I’m somewhat blown away by the bigness of this tune. It all began as I started another edition of Hypem Hunting (since it’s been almost a month since the last one, due to me not having time to do anything these days) and I chose the word “break” just because I thought it might turn up a bunch of results, and this was the first tune that caught my attention, right off the bat. And then it just kept growing and growing, to the point where I almost felt guilty burying it in a post with 3 or 4 other songs where it might get lost instead of giving it its own time in the spotlight. And that brings us to right now, as I find out that these wonderful shoegaze sounds (really big wonderful shoegaze sounds, I might add) are from Sweden’s Maria Lindén and Fredrik Balck aka I Break Horses and it’s the first of several singles that will lead up to a full length album later this year. While I’m not that surprised that a fantastic song is a product of a Scandinavian artist, this is not really a sound I associate with Scandinavian music. In fact, it gave me much of the same feelings that i got from “Beat The Happy Pavement” by Australia’s Tantrums, a song that doesn’t grow as much as this one but is still an equally interesting exercise in musical textures. You win again, Scandinavia….you always do.

And if you’re still not convinced, you should watch this stunning video directed by Alex Southam which is made up of some eye-catching time-lapsed videos of some pretty majestic landscapes.

Oh, hey there August. How quickly this summer is vanishing before our eyes. But, a good summer it has been. Besides my annual weeklong escape from reality with tons of friends, July brought us a fantastic Pitchfork Fest, one which I was lucky enough to be able to shoot, a daunting but exciting task to say the least. In case you missed them, check out our pics from the festival here and here. And we also got a chance to interview a few of our faves at the fest, Bear in Heaven and Here We Go Magic. On top of all of that, we brought you a boatload of fresh tunes. Here were your favorites from last month. Big things in store for August!

Tennishero – Midnight Love

Lissie – Pursuit of Happiness

Mix Chopin – Levitate

Tantrums – Beat the Happy Pavement

La Roux – Bulletproof (Glasnost Remix)

How bout some ambient Australian electronic tunes today? I recently caught this track by accident and at first thought it was kind of too abstract for me, but then it got really pretty. Really, really pretty. It’s from Tantrums which, much to my surprise, was actually made up of two chicas, Jade McInally and Sarah Phelan. It’s just that typically this sort of electronic music is made by men, so it was pretty cool/refreshing to see some ladies jumping into the game. You can get this and a ton of other tracks (whose weirdness or lack thereof I can’t speak to) on the New Weird Australia Volume 4 compilation. Could New Weird Australia be the Australian counterpart to Ann Arbor’s Ghostly International? Based solely on this song, I would say yes. Make sure you wait to get to the pretty parts if you are feeling a little adventurous.
