You know how there are some songs that you and your friends always play, but you aren’t really sure how they got to be that way? Well, for my group of friends and I, one of those songs just so happens to be the Hall and Oates classic “Private Eyes”. I think it’s because we enjoy the clapping, but I’m not sure. So imagine my excitement when I found out that another group that I love, The Bird and The Bee, was going to be releasing an entire album of Hall and Oates covers! The title is “Interpreting the Masters Vol. 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates” and is officially released March 23. Which makes me wonder if they’re going to be doing this some more and who else they’ll be covering. Their premise is that they are basically covering the songs straight up. They aren’t really going to be changing the arrangements or messing with what’s already there, which is perhaps why they’ve chosen to cover “The Masters” who would presumably already have the perfect arrangements. This cover of “Private Eyes” is pretty spot on if you ask me and totally sounds old school. And the voice of Inara George is the perfect compliment to these classic 80s arrangements. The group actually played all the covers live last Friday and streamed the performance on the web but I just found this out. I’m sure you can probably find it online somewhere if you search a bit.
With this upcoming album release, the inclusion of Daryl Hall as part of the Bonnaroo lineup performing with Chromeo, and an online petition to bring Hall and Oates to the 2010 Movement festival in Detroit, it’s possible that Hall and Oates could be having the Best Year Ever.
