We love covers, obviously, but only when they are really well done. And while I haven’t really ever been huge fans of Dum Dum Girls (though they’ve always been preferred to Vivian Girls, who I often group together because they are both girl rock bands even though they’re way different, right Sarah Braunstein?), I have to say that their cover of “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” by The Smiths is pretty darn fantastic. I know I love it because it’s been stuck in my head for at least a week and I don’t even care. The up-tempo cover song is from their recently released 4-song EP He Gets Me High and it just may be enough to get me to want to listen to it. Besides the hazy guitars that permeate this cover and the refreshing take on such a classic jam, perhaps the most enjoyable parts of it are the vocals. Lead singer Dee Dee does her best Moz impression and while she doesn’t go full British, she does give it just enough in the most important places to keep it sounding ultra Smithsonian whenever she can (for example, double decker bus), and I appreciate that. This one is an early contendor for favorite covers of the year and as such, I shall now go listen to it over and over again. And then I’ll look at more pictures of Dum Dum Girls, because they’re all rocker babes.
Here’s a video of the original for comparison’s sake, but I think both versions hold up pretty well against each other (not that they have to). Ok, yeah.
