Ah, missed opportunities. Like the one a few weeks back when School of Seven Bells (henceforth referred to as sviib) and Active Child were in town together at the Blind Pig, and I was on the other side of the country eating my life away (not that there’s anything wrong with that). This seemed to me like a pretty special bill to catch, but even though I didn’t get the chance, there’s still something to remember the tour by. You see, the group is releasing a split 7″ on October 26 via Lefse Records with sviib remixing Active Child, and vice versa. And we’ve been fortunate enough to get a sneak peek at Active Child’s remixing of sviib. Pat Grossi, Mr. Child himself, has taken the extremely upbeat “Heart Is Strange”, a song that sounds so much like what sviib is all about, and made it a tune that sounds so much like what Active Child is all about, complete with harps, dreamlike synth and a crazy different tempo. It’s just sounds intergalactic, but like in a really pretty and ethereal alternate universe.

I don’t exactly know what bedroom pop means. But this song should be called bedroom pop. Cuz it’s total bedroom music, if you catch my drift, wink wink, nudge nudge. I mean, the original version of this killer Active Child tune was already enough to drive a couple of kids (over 18 of course) straight into the bedroom. But then Classixx straight up mid 90s TLC R&B’ed it up and made it even more ripe for all kinds of innapropriate, but in a very nostalgic and appropriate way. This remix just oozes sexy time, and isn’t that what we all need on a Thursday afternoon such as this?

I’d been planning on the incredible double bill of School of Seven Bells and Active Child at the Blind Pig in a few weeks, but alas I will be out of town that weekend (a weekend in which I will also miss my chance to catch Of Montreal again and the incomporable Janelle Monae for the very first time just a few miles from my humble abode). But in the meantime, I will enjoy the music and be thankful that I will still see Ratatat in sunny San Diego with some rad playas that weekend.

school of seven bells live

ive been wanting to post a track by school of seven bells for quite some time now. the band is made up of twin sisters alejandra and claudia deheza and benjamin curtis of fellow indie band secret machines. their sound is really something unique. its part electronic, part tribal, and part what i think enya would sound like if enya were an indie rock act. but i shouldnt be surprised by their excellent and unique sound because they are signed to ghostly international, one of the coolest labels around, and not just because they are based in ann arbor, mi, my home away from home (which happens to only be about 40 minutes from my actual home).

when did i know that i loved ghostly international? last spring when the university of michigan museum of art had its grand reopening with a 24 hour extravaganza, ghostly international contributed with an hour of its favorite music videos. the first video they showed was “atlas” by battles. somewhere in the middle there was “deep sea diver” by grizzly bear. just a great song and video. i dont remember a lot of the other songs, but the final song was the gem below, which apparently is “poney part 1″ by vitalic. if youve ever wondered what computer generated dogs defying gravity with laser beams against an electronic track would look like, look no further.

as for todays song, like i said, it reminds me a lot of a modern day enya mixed with a bit of electronic. this whole “alpinisms” album is full of great songs like this, some much darker, and some much much more out there, and some not even remotely sounding anything like this one. but thats the beauty of the ghostly international label. a lot of the stuff is really experimental, and we know how i love experimental. ive heard through the grapevine that school of seven bells is a completely unreal live act and im looking forward to checking them out one day.
