Happy Wednesday, y’all, from the Florence, Kentucky water tower. The good news is that by lunchtime, you will have officially made it halfway through the work week, that much closer to the sweet redemption of life brought forth by the weekend. The bad news is that at lunchtime you’ll still have 50% of the week to go, but with each passing moment, that percentage gets lower and lower until you find yourself at the wonder that is the Friday evening exit from the office, without a care in the world until Sunday night when you start thinking about it all happening again. But just in case I accidentally pointed out the sad reality of life, let me try to lift your spirits just a touch with the 16th edition of everyone’s favorite music blog aggregator search engine music discovery game, Hypem Hunting, where I search for a random word on The Hype Machine and find a bunch of songs I’ve never heard and share them with all of you. This week, per usual, we turned to the twitter for inspiriation and @WGMeets offered up the word “How”, which I believe is the first question word we’ve used. So here’s what we found.

The first song we clicked “play” on was a winner and that’s always a good sign. It’s a remix by Cambridge producer Pedestrian and it’s some silky smooth two-step and overall just pretty great. He doesn’t have to resort to anything too crazy to pull off this spacey sound. Check out some more of his work over on his soundcloud.

Up next is a tune that you’ve all probably heard by now, but I still hadn’t given it a listen, perhaps because I was afraid of the awful sound quality that I was promised, but more likely just because I was kind of mad that The Rapture waited until a few weeks after “the rapture” to get a new tune out on the web after everyone was joking about it back then. They should have just surprised us all and gotten it out there that day. Anyway, listen to this poor quality recording of their newest jam “How Deep Is Your Love?”, a pretty great track off their upcoming album In The Grace Of Your Love along with a pretty cool video (well, pretty cool considering that you’re just watching a record play).

Now let’s move on to everyone’s favorite musician/public figure/being ever, R. Kelly. Tom Kwell, aka How To Dress Well (sort of one of those love or hate kind of acts) covered Sir Kelly’s classic “I Wish” and it’s super minimal and really nice on the ears. Makes you remember that R. Kelly is/was pretty great before he turned all R. Kelly, which I guess could argue made him even better in many ways.

We’re gonna keep things turned down a little bit to finish it out this week. It seems to have been a while since we posted a proper “awesome older tune” but I think this one fits the bill. That’s because it’s Al Green (yes, the same Al Green that I saw live at Bonnaroo a few years ago) covering Willie Nelson’s “Funny How Time Slips Away”. If you can’t get into this, you are either un-American, or a pedophile, or both. This is just some classic scheisse up in here.

So, that’s all we’ve got this week. And may the second half of your week be exponentially better than the first.

We all know that I love a nice mash-up as much as the next person. But it is rare that we hear a “concept mashup”, which is exactly what we’ve got ourselves today thanks to The Hood Internet. That is, each portion of the track is a mashup of two songs from each year of the past decade. Two songs from 2000, 2001, etc. See the full list of tracks by year below. I first heard this track last night thanks to James at Mediated Media and it was pretty much love at first site. I definitely smiled more than once when the song would break into the next year/mashup.

How many of these songs were you able to identify on your own?

2000 – Dr. Dre vs Radiohead
2001 – Missy Elliott vs Daft Punk
2002 – Ludacris vs The New Pornographers
2003 – Kelis vs The Rapture
2004 – Twista f/ Kanye West vs Arcade Fire
2005 – Three 6 Mafia vs Sufjan Stevens
2006 – T.I. vs Peter Bjorn and John
2007 – Rich Boy vs LCD Soundsystem
2008 – Lil Wayne vs Hot Chip
2009 – Jay Sean vs Phoenix

I think the strangest part for me is realizing that Idioteque is 10 years old. Holy Canoli!

PS. how awesome is this pic? I borrowed it from My Old Kentucky Blog and they are good.
