I am a sucker for Motown. Maybe it’s because I’m a fool for my home town Detroit (well, just outside of Detroit, if you want to get technical), a city that is way more alive and vibrant than you would think by listening to anything you hear on TV. Sure, there are lots of places for improvement and it’s got its problems, but there really is so much to see and do, which I’m glad I’ve been able to realize these past few years. In one night downtown, you can hit up Tigers game, then head over to the Museum of Contemporary Art for a high school dance themed dance party (with booze of course), and then head over to Eastern Market for an erotic art show and then close out the night at Cadieux Cafe for some feather bowling. What’s not to love about that? But, despite all the doom and gloom you hear about on TV, nobody can ever take away the fact that Detroit is the home of Motown, and is there really anyone who doesn’t love Motown? I recently caught this FANTASTIC Stevie Wonder cover of the Beatles’ “We Can Work it Out” over at The Stu Reid Experiment and it was love at first listen. Head over to his site to hear Aretha Franklin and Al Green cover the Beatles as well.

Stevie Wonder – We Can Work it Out

stevie wonder back in the day

this weeks saturday throwback is by none other than the living legend stevie wonder. whenever i think of stevie wonder, i usually think of the episode of the cosby show when the crazy huxtable clan got into a car accident with stevie wonder’s limo, and since stevie wonder is such a great guy, he invites them to the studio to record a song made up of random words and noises. my favorite exchange is:
stevie (to theo): now what would you say at a party?
theo (without hesitation): jammin’ on the one.
i mean, what else would you say at a party, right? it must be a new york city thing. i should watch the cosby show more often.

there are a few things that are pretty noteworthy about this classic motown track. the first is that i never knew this was a stevie wonder song. i guess its pretty obvious when you listen to it, but i guess i dont really know who sings most motown songs unless i really think about it. the second and craziest part is that stevie was only 15 when he recorded this. FIFTEEN. are you kidding me? im not going to get into the specifics of how much more awesome stevie wonders life must have been at the age of 15 than mine was at the age of 15, but chances are there was a great disparity.

stevie wonder – uptight (everythings alright)
