June Most Popular Tracks

Can you believe it’s already July? More importantly, can you believe it’s already July and I just got my first tan (read:extreme sunburn)? It’s pretty embarrassing, but luckily June was a great month so we don’t feel THAT bad about it. We released the second of (hopefully) many mixtapes to come, the Summer Drive Mixtape (know it, live it, love it), and while it didnt have all the hype of the Blogwave Summer Mixtape, it definitely had all the energy and summer sizzle. And I got to see tons of acts I hadn’t seen before, many of which are on the precipice of hugeness. And now I present to you your favorite tracks from the month of June. And I think you all did a pretty good job of loving some awesome tracks the most.

Kelis – 4th of July (Fireworks)(Calvin Harris Remix)

I’m so glad I ran upon this awesome Calvin Harris remix of “4th of July (Fireworks)”, one of the standout tracks from the so good new Kelis album Flesh Tone. [Aside: isn't it awkward having all those parentheses right next to each other in this post title?] The first reason was because the remix is pretty ill, as in not healthy at all. And the second reason is because Kelis’ “22nd Century” made it into the first draft of my Summer Drive Mixtape, but after a few listens it just didn’t fit. So I’d been meaning to highlight her anyway on account of that. So not only do you get this awesome remix, but you also get to watch the video of the original version of the track, right here, right now. And you should watch the video too, because the original edit of this track ain’t too shabby if I do say so myself. The chopped up piano melody is tasty.

While this teeters on the brink of dirty electro without getting all the way there, it’s definitely heavier than what I’ve been posting lately, which is good for the soul.

Thursday Remix Roundup #2

It’s time for another remix roundup! Here are a few pretty neat remixes that we’ve liked recently when going through the ole inbox.

First up is Professor Purple, the name of Jeremy Malvin, a University of Michigan student (GO BLUE! [<-- yeah, that just happened]) who just decided to start making some remixes. And judging by how much we like his take on Crystal Castles’ “Celestica”, we think he should continue.

Up next, a remix that actually arrived in my text message inbox from our friend and contributor hockboi during a recent trip to Miami where he proposed to his longtime girlfriend (She said yes, we’re still not sure why). Congrats to them. I think this Calvin Harris remix of Passion Pit’s “The Reeling” probably came out last summer, but I’d never heard it before, and it’s been 80+ degrees all week (perfect for a jam like this), so it counts.

Up next, a remix that won me on subject title alone, but ended up being pretty enjoyable. You had me at “Sleigh Bells meets a fly ass mexican jew”. It turns out that it’s Speak, the self proclaimed 34th best rapper in the world rapping over the top of “Infinity Guitars” by Sleigh Bells. Unfortunately, the Sleigh Bells part of the song still sort of hurts my ears in “It hurts my ears but I kind of like it but kind of hate it because it hurts my ears” sort of way. And last but certainly not least, making her second appearance (out of 2) in the Thursday Remix Roundup is Kelis, whose “Acapella” has been mashed up/remixed/somethinged with “Tomorrow Never Knows”, one of my favorite songs by the Beatles evarrr, by London’s Plump DJs. I had a class about the 60s in college and we learned that this song was sort of revolutionary because nobody else had ever played a track backwards in a song before, or something like that.

Thursday Remix Roundup

I know that I post a remix just about every day, but here are a few nice ones that have turned up in the old inbox recently.

The first is the Acid Washed remix of “Acapella” by Kelis, and it kind of feels like this is the way the song was meant to be heard. A track that was already made for the dance floor is only accentuated by this French duo. The beats are heavier and the fantastic chord progressions in that chorus are pumped up too. Good stuff. But I wouldn’t expect anything less from the French.

Up next, we have another track from the PEACE Compilation that I talked about here a few weeks back. This one is a remix of The Antlers’ “Two” by Buffetlibre. It’s an interesting take on a song that’s totally sad but still sounds sort of happy, namely because it sounds even happier in this remix. Since I love conflict, it works out quite well for me. And don’t forget to check out the PEACE Compilation, tons of songs from all over the world, yours with a contribution to Amnesty International.

The Antlers – Two (Buffetlibre Remix)

It is no secret that I am infatuated with the music of Gui Boratto so I was pretty happy to see this one turn up. It’s a remix of “Estupendo” by Arsenal and I think it works really well with Gui’s subdued fantasticness.

And last but certainly not least, “Momma’s Place” by Roisin Murphy has been remixed by Beaumont. Murphy is one of those cats that I hear about over and over but I’ve never actually heard one of her tunes until now. When compared to the original, I like that this version is really much brighter (aka synthier).

the hood internet – decalogue

We all know that I love a nice mash-up as much as the next person. But it is rare that we hear a “concept mashup”, which is exactly what we’ve got ourselves today thanks to The Hood Internet. That is, each portion of the track is a mashup of two songs from each year of the past decade. Two songs from 2000, 2001, etc. See the full list of tracks by year below. I first heard this track last night thanks to James at Mediated Media and it was pretty much love at first site. I definitely smiled more than once when the song would break into the next year/mashup.
