Here’s a pretty fantastic instrumental track from CIVIL CIVIC and Bad Panda Records, a record label that sends out free tracks at least once a week, usually bordering on the more experimental side of things, that just celebrated their one year anniversary. CIVIL CIVIC is an Aussie duo now living in London made up of one bass player, one guitar player, and a box of drum noises. Another group that seems like they would put on one heck of a live show. I do feel like I need to disclaim a bit that when you’re listening to “Lights on a Leash” and feeling a little bit like it may not really be going anywhere, you should probably just keep listening because the song does build and grow into something pretty cool. It also has a pretty cool 80s feeling to it that definitely reminded me of The Cure’s “A Forest”, and that can’t really ever be considered a bad thing. 2010 was definitely the year that I became unafraid of songs without words in them, and if you are still afraid of songs without words, you should probably give them a chance.

My life the past week has been surrounded by Crystal Castles greatness. First off, I come to find out that the Canadian duo whose 2009 Lollapalooza set nearly put me out of commission would be coming to Detroit, and even better to the Royal Oak Music Theatre, the closest venue ever to my house. And even though the show is not until March 2011, there is still plenty to be excited about. Remember when their album came out and I posted my favorite track upon the first listen, “Not In Love”? Well, the song has just gotten even more incredible than it was before with the addition of the man, the myth, the legend, none other than Robert Smith. You may remember him from The Cure, or any TV show or movie that ever referenced Robert Smith’s hair. Why is this song so awesome? Well, first off, it has Robert Smith in it. Second, it’s Crystal Castles, and third, for maybe the first time ever, I can actually understand the lyrics in a Crystal Castles song, and it turns out that they’re not even half bad! This track is from a single being released some time that’s not today.

this saturday throwback is almost too easy. a layup, if you will. except for the fact that my short stature has prevented me from playing and/or not sucking at basketball, so even a layup was never really a layup for me. vertical challenges aside, im not even gonna talk about this one, because if you dont already like this song (or depeche mode for that matter), i dont think we can be friends. and while youve surely all heard and loved this song, i will offer up a bonus that you may not have heard before. its an excellent, quiet and minimalistic cover by tori amos from her 2001 album “strange little girls”, a concept album of sorts full of covers of songs about women. its not my favorite, but there are definitely some great great moments, like this song, the cover of “new age” by velvet underground, “rattlesnakes” by lloyd cole and “real men” by joe jackson (and not on the album, but look for a live cover of the cures “lovesong”). i kind of forgot that i liked her a lot back in the day, so im looking forward to listening to a few albums as a result of this rediscovery. its definitely got a lot less going on, but i think the stripped down version really highlights what a well-written song this is.

this post is bringing back fond memories of seeing depeche mode this summer at lollapalooza. i want it to be summer again.

one word of advice. if you ever happen to find yourself on a karaoke stage with me singing this song, do not sing it an octave higher, or you will face my wrath.
