Is it really November already? Based on the fact that my toes have been cold for a few days now, it’s safe to say that it’s here. But October was great for several reasons. Like the fact that we saw some of our favorite shows of the year (can you say Gorillaz, Blonde Redhead and Hot Chip?) and a whole slew of great new tunes. Here are your favorites from last month, and a nice list it is.

1. Hey Champ – Cold Dust Girl (Gemini Club Remix)

2. Kanye West ft. Bon Iver – Lost In The World

3. First Aid Kit – When I Grow Up (Fever Ray Cover)

4. Alexander – Truth

5. Daft Punk – Derezzed (NTEIBINT edit)

Boys and girls, just in time for your haunted Halloween extravaganzas, even though many of them probably took place last night, Hey Champ has released a brand new edit of a track of theirs (the name of which they won’t reveal) and have entitled it “Demon Semen”, which actually seems rather apt. It’s not only definitely got that spooky Halloween feel, but it’s also surprisingly appropriate for just about any Halloween dance party and is way more rockin’ than the tongue in cheek song name might imply. Good Halloween scheisse right here.

In what has become an increasingly common trend lately, Hey Champ and Gemini Club have given each other the remix treatment. I’m a big fan of this trend because I like that it shows the mutual respect the bands have for each other (whether or not it’s the bands or their management that arrange these remix exchanges). And plus, the end result is 2 remixes, and 2 remixes are (sometimes) better than 1. Today we’ll focus on Gemini Club’s great rework of the lead track from Hey Champ’s debut full length album Star. And what’s most awesome about this remix is that in and of itself it’s kinda like 2 remixes in one. You see, the track is just over 8 minutes long, pretty lengthy by normal standards. But in this case, the first half is a somewhat more typical remix which on its own would be worthy of its own post, but the best part is that it’s only the beginning. After about 4 and a half minutes, there’s a big drop and the remix really picks it up for a frenetic couple of minutes that seem difficult to even keep up with, all before returning back to some semblance of normalcy at which point I as the listener found myself almost out of breath. This breakdown is one for the books.

BONUS: After first composing this post, we were lucky enough to get the other side of this coin to share with all of you, it’s Hey Champ’s remix of Gemini Club’s “Ghost” and it’s got all the funky flavor you’ve come to expect from Hey Champ and their remixes. Dig it.

Happy birthday to us! It’s officially our one year birthday and we couldn’t be happier with how things have transpired over the last year, especially the past few months. While straining my brain trying to come up with the perfect way to celebrate, it came to me almost by accident. Since we’ve never done any sort of mixtape, we asked a bunch of our favorite blogs to each submit a track that reminds them of summer. Then, I mixed them all together (sort of, having never done any sort of audio editing in mah life) and the end result is the “Blogwave Summer” mixtape! It was an interesting project because everyone has a different definition of the perfect summer tune, but there’s a great mix of upbeat and chill that all flows together in the end. The mere fact that I was able to do this is a testament to how far we’ve come this past year , so I’m really happy with how it all came together. I mean it’s no Mondo Boys Weird Summer mixtape, but it holds its own. Oh, and thanks to j-town, whose FANTASTIC image I borrowed for the mixtape artwork.

Here’s the full track list, as well as which blog contributed which track in [brackets]. My eternal thanks to all of the blogs who participated, you are all super rad. And make sure to check them out too if you are not already a reader. Thanks to the ON (Original Ninja) The Music Ninja, you can click on any blog names in the image below to get to their respective sites, so do it! Oh yeah, and since this is our anniversary, I took the liberty to throw not one but two fantastic tracks into the mix.

I’ve provided the file in a couple of different ways. You can download it below as one continuous mp3 file, or you can download it as separate tracks (which will sound exactly the same as the single file when played in succession). You can also stream the whole thing right here in the audio player below if you want a sneak preview, but your best bet is probably to download the zip file. Plus the zip file includes a front and back cover which lists all the songs and blogs that contribute them, so that is nice to have. The whole thing runs at about 1:18, so press play and let the summer tunes take you away.

Thanks again to everyone for reading this past year, and let’s see if we can’t make the next year even better.

And here’s a bonus tune that I’ve posted before that JUST missed the cut for this mixtape, but that I listen to almost daily because it’s just SO farking happy. I’m sure it will only get even more play as the days get warmer. I also chose this song because, to quote Mr. Shooter McGavin, “Even though only one of you will become my colleague, all of you…are now my friends.”

Today we present to you a track that was discovered thanks to Norm, one of our loyal readers. He first informed me of the fantastic Hey Champ mixtape Winner’s Circle way back some time at the end of last year. And I immediately downlaoded it and then forgot about it, and recently rediscovered it when my friend Megan told me about Hey Champ, who she’d met at Princeton while in college. So I gave it a listen or 20, and it’s basically an hour of non-stop high energy fun. The best part is, the whole thing can be downloaded for free by going to this page on their website. We like free stuff.

And in an extremely timely bit of action, the band has released two of the tracks from their upcoming album as a free download. You can listen in the widget below or click to download.

Their remix of this track by French band Priors rocks my socks off. Hey Champ sped up the track a bit, added a great little riff throughout that sounds half synth and half string section, and did some pretty cool stuff with the vocals. Do you love this one as much as I do?

And since I dig this mixtape so very much, I’ve included another track below that I have a feeling you may enjoy. This ones got a little funkier quasi-disco feel to it, if you’re into that.
