can you believe it? dailybeatz.com is officially 2 weeks old. which, according to babycenter.com, means that in the coming week, we will be fussy all the time and cry for about 3 hours a day, lose the remains of our umbilical cord, and our moms will start experiencing postpartum depression. kind of a lot to look forward to this week! on a happier note, it also means that weve brought you 14 of the our favorite tracks of the moment with many more to come, and that maybe seven or eight of you actually visit the site on a daily basis and listen to them. and maybe one day, the soft spot on our head will go away, so you can drop us without fear of permanent damage. on this momentous occassion (namely that we started a project and didnt get bored of it within 15 minutes), we will be bringing you “while you wait for the others”, a track from the latest grizzly bear album, veckatimest. my original plan was to post “two weeks” today, for obvious reasons. but as i neared the end of the post i decided to switch it up.
my love affair with grizzly bear first began a few years back when i heard a few tracks from “yellow house” (yes people, i know im late to the show). knife became one of my favorite tunes along with the rest of the album. then i got to see them perform at last years lollapalooza. it was mid day 1, just when i questioned what i had gotten myself into, patiently waiting for radioheads set to begin a few hours later and not sure what to think of everything else going on around me. it was the perfect background music for sitting under the shade of the trees (damn day 1 was hot), eating a baked potato with sour cream, chives and bacon, hanging out with our new friend kisabi who was in town from lawrence, kansas who disappeared into the crowd moments later, never to be seen or heard from again. the joke was that we were going to tell someone that we met a girl from lawrence, kansas, and in their best “pee wees big adventure” impression, the person was going to inform us that nobodys lived in lawrence, kansas for fifty years! it was basically the moment when i realized how great of a weekend it was going to be.
this is for sure one of my favorite tracks from veckatimest. i think it sums up grizzly bears sound really well, even though its a more upbeat song and a lot of their tunes are less so. not to mention its catchy as F. definitely not their most abstract work, but much more complicated than it first seems. im looking forward to seeing them again this summer in support of their new album which seems to have a bit more of a hop in its step while still keeping with the grizzly bear sound. im pretty sure they played this track on conan a few weeks back too, so if youve heard it before, maybe thats where (sidenote: is anyone else terrified that conans is going to be forced to abandon his entire schtick for his new 1130 time slot? by the time you read this, we will already know…) or maybe you are cool because you have the album or heard the song through the grapevine. just kidding, listening to a certain band or type of music doesnt make you cool. being awesome makes you cool.
