Sleigh Bells and CSS. It’s almost as if they were meant to tour together. Two bands that I’ve only seen briefly at festivals. Two bands with overly energetic female vocalists. Both playing together at one of my favorite venues in town at the time of year where it was still a little to early for St. Andrew’s Hall to fully overheat (well, at least before the show started). Tonight was going to be a good show, and there was going to be a ton of energy spewed forth by everyone and everything in the building.

CSS, led by the ever charismatic Lovefoxx, hit the stage around 8:30 and gave the crowd their Brazilian flare full force. Having only seen them from afar at Coachella (where Lovefoxx crowd surfed at least 3 times that I counted), I wasn’t quite aware of just how much fun they were all having on stage until I got to see it up close. They brought it HARD, yet somehow some of the folks up front still found a way not to enjoy themselves (shame on you, people up front) even though the rest of us were soaking it all in. As Lovefoxx stripped down from pants and jacket to jorts and a red cutoff tshirt that said “TRASH” on it, her presence only grew and when the set ended, I only wanted them to come back out and play again. I only wish the crowd had given them a little more of what they deserved, but hopefully they’ll make a second appearance in Detroit as I believe this was their first ever. I mentioned to a friend of mine that if I was in a band, this is the type of band I’d want to be in. A band with bangin’ beats that you can tell are actually having a great time on stage instead of just going through the motions.

CSS – Move (Cut Copy Remix)

After a brief intermission in which just about all of the gear was cleared off stage minus a guitar and a few microphones, Sleigh Bells (aka Slay Bells) took the stage to “Iron Man”, a perfectly fitting entrance. And then it was all bets off. The lights flashed almost incomprehensibly throughout the set, a wonderful visual as a fan, but a dreadful one as a photographer, with Alexis Kraus doing her usual scream/sing combination and giving the crowd plenty of energy from which to feed. She climbed all over the stage and into the pit a few times (much to the delight of the 20 or so girls who had worked their way in front of the barricade, essentially trapping us photographers in the pit, not that I minded) eventually doing a brief crowd surf during the encore. Derek Miller’s level of madness could have matched that of Alexis were he not constrained by his guitar. The crowd was raucous as ever, even stealing the hat of one of the other photographers (not cool, crowd) but was otherwise very well behaved despite their outpouring of blood (more on that in a bit), sweat and emotion. I wasn’t particularly looking forward to the Sleigh Bells portion of the evening as I more wanted to see CSS, but they definitely won me over almost instantly.

After the show, Alexis hung out at the merch table signing autographs, taking pictures and chatting it up with the fans. I didn’t get a chance to take a picture with her, but I did get a chance to give her a high five before she made her way up to the defacto backstage area upstairs, but a high five was all I really wanted anyway.

As the crowd dispersed, it became clear that someone or something had been horribly injured, with two massive pools of blood on the venue floor and a trail of bloody footprints throughout, but nobody really knew who or what it was from. It was almost ridiculous to the point of us wondering if someone had brought some fake blood to play a joke. Later on, we saw the photographer again whose hat had been squandered from him, proudly wearing it atop his head. As it turns out, the young lady who stole his hat was also the one responsible for the blood, presumably the victim of a broken nose. While we hope she’s OK and wasn’t seriously hurt in the end, don’t steal people’s things, because karma is a bitch, y’all.

Day 3. Ah, day 3. You cruel temptress, with your best lineup ever when you know that I barely have the energy left to make it there in the first place. I knew day 3 would be a great and exhausting day, but I don’t think I really had any idea how right I would be. I think I caught a at least a little of every act save 3 or 4 that day and I have the pictures to prove it. Things I learned on day 3 (plus a whole boatload of pictures from day 3):

I like when two worlds that I enjoy collide in a way such as this. Bassnectar, who I have been fortunate enough to catch live 3 times now (well, one of those was from afar at Coachella, but it still counts) has remixed “Run the Heart” by America’s (read: the blogosphere’s) darlings of the moment Sleigh Bells. The track will be dropping on Bassnectar’s website some time today, but our good friend The Music Ninja used some of his ninja prowess to snag the world premiere last night. It’s a pretty short jam, so who knows if the actual release will be a little longer or part of something else? Either way, we love Bassnectar, and especially after just attending this year’s Movement Festival in beautiful downtown Detroit (I’m serious. I think you will be surprised at some of my pics of Detroit, particularly if you’ve never actually been there) where he played last year. I would love to shoot one of his shows again now that I know how to use my camera and Adobe Lightroom, unlike when I took the picture above last fall.

UPDATE: We’ve now got the final version posted below.

It’s time for another remix roundup! Here are a few pretty neat remixes that we’ve liked recently when going through the ole inbox.

First up is Professor Purple, the name of Jeremy Malvin, a University of Michigan student (GO BLUE! [<-- yeah, that just happened]) who just decided to start making some remixes. And judging by how much we like his take on Crystal Castles’ “Celestica”, we think he should continue.

Up next, a remix that actually arrived in my text message inbox from our friend and contributor hockboi during a recent trip to Miami where he proposed to his longtime girlfriend (She said yes, we’re still not sure why). Congrats to them. I think this Calvin Harris remix of Passion Pit’s “The Reeling” probably came out last summer, but I’d never heard it before, and it’s been 80+ degrees all week (perfect for a jam like this), so it counts.

Up next, a remix that won me on subject title alone, but ended up being pretty enjoyable. You had me at “Sleigh Bells meets a fly ass mexican jew”. It turns out that it’s Speak, the self proclaimed 34th best rapper in the world rapping over the top of “Infinity Guitars” by Sleigh Bells. Unfortunately, the Sleigh Bells part of the song still sort of hurts my ears in “It hurts my ears but I kind of like it but kind of hate it because it hurts my ears” sort of way. You can download a free EP from Speak right here.

