Our first glimpse at the retro electronic sounds of Com Truise aka Seth Haley was a few months back when we posted his remixes of Twin Shadow’s “Castles In The Snow” and Neon Indian’s “Sleep Paralysist”, but as it turns out, prior to that, Com Truise had released his very own EP last June entitled Cyanide Sisters. And now, our favorite independent label that just happens to be local, Ghostly International, has added Com Truise to their already stellar roster of experimental electronic artists and will be re-releasing a remastered version of the Cyanide Sisters EP, this time with 4 bonus tracks. And the best part is, you can sample the whole EP on Ghostly’s website right here and they’re giving away “Slow Peels” fo free. If drum machines, glitch and synth are your idea of a good time (as they clearly as for me), then you’ve come to the right place. Through his EP and remixes, Haley has demonstrated himself as not only a master at putting a modern spin on older sounds, but also that he’s extremely worthy of being added to the killer Ghostly lineup. Check out “Slow Peels” below and hear the rest of the EP on Ghostly’s site. And keep an eye out for his proper LP debut in the future.

We’ve been known in the past to enjoy the musical stylings of Anoraak in the past (check out his stunning remix of Neon Indian’s “Psychic Chasms” right over here if you missed it. Damn this is a killer remix), but today we will be flipping the script to highlight an Anoraak original getting the remix treatment from Manchester’s Jason Persad aka The Sanfernando Sound. The original version of “Crazy Eyes” is decidedly upbeat as it is, but with this remix, things get a little darker and a little heavier. But there are also a few surprises sprinkled in here and there, most noticeably the completely out of the blue piano break with its lush chords surrounded by heavy beats on either end. All in all, a pretty fantastic rework of a pretty fantastic track. Can we also talk about how cool/French Anoraak looks? Yeah.

The past month for me has been pretty much all Twin Shadow all the time. I got to see them live a few weeks ago, a truly unexpectedly epic experience that I’m glad to have witnessed with my own two eyes. And I listened to Forget pretty much non-stop leading up to the big show, which was definitely an enjoyable task to say the least. And now one of the quintessential tracks from the album gets remixed by New Jersey’s Com Truise, a fellow I had never heard of until a few weeks ago but whose name has appeared before me quite a few times in that span. He also recently remixed Neon Indian’s “Sleep Paralysist” not once, but twice. In the case of “Castles In The Snow”, what we lose in the super fast sometimes double-time beat that made this song such a standout we gain in sounds that are even more retro than the original. And while it’s tough for us to enjoy anything more than the original, we definitely do not hate this remix.

Another month in the books for us, and another great month it was. A few great shows by Foals and Klaxons closed out the month and got me warmed up for the live music madness that is to come in October and into November. Here are your favorite tunes from the past month. This month, Anoraak took the top spot on the non-existent charts with his Neon Indian remix, and with good reason. Good work on listening to good songs.

Alan Palomo’s Neon Indian has just digitally released a deluxe edition of the 2009 album Psychic Chasms and it is deluxe fo real, coming with a 9 song bonus remix disc entitled Mind Cntrl: Psychic Chasms Possessed. But if this Anoraak Remix of the title track is any indication, there is nothing possessed about it. In fact, it seems to be right up there among the more beautiful things I’ve heard recently. The original track, which I must admit is almost a bit difficult to listen to at times, has been given a complete makeover, one that is so much smoother and more pleasing than the original. Even if you have never been a fan of Neon Indian, I still think it would greatly behoove you to give this one a listen. You just might be surprised at just how nice it is.

So a brand new song by Neon Indian just broke on the twittersphere, and I must say, I am rather enjoying it. The tune was released as a free single from Green Label Sound which is the Mountain Dew backed record label that has put out some pretty cool stuff from some pretty cool artists. This tune was supposedly co-produced by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear. Have you heard of them? Well, he is the one that sort of looks a little bit like the oldest son from the hit TV shot “Home Improvement” starring fellow Michigan native/potential crazy person Tim Allen.

“Sleep Paralysist”, to me, sounds like a much more sophisticated side of Neon Indian. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have always been a big fan of Neon Indian, but to me it has always just sort of been this fun music with really in your face synthy wah-wahs (you know what I’m talking about here). But something is different in this song. It’s seemingly more sophisticated in ways. In fact, if you wouldn’t have told me that this tune was by Neon Indian, I probably never in a million years would have guessed. I love it. Please visit the good people at Green Label Sound as well.

washed out

before we begin, lets talk about how excited i am to see phish at cobo arena tonight. they havent played in michigan since 1999 and havent played in detroit since 1992 or something crazy like that. the show would be much more enjoyable if i wasnt going to be eating the 4 extra tickets that i was unable to practically give away, much less get the money back that i paid for them. disasterous.

anyway, todays tune is by washed out is the relatively new musical project of ernest greene, who now resides in jawja. his digital EP “life of leisure” was released a few months back and hes been all the rage around the interwebs. and just like the name implies, a lot of the music sounds a bit washed out, but i think thats what gives it its ear catching sound. greene says that hes been making music for a while, but that he just kind of whipped up these songs and recorded them in a month or two after moving back in with his parentals. his music is much in the same vein of neon indian, part of what is being called “glo-fi” or “no-fi”, among many other things, but i like the retro sound of these artists. “feel it all around” just makes you want to sit back and chill the f out. it kind of reminds me of something that could be played in an 80s teen drama, big hair and all, during one of those montages where it just shows a bunch of people sitting by themselves thinking about things. i think you know what im talking about.

alan palomo of neon indian

did anyone guess what the final non saturday throwback song of summer song week would be? i think there was really no other logical choice for tons of reasons, the most obvious being that my entire week has consisted of enjoying a deadbeat summer. i think its only fair since the weather has been so awful this year that it doesnt even really feel like weve had a summer at all. someone earlier in the week told me that this is the second coolest summer weve had on record where i live and i kind of believe them. but hopefully by now my skin has been fried to a nice golden brown because my ability to tan is one of my only good features, so it would really be a waste if i didnt get to utilize it this year.

the track of course is “deadbeat summer” by neon indian. im almost ashamed to admit that i didnt much care for this song until the fourth or fifth time that i heard it. normally im immediately drawn to anything involving summer. and im almost always drawn to lo-fi pop, so my resistance to liking this song is just getting curiouser and curiouser. but this is a total summer jam anyway, and hopefully we will be rockin it out this week at the cabin. i just did 2 minutes of research on neon indian and discovered that its a duo of musician alan palomo of vega and video artist alicia scardetta so hopefully there are some weird and wild music videos out there for all of us to watch. im looking forward to hearing the rest of the psychic chasms ep because the few tracks ive heard so far have been awesome, and because psychic chasms is an excellent name for anything. stay tuned tomorrow where we will have perhaps the best saturday throwback in the history of life.
