im fully expecting some backlash at this post and may even lose some “street cred”, but im doing it anyway. the band is heart and while the lineup has changed several times, the constants were always ann and nancy wilson. while they got their start in the mid 70s with classic rock hits like “crazy on you” and “barracuda”, they re-emerged in the mid 80s with maybe one of the best power ballads of all times. in fact, it seems that with todays song plus other hits like “what about love”, that heart was really a pioneer of the oft-joked about power ballad. but at its heart (haha, get it!!!!!), its tough to deny that “these dreams”, which reached number 1 on the charts back in 1985 (their first number 1 hit), is a pretty good song, with its catchy chorus and the scratchy high notes of nancy wilson, who hadnt really sung lead vocals on a song until this point. incidentally, she had a little bit of a cold at the time of the recording which was responsible for the gruffness in her voice, but it kind of makes the song seem a little more real. nancy married cameron crowe and worked on scoring a few of his movies, my favorite of which is “vanilla sky”. i actually kind of love the little guitar melody that plays throughout the movie and was surprised when i found out who was responsible for it. so, say what you will, but i stand behind my endorsement of this tune. ive also included the video below, because you really dont get the full effect without the video