And last but certainly not least, making her second appearance (out of 2) in the Thursday Remix Roundup is Kelis, whose “Acapella” has been mashed up/remixed/somethinged with “Tomorrow Never Knows”, one of my favorite songs by the Beatles evarrr, by London’s Plump DJs. I had a class about the 60s in college and we learned that this song was sort of revolutionary because nobody else had ever played a track backwards in a song before, or something like that.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this second installment of Thursday Remix Roundup. Til next time.

Well would you look at what we have here…one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year is also one of the VERY few albums that did not leak early this year. The Sleigh Bells duo of Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller are sort of the darlings of the indie music world right now, and I think I was so surprised by the high energy of “Tell ‘Em” that I don’t really know what to expect. So now that the album has been purchased, it’s time to buckle down and give it a listen. And since you all care so much what I think (sarcasm), I’m going to tell you how it goes, as it happens.

1. Tell ‘Em: Click here for my thoughts on this song. I like it. Like I said, it was really great/interesting to see how these new tunes compared to the demos, and I think the consensus is that they are going to be much bigger.

2. Kids: Sort of an electric guitar emergency alarm thing going on. Sounds a lot like it could be an M.I.A. song in some ways(which kind of makes sense since the album was put out on her label, or something like that). Distorted kids talking voices ring out. But certainly no lack of energy.

3. Riot Rhythm: More high energy! I like high energy. Wailing guitar riff finds its way in throughout the track. Didn’t really love it or hate it, but it was still fun on a Tuesday morning.

4. Infinity Guitars: An old familiar friend. I really like the contrast between the heavy guitars and yell-singing (I think that’s the official term) paired with the Krauss crooned “ah-ah-ah-ah”s. It still has that gritty sound of the demo, which I enjoy. In fact, does anyone know if they re-recorded the demo stuff? I also like the last 40 seconds a lot when it gets even bigger.

5. Run the Heart: Slower and more subdued start than anything else so far. Reallllly cool electronic effects at about 30 seconds in! I like how even the “slow songs” are super loud, but this is a welcome change after the craziness of the first few songs. “You took a heart, I can take out you.” This gal ain’t messin around.

6. Rachel: Another “slower” tune, which of course is all relative to the first 4 tracks. Still in your face though, and that’s never a bad thing. Apparently this song is about someone named Rachel, but I couldn’t understand any of the other lyrics, which is fine.

7. Rill Rill: Hecks yes!! A quick perusal of the playlist revealed no “Ring Ring”, but it’s just called “Rill Rill” now, and it’s so much prettier than the demo version (even though I lurve the demo version). Sounded like some sort of church bells in the beginning. Also the clearest song thus far (aka no distortion from things being too loud). This is definitely a major “demo to debut album re-recorded song” WIN. I LOVE the addition of the bells. So much.

8. Crown on the Ground: Wonder if this one will get changed up too? So far doesn’t sound noticeably different like that last one, but I am totally fine with that because I always liked this one anyway. Not much else to say, you’ve all heard/loved it already.

9. Straight A’s: Holy cow. Heavy metal what what? That was a nice little minute and a half that probably blows the roof off in a live setting.

10. A/B Machines: Believe it or not, I don’t think I ever heard this one before (and I think it was one of the demos?). Pretty much love it though. The whole “so loud its fuzzy” thing is starting to wear on me a little bit, but I am by no means suffering. I am curious how this would all sound without it though, because all I want to do is blast this music, and that’s kind of preventing me from doing it.

11. Treats: I liked the seamless transition from the last song to this one. The vocals have a bit of a Middle Eastern vibe to them (well, with the music, the heavy metal version of a Middle Eastern vibe). Shoutout to all my fellow Middle Easterners!

And just like that, it’s over. Like I said, this definitely packed the most energy of any recent albums I’ve heard. And like I also said, the loud to the point of distortion thing got a little old for me after a while (which is why it was do damn refreshing to hear “Rill Rill” right in the middle of it all, but major props to them for doing what they do. That being said, a great first release from the duo who has been hampered by expectation for so long now. It’s a great addition to my musical repertoire with summer right around the corner. If you like to try it before you buy it, you can listen to the whole album streaming now on NPR.

After my failed attempt to see Sleigh Bells at Coachella recently, I’ve been ever more excited about their Treats LP which is finally going to be released on May 11 (and has miraculously not leaked yet, at least as far as I know). The twosome of Daniel Miller and Alexis Krauss are quite possibly the biggest buzz band out there right now (and really have been ever since last year’s CMJ festival), but I will luckily get a second chance to catch them live at this year’s Pitchfork Festival. I hear their stage presence is off the heezy. Apparently the two met when Miller was waiting on Krauss and her mother and mentioned he was looking for a vocalist. Just goes to show you why I liked chatting it up when I waited tables back in the day.

We just got our first taste at what the album might sound like in the song “Tell ‘Em”, which is really surprising in a good way. But I think it’s mostly because we were all used to listening to the demos that have been floating around for oh so many months now (and we liked them in all of their stripped down glory). So I, for one, was surprised to hear a much more produced track from the band. If nothing else though, this gets me (and everyone else) so much more excited for the album. Have I mentioned it’s being released in a week and a half and hasn’t leaked yet? When was the last time that happened?

Sleigh Bells – Tell ‘Em

Here’s one of those demo tracks that we’ve been enjoying for so long. “Ring Ring”, even though it’s a bit more laid back than some of their other tunes, is one of those songs that sounds like a lazy, hazy summer day (a description I’m almost positive I’ve used before). Besides the chilled out tempo, the guitar strumming, sliding up a few notes at the end of each phrase, really adds to this sentiment. Juicy.
