royksopp live

im pretty excited about todays tune. i figured that lots of people might be reading today because many of us had a long weekend, and now we are back at work and searching for any distraction we can find. and i think this site, if not anything credible or entertaining, can at the very least be considered a distraction, no? so i figured this song might be a great distraction, and you might actually like it. the funny thing about this track is that i actually got the album a few months ago, listened to it once, really enjoyed it, and then completely forgot about it until about 2 weeks ago when i heard this song at grahams house as part of a j alexander mix and rediscovered it and boy am i glad i did.

the tune is “the girl and the robot” by norwegian dj duo royksopp. you may remember them from those geico caveman commercials a few years back. you know, the campaign where you enjoyed the first few commercials, then with each new commercial you hated it more and more. and then you heard that they were going to do a caveman tv show based on the commercials and really hated them. and then the show flopped, much to your chagrin. well, their song “remind me” was featured in one of those commercials, the one where the caveman is walking through an airport. while that is a great song, its very elevator music-y (in a good way though), and if thats your only exposure to this group, you will be very pleasantly surprised by their latest album “junior”. not only does it have block rockin beats, but it features some great scandinavian female vocalists such as my girl lykke li, karen dreijer andersson (aka fever ray and lead singer of the knife), and anneli drecker, another norwegian songstress who often tours with royksopp as their vocalist.

todays track features swedish sensation robyn on vocals and its kind of an awesome performance. damn gina, this girl has a great voice, especially for this genre. while you may remember her from pop hits such as “show me love” back in the day, she seems to have become pretty popular among the indie crowd after releasing some new material over the past few years as well in an interesting turn of events. this might be my favorite dance song of the year thus far. its especially enjoyable to enjoy the contrast when listening to the album between this song and the song that precedes it, the uber-fun opener “happy up here”.

tilly and the wall

one month in the books kids. as of today weve brought you exactly (actually a few more than) 30 totally awesome songs and plan on bringing you at least a few more over the coming days, weeks, years, centuries and millenia (right? not milleniums?). its sort of like making a mix tape every single week, except i dont have to worry about the songs fitting together in any sort of way. except if theres a theme week which there will be very very soon. then they will all fit together in some way. and that will be cohesive and good.

what is also exciting about today is that the lollapalooza schedule was released. im a bit disappointed in the schedule because out of the 6 headliners, i really only wanted to see two: kings of leon and depeche mode. and of course because i have no luck when it comes to festival scheduling, they are both playing at the same time on the first night. im definitely seeing depeche mode since i just saw kings of leon a few months back, but its still a little upsetting. other notable conflicts are fleet foxes vs crystal castles (crystal castles wins as i havent seen them), thievery corporation vs decemberists (likely gonna choose decemberists), lykke li vs tv on the radio, and silversun pickups vs mstrkrft vs band of horses. all in all not nearly as bad as bonnaroo conflicts.

today were going to bring you the quasi flamenco track “bad education” from nebraskan foot percussionists tilly and the wall. this was the first song id heard by them and instantly loved the foot stomping and clapping percussion and thought it fit well with the music of this song but i later found out that they dont even have a drummer and instead use tap dancer jamie pressnall for percussion. how cool is that? whats also interesting is that several of their members came from various conor oberst projects. and sorry bright eyes, but i think i like them just a little bit more. im kind of in love with the beat in this song and it would be sweet even if it was played on drums and not with metal bottomed shoes, but those make it even better.

today, were going to slow things down a little bit with some of the musical stylings of the ambiguously pronouncable lykke li. i originally thought it was pronounced “likely”, but now after hearing a few others say it, im pretty sure its more like “licky lee”, but i digress. besides loving her tunes, shes also kind of smokin hot. without knowing anything about her and conducting a quick image search, her semi-mod style might lead you to believe that she was a late 1960s femme fatale (does she remind anyone else a tiny bit of nico or is it just me?) but this swedish songstress is only in her early 20s. which means that theres still a chance for me, which rocks. i havent caught her live yet but will be seeing her at lollapalooza this year, hopefully from the front row, hopefully somehow tricking her into pulling me up on stage and making out with me in front of everyone. so far ive only figured out how to be in the front row, still working on the rest. if anyones done this before, id appreciate any suggestions. from what i hear, shes got a hip sway that rivals the best of them. her debut album was, i think, cowritten with bjorn yttling of peter bjorn and john, and im pretty sure that the little kids singing along on her song “breaking it up” are the exact same children singing along in pbjs “nothing to worry about”. if its not the same kids in both songs, they are at the very least second cousins.

how would i describe this song using only s words (ill take swords for $500, alex)? sultry, soulful, seductive, swedish, sexy. in fact, this song may be the sexiest song of 2008. i have to admit, most of the time im the kind of person who hears and pays attention to the music in songs first and foremost. its probably why i dont know the words to most songs, even the ones that everyone in the world ever knows the words to when they all sing along at the bar. but its pretty tough to listen to this song without getting all hot and bothered by the lyrics. she manages to seem completely naive and vulnerable, but in reality shes the one thats completely in control. not wanting to make the first move, but throwing herself at you. when she sings “and for you i keep my legs apart and forget about my tainted heart” in that soft swedish voice, its pretty tough not to be a little bit in love with her. if you still arent enamored, just check out any of her music videos.
