sunset rubdown

before we get into todays song, im posting a video that i was fortunate enough to discover yesterday. ive actually already posted this son during my post pitchfork moment of clarity when i realized the brilliance of m83. if you recall in that post, i talked about how this song got the whole crowd going halfway through the m83 set, and how the sun was just in the right spot to electrify all the colors on the stage. and now you get to see it for yourself. i have such vivid memories of this song so its cool to see a nice video of it, but this doesnt even do it any justice.

and here’s the track again just for good measure:

m83 – sitting

onto the REAL song of the day. for the next few days, im going to be bringing you what i call 6 minute epics. these are sort of the centerpieces of each respective album, at least in my opinion, and they are all pretty long songs, but the kind that dont feel like they are just going on and on. in this case, its “idiot heart” by sunset rubdown, one of the numerous wolf parade side projects. this one is led up by spencer krug, one of the most distinctive voices around. while 6 minute songs can sometimes be a bit tedious, this one is not because its constantly pushing forward. it starts calmly enough, but a few minutes in when krug croons “so look at you go”, you realize that its grown into an all out rocker. highly recommend their latest album “dragonslayer”.

sam sparro, in case you didnt know his name while seeing him live

so after a few days of straight up rock songs, lets go in a totally different direction. todays song is black and gold by sam sparro. hes had a pretty interesting go at things and has lived one of those international lifestyles that im so jealous of. even something like moving from detroit to chicago would seem like a huge deal for me, but then theres those people that have moved all over the world a bunch of times, and he seems to be one of them. but i guess its easier when youre a kid. he was born in australia, then moved to LA, then back to australia, then to the UK, then back to LA. kind of reminds me of a few international twin good friends of mine (one who happens to be abroad as we speak in fact!), doesnt it?

it was during sams latest stint in LA when he wrote todays song. it sounds like a love song sorta, but unlike most love songs, its pretty soulful and kind of a slow dancier. im sure there are about a million remixes of this song, but im not even interested in looking for them because i like this song so much just the way it is. im pretty sure this song came out some time last year (or maybe the year before) and im also pretty sure that i didnt like it the first few times i heard it, but definitely not the case now. make sure to wait for a few seconds because it doesnt actually begin until about 10 seconds in. and his little vocal improv before it slows down at the end sounds like the saxamaphone in “turn the page”. so listen for that. while todays song is definitely not nearly as heavy of a beat as the m83 song from last friday, ive been trying to do dance songs with a good beat to start the weekend out. hows it going so far?

m83 live at 2009 pitchfork festival

before we get to todays track by the stellar m83, its time to announce the winner of our sts9 giveaway! traffic was definitely way up yesterday. guess it goes to show that if you give it away for free, they will come. anyway, we got a pretty good amount of entries once i weeded out the duplicates. really people, if youre going to enter 4 times with 4 nondescript email addresses, either space them out so they are not sent all within 10 minutes, or at LEAST change the subject line or body of the email so they are not all exactly the same. you know who you are, but i still gave you one entry. i numbered each correct entry based on the order they were sent and then used a random number generator online to pick the winner. of course the answer was peaceblaster: the new orleans make it right remixes (but i also accepted peaceblaster as a correct answer). and the winner is……

jess cosentino!! surprisingly, so many people entered that somebody won that i actually didnt know. even though a lot of people i knew entered. so thats sweet.

congrats and hope you enjoy your new tunes and swag and thanks for checking out the site. hopefully we can do millions more giveaways in the future.

back to business. if you need a nice and rockin beat to carry you out of the work week and into the weekend, look no further, as todays track by french group m83 will do just that. i first heard “kim & jessie” months ago and wasnt quite sure what i thought of it. then i heard it again, and again, and it grew on me. then i heard a few other songs and got their “saturdays = youth” album and liked it a lot, but never investigated any of their back catalogue, nor did i know there was a back catalogue. i always considered them electronic, but never really considered them electronic dance, so when i was waiting to see them at pitchfork on sunday i didnt really quite know what to expect, so i was pleasantly surprised when they turned in what i considered to be the best performance of the weekend.

i think a few things contributed to this, besides my lack of expectation. it had been cloudy for most of the day but by the time their set began, there wasnt a cloud in the sky. as the sun was just beginning to set, it electrified the orange in the flaming lips backdrop and the blue of keyboard/vocalist morgan kibbys shirt (see above). then the show began and the songs took on a new life. by the time the group got mid-set and played “sitting”, todays song, the crowd had erupted into an all out dance party. the entire audience was completely into what the band was doing, and m83 was of the utmost sincerity when they showed their appreciation for the crowds continued support, and you could tell they were feeling the energy too. they were also among the loudest bands of the weekend and could be heard loud and clear even from the back of the park. its now 5 days after pitchfork fest, and this is the one show i cant stop thinking about. i wanted to do a week of french artists, but theyve been so top of mind all week that i couldnt hold out. cant WAIT to see these guys in a smaller venue.

flaming lips live

this is a pretty big week of firsts here at dailybeatz. first of all, i wrote a little article about the cost aspect of pitchfork fest which was posted on the windycitizen blog yesterday. this marks my first time writing an article about anything using proper punctuation and capitalization. we’ve also got our first ever interview coming up later this week. and finally, we’ve got our very first giveaway coming up even later in the week. phew, thats a lot to look forward to all in one week, dont you think? that being said, im exhausted, and im going to repost the contents of the story i wrote below, as well as a song by the flaming lips, who closed out the pitchfork festival last night with a bang. you can see the original article here in all its glory.

