We all know that I love a nice mash-up as much as the next person. But it is rare that we hear a “concept mashup”, which is exactly what we’ve got ourselves today thanks to The Hood Internet. That is, each portion of the track is a mashup of two songs from each year of the past decade. Two songs from 2000, 2001, etc. See the full list of tracks by year below. I first heard this track last night thanks to James at Mediated Media and it was pretty much love at first site. I definitely smiled more than once when the song would break into the next year/mashup.
How many of these songs were you able to identify on your own?
2000 – Dr. Dre vs Radiohead
2001 – Missy Elliott vs Daft Punk
2002 – Ludacris vs The New Pornographers
2003 – Kelis vs The Rapture
2004 – Twista f/ Kanye West vs Arcade Fire
2005 – Three 6 Mafia vs Sufjan Stevens
2006 – T.I. vs Peter Bjorn and John
2007 – Rich Boy vs LCD Soundsystem
2008 – Lil Wayne vs Hot Chip
2009 – Jay Sean vs Phoenix
I think the strangest part for me is realizing that Idioteque is 10 years old. Holy Canoli!

PS. how awesome is this pic? I borrowed it from My Old Kentucky Blog and they are good.

since i kicked it down a notch last friday, ill kick it up two notches this friday. today features one of my favorite tracks from the most recent peter bjorn and john album “living thing”, entitled “it dont move me”. i just never could get into “nothing to worry about” with all the kids screaming in the beginning, but this song does really hits the spot. and how do you take a great song and make it even better? mix in one of my favorite new acts of the year, miike snow, to remix the song. not only is their album “animal” one of my favorites of the year, but theyve also put out two of my favorite remixes of the year, the other of course being their incredible vampire weekend remix, which im going to post again below because i like it just that much.
the remix for “it dont move me”, which i think tkop first told me about a few months back, is very different than the vampire weekend mix. its signature miike snow moments are not always as obvious in this one, but when they hit, they hit hard. and once you get to the breakdown in the third minute of the song, fuggedabatit. this remix is very reminiscent of a live miike snow song. get through the song and just when youve got the crowd, break into a multi-minute electronic jam.

today, were going to slow things down a little bit with some of the musical stylings of the ambiguously pronouncable lykke li. i originally thought it was pronounced “likely”, but now after hearing a few others say it, im pretty sure its more like “licky lee”, but i digress. besides loving her tunes, shes also kind of smokin hot. without knowing anything about her and conducting a quick image search, her semi-mod style might lead you to believe that she was a late 1960s femme fatale (does she remind anyone else a tiny bit of nico or is it just me?) but this swedish songstress is only in her early 20s. which means that theres still a chance for me, which rocks. i havent caught her live yet but will be seeing her at lollapalooza this year, hopefully from the front row, hopefully somehow tricking her into pulling me up on stage and making out with me in front of everyone. so far ive only figured out how to be in the front row, still working on the rest. if anyones done this before, id appreciate any suggestions. from what i hear, shes got a hip sway that rivals the best of them. her debut album was, i think, cowritten with bjorn yttling of peter bjorn and john, and im pretty sure that the little kids singing along on her song “breaking it up” are the exact same children singing along in pbjs “nothing to worry about”. if its not the same kids in both songs, they are at the very least second cousins.
how would i describe this song using only s words (ill take swords for $500, alex)? sultry, soulful, seductive, swedish, sexy. in fact, this song may be the sexiest song of 2008. i have to admit, most of the time im the kind of person who hears and pays attention to the music in songs first and foremost. its probably why i dont know the words to most songs, even the ones that everyone in the world ever knows the words to when they all sing along at the bar. but its pretty tough to listen to this song without getting all hot and bothered by the lyrics. she manages to seem completely naive and vulnerable, but in reality shes the one thats completely in control. not wanting to make the first move, but throwing herself at you. when she sings “and for you i keep my legs apart and forget about my tainted heart” in that soft swedish voice, its pretty tough not to be a little bit in love with her. if you still arent enamored, just check out any of her music videos.
