Phantogram – Mouthful of Diamonds (Alan Wilkis Remix)

I always like finding out that there’s a brand new Alan Wilkis making its rounds around the interwebs. And I like it even more when I find out that it’s a remix of one of my favorite up and coming acts, Phantogram. Even though I love the ethereal atmosphere of the original version of this track, I also really dig the pop spin that Wilkis has given this song. Sort of what this song would sound like had Phantogram been infused with a bit of The Cure (along with some hip hop samples here and there, of course). He’s taken a song that really pretty in an understated way and made it pretty happy. I kind of feel like both Phantogram and Wilkis can do no wrong at this point, so it’s almost as if this pairing was meant to be. Also meant to be is me and Sarah Barthel falling in love, because she is a total babe.

the antlers/phantogram @ the blind pig 4.23.10

Just two short days after I returned from maybe the best weekend ever at Coachella, I was lucky enough to attend a show at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor featuring an old favorite in The Antlers and an up and coming favorite in Phantogram. A double bill that I could really get excited about.

The last time I’d seen the Antlers was last fall at the Majestic Cafe with about 25 other people, so I was surprised to see the line all the way around the block. But, both bands have gained a lot of attention since then, and it was a Friday night, as opposed to the Tuesday show I’d seen a few months back. After seeing Mike, Natalia and Anna (who I embarrassingly didn’t recognize at first) in line and chatting with them a bit, we finally got in the door around 10PM, luckily before Phantogram began their set. Notice anything interesting about the sign on the window?

phantogram – as far as i can see

I, like so many others, have been enamored by Eyelid Movies, the debut album from Saratoga Springs small(ish) towners Phantogram, officially released last week. Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter have put together an album that’s a mish-mash of styles and genres, but one that sounds completely cohesive. After listening to the album, it makes perfect sense that the duo is now a part of the progressive Ghostly International label (based in my nearby college town of Ann Arbor, MI).

Upon first listen, the song that immediately jumped out to me was “As Far As I Can See”, which has a killer beat comprised almost entirely of samples that sound like they came from some Motown hit from times gone by, but that give the song a definitive hip-hop feel. This is quickly contrasted (and complimented) by Barthel’s soothing vocals. And I think that’s what’s so great about this album. All different styles all working together to form a cohesive sound. I’m looking forward to growing to love this album even more with additional listens. And to seeing Phantogram live at the end of my birthday week with The Antlers, another favorite of mine.
