gui Boratto. It starts to get real juicy at about the 2 minute mark.

I know that I post a remix just about every day, but here are a few nice ones that have turned up in the old inbox recently.

The first is the Acid Washed remix of “Acapella” by Kelis, and it kind of feels like this is the way the song was meant to be heard. A track that was already made for the dance floor is only accentuated by this French duo. The beats are heavier and the fantastic chord progressions in that chorus are pumped up too. Good stuff. But I wouldn’t expect anything less from the French.

Up next, we have another track from the PEACE Compilation that I talked about here a few weeks back. This one is a remix of The Antlers’ “Two” by Buffetlibre. It’s an interesting take on a song that’s totally sad but still sounds sort of happy, namely because it sounds even happier in this remix. Since I love conflict, it works out quite well for me. And don’t forget to check out the PEACE Compilation, tons of songs from all over the world, yours with a contribution to Amnesty International.

It is no secret that I am infatuated with the music of Gui Boratto so I was pretty happy to see this one turn up. It’s a remix of “Estupendo” by Arsenal and I think it works really well with Gui’s subdued fantasticness.

And last but certainly not least, “Momma’s Place” by Roisin Murphy has been remixed by Beaumont. Murphy is one of those cats that I hear about over and over but I’ve never actually heard one of her tunes until now. When compared to the original, I like that this version is really much brighter (aka synthier).

This concludes our Thursday Remix Roundup.

top february tracks

hey y’all, first off let me thank our friend The Music Ninja for his help in cleaning up and organizing and coolifying our sidebar. My mind is much more at ease now that the chaos has subsided. Now, I thought it would be fun each month to just recap the top posts from the previous month. A “best of” of sorts, in case you haven’t been following along, so you can see what everyone else enjoyed so much the month before. I was able to determine this using a series of top-secret complicated algorithms that you probably wouldn’t understand anyway. You can listen to each track below or click to view the original post. Here’s the list!

1. Coeur de Pirate – Comme Des Enfants (Le Matos Andy Carmichael Remix)

2. Outkast – Spottieottiedopaliscious

3. Miike Snow – Billie Holiday

4. Massive Attack – Paradise Circus (Gui Boratto Remix)

5. Yeasayer – Love Me Girl

Pretty solid list. Maybe next month I can up the numbers a little for the past month’s top posts, since we now post even more stellar tunes for your listening pleasure. Here’s to a great March (even though it is almost halfway over).

brazils gui boratto released one of my favorite tracks of 2009, the ebbing and flowing “no turning back”. he does a great job of managing listener expectations. things always seem to start out a bit slower, so that you know right away not to expect an 8 minute banger. but then they unexpectedly build up, giving you that nice surprise in the middle that you didnt know you were hoping for, and then just as suddenly he backs off again.

the same is true of this remix of “paradise circus” off the latest massive attack album “heligoland”. althuogh it doesnt turn into as much of a dancer as some other boratto tracks, it definitely has its fair share of welcome highs and lows and becomes really unexpectedly beautiful in the last few minutes, all while maintaining the eerie integrity of the original song. i think mr boratto needs to come to the states some time soon.

in honor of the impending new years eve, the usual friday danceapalooza is taking place a little early this week. the idea is that you will have time to add one more awesome tune to your carefully planned NYE playlist. the track (thanks to mike for this one) is by gui boratto, a brazilian dj and producer whose website features some incredibly creepy album art. i pretty much seem to love anything a brazilian dj touches for some reason. gui also utilizes a monome, a jon alexander favorite. if you are into the unassuming start with the big buildup and many ups and downs, you will likely enjoy this track. youre just sitting there trying to figure out whats going on, wondering when something big is going to happen. and then you get to the 2:02 mark, and all holy heck breaks loose, temporarily. this is maybe my favorite kind of electronic song, full of peaks and valleys with an overall really happy sound. it gives you a chance to collect yourself and then shortly thereafter rock out again. i think it would be insane for fellow brazilians the twelves to remix this one and put their extra funky spin on it.