The Price of Pitchfork Fun

Friday night began my second year at the ever-eclectic Pitchfork Music Festival at Union Park in the great city of Chicago. While I’m still deciding if I prefer this weekend’s sub-70 degree temperatures to last year’s intense heat and humidity, I do know that Pitchfork Fest has remained one of the most affordable festivals, especially relative to the caliber of its acts. At just over $80 for a weekend pass, its among the most affordable 3-day music festivals out there. But what about the costs when you actually arrive at the festival? After spending ridiculous amounts of money at last year’s festival, I decided to provide a list of good deals and things to avoid to keep your wallet in check.

Let’s start out with the good. Perhaps the best value at Pitchfork is the food. While a typical meal will run you $6 or $7, the portions are generous and the options are abundant. I had a messy and delicious $7 pulled turkey sandwich from the Robinson’s cart and will be indulging in a $2 corn on the cob tomorrow. My friends got a huge portion of tempura shrimp and vegetables from the Star of Siam booth that was pretty tasty too. Regardless of what you’re in the mood for, there’s probably a food stand for you.

Another place to hit up for a potential deal is the Threadless.com booth, located just to the right of the entrance next to the baseball diamonds. They are offering a wheel of deals for whoever wants to spin. You can win anything from a button up to a $25 credit on threadless.com, and I believe at the end of the weekend they’re going to pick a winner who will win 200 free t-shirts.

the threadless.com wheel of deals.

If you’re looking for more wearable goods, check out the Broken Cherry stand. This Chicago boutique offers a wide selection of t-shirts for as low as $5 and $10 each. For a little extra, they will even make a custom shirt with the design of your choice. Last year there was also an InCase booth making custom stenciled spray paint t-shirts that were a big hit with the crowd, but I didn’t see them this year.

Now on to the ugly. The good news is, there really wasn’t much that was very ugly this year. While some of the wares in the vendor tent may seem a little overpriced to some, there weren’t many items that my friends and I purchased that we felt were a ripoff. The most notable change from last year was that the price of beer increased from $4 to $5. While this price increase may seem small, it definitely adds up over the course of the weekend when you’re with a group of 8. The $7 Sparks drinks also seemed a little overpriced. The ice cream cone we got was pretty good, but not for $5.

Perhaps the most costly part of our day was the valuable time we spent waiting in long bathroom lines today. Either there were many more attendees than last year, or far fewer bathrooms, or a combination of both, but if you were a victim of long bathroom lines today, here’s a little tip to save you time on Sunday. Try the port-o-lets between the main entrance and the Connector Stage, and go to the line all the way to the right. We never waited more than 10 minutes once we found that spot.

the venom energy girl!

All in all, our group was pretty happy with the selection of food and non-food vendors that were offered, and we were content with the prices for the most part. As we exited the festival grounds after a phenomenal set by The National, we got one last freebie: a large can of Venom energy drinks, thanks to the lovely lady pictured here (Sorry, I’m new to this whole reporting thing, and I really should have asked for your name, but hopefully you were able to find the article anyway). They came in very handy as mixers for our pre-bar festivities.

i hope you enjoyed my first foray into “journalism”. a few highlights from pitchfork friday and saturday include: running into my long lost friend angelina on the street in wicker park, yeasayer playing “sunrise” and the rains stopped and the sun came out for the first time all day, beirut being incredible live, and the national proving they were worthy headliners. on to todays song. i chose “ego tripping at the gates of hell” by the flaming lips. its one of my favorite flaming lips songs but i dont know why, i just like the way it sounds, so enjoy it. maybe ill update later telling you all whether or not they played this song during their performance if i am not too lazy. in other words dont count on it. [edit: they did not play this song. they did, however, utilize awesomely copious amounts of confetti and giant balloons. at one point, they blew up a giant confetti filled balloon with a leaf blower, the biggest balloon ive ever seen. i went to snap a pic and it exploded just before i took the picture, so i have a great pic of confetti in the shape of a giant balloon. but i wish the singer wouldnt have been such a chatty cathy and played a few more songs instead. and that they didnt play the yoshimi songs so slowly. but, m83 KILLED IT. i am obsessed with them now.]
