I heard a song earlier today that reminded me of another song that I knew but couldn’t put my finger on, and it just hit me that this was the song I was thinking of. So, I guess you could say I’ve sort of had this song in my head all day without knowing it. I remember this song quite well when I saw Portishead at All Tomorrow’s Parties this year (see a bunch of my pics from that wonderful weekend right here), and I’ve just decided that learning this song on guitar (which shouldn’t be too difficult I hope but nice agility practice) will be my introduction into picking up my guitar for the first time in many months. When this song sort of picks up and the weird synth comes in, it’s just magical. Don’t miss out this lovely acoustic quasi-Radiohead cover of the track as well.

At first listen of “Weathered, Withering” from Deadwood Floats, my ears pricked up.  What a sweet tune with which to usher in summer.  The song reminds one of “For Emma” by Bon Iver, melodious vocals that hover over folk rock notes.  This OSU quartet mixes together magically to create a song that delivers you from your current state and leads you toward a more peaceful place.  And similar in style to Justin Vernon, Deadwood Floats has penned lyrics that reflect heart and thought.  So, please don’t let the word “folk” frighten because one spin of the song will immediately cure you of any concern …and end up on your iPod.

[Editor's note: As a U of M grad, I still like these kids even if they do go to that other school. But for real, check out a few of their great covers below as well, because they're great.]

You guys. Just wow. I’m not going to tell you much other than that this is a STUNNING cover of Radiohead’s “Pyramid Song” by Wolf Gang. It’s especially heartwarming for me after plugging away and learning all the piano chords to this song many moons ago when Amnesiac was first released. But seriously, Wolf Gang goes all next level beautiful on this song. The song always remains mostly just piano with some atmospheric effects, but the soulful harmonies that weave their way into this (especially in the second half) are ridiculous. Make sure to listen through because there’s a sort of false ending right before the really incredible parts. Good job to Radiohead for writing this awesome song, and good job to Wolf Gang for covering it in a most awesome fashion. The most goosebump-producing moment for me must be the ascending “ohh ohh ohh”s at the 3:50 mark.

This isn’t going to be an album review, I hope, but I feel I must at least acknowledge this. I kind of just want to make sure everyone listens to this. And don’t listen to it the way I did the first few times — sitting at work on an extremely busy day through iPod headphones having to start and stop multiple times as you have to leave your desk periodically. Listen to it how I’m listening to it right now — relaxing at home on a Saturday night when I’m willingly being lame, and through some really nice headphones. I think it could add greatly to the overall experience. Like right now, “Feral” is playing, and it is way more intense/crazy through these headphones, like for real. I already had a pretty good feel for the flow of the album (front-loaded with the less melodic, more schizophrenic tracks and ending with the slower, more glorious ones), but it really does sound remarkably different, and the attention to detail (as is usual with Radiohead) is impeccable in this case. Every song sounds like it’s coming at me from every direction. “Codex” might possibly be an early favorite among the bunch, with the lush and hazy horns, although the classic rock-sounding guitar noodling in “Separator” is pretty refreshing too. I’m not saying it’s really incredible or anything (yet), but the fact that I’m enjoying it so much at this moment when 6 days ago I didn’t even have any idea that it was coming is always a really good thing. It’s kind of weird for an album like this to be on soundcloud, so let’s make the best of it. Of course, as I’m sure you all know, you can buy the album at The King of Limbs website. And thanks to The Peak, whose soundcloud we included below.

Well ladies and gents, our friend Gigamesh, who you may remember from the classic hits Lykke Li – Little Bit (Gigamesh Remix) and Radiohead – Everything in its Right Place (Gigamesh Remix), among so many others, is in the process of making the move from Minneapolis to Miami, and what better way to commemorate such a huge life change than with a mixtape? And lucky for us, he’s offered up his Moving Cities mixtape to us to share with all of our loyal readers! It starts out a little playful (remember folks, this mixtape is all about moving out and moving on), but it doesn’t take long before it spirals into a funky, soulful, disco-infused party with an old school flavor that cannot be denied. And what’s even more, we even get a taste of “Back Again”, an unreleased Gigamesh track!

Give it a listen below, and if you dig it as much as I do, you can download it by clicking right here!

And here’s the full tracklist, just in case:

[Intro: So Long, Farewell]
Faze Action – Moving Cities
Midnight Magic – Beam Me Up (Jacques Renault Remix)
Gigamesh – Back Again [unreleased track]
Gigamesh – It’s So Intense
Jimmy Edgar – Hot, Raw, Sex
Midnight Star – Midas Touch (Bassapella)
Social Disco Club – Acid Town
Liquid Liquid – Optimo
Voltage – All Night (Azari & III Remix)
Marching Band – Another Day (Gigamesh Remix)
Estate – Dancing Time
MC Shy-D – Shake It (Gigamesh Edit)
Barry White – Change (Gigamesh Edit)

And if you still haven’t gotten your Gigamesh fix, check out this CLASSIXX remix he put together a while back. Pretty fantastic.

You know what’s so great about Cee-Lo Green? Besides his many musical projects where he creates such great original music, he uses that killer voice of his for all kinds of great cover tracks. I first remember hearing this phenomenon first hand at Lollapalooza 2008 as we walked away from the Gnarls Barkley performance to catch an act on the other side of the park, only to be serenaded by their great rendition of Radiohead’s “Reckoner”. Let me tell you, that voice projected across most of the park, and it was good. Check out the amateur video below.

While that song was exclusively live, the focus of our attention today is on a studio cover of the Band of Horses classic track “No One’s Gonna Love You”, off Cee-Lo’s upcoming album Lady Killer. He takes this track, originally more of a ballad, and gives it a much welcome electronic/dance twist (and is that a sort of dubstep beat I hear in there?). Cee-Lo could release a whole album of covers and I wouldn’t even mind.

Many of us were surprised and excited to learn a few weeks back that our favorite band in the history of the world (or at least that’s the way we seem to make it sound sometimes), Radiohead, is back in studio and almost finished with their next studio album. While we have no idea when we might be hearing anything from this album, we did get a little something to hold us over. Drummer Phil Selway has been working on an album of his own entitled Familial to be released August 30th/31st (depending on your country of origin) and he’s given away the opening track “Some Miracle” for free on his website. It’s a mostly acoustic sort of darker tune that makes me wonder if the whole album will be like this, or if it’s just the calm before the storm.

Give it a listen on the soundcloud player below and then go to his website and enter your email address to download.

In the meantime, here’s an excellent example of his drumming prowess in one of Radiohead’s slower jams with a more complicated time signature.

Another month in the books and another chance to look back at the most popular tracks from last month. And besides these great tracks below, last month was also the world premiere of our Blogwave Summer mixtape, with tracks contributed from 20 of our favorite blogs, so make sure to check it out if you haven’t already! And now, May’s most popular tracks:

Radiohead – Reckoner (The Twelves Remix)

Ellie Goulding – Guns and Horses (Monsieur Adi Remix)

Husky Rescue – Sound of Love (The Twelves Remix)

Villa Nah – Running On

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – Home (RAC Remix)

Cheers to a happy June. Based on the fact that the weather just in the month of May has been better than all of last summer, I’m thinking that shouldn’t be too difficult.
