Ever since I first heard “Humdrum Town”, I had a feeling Theophilus London was gonna blow up. Over the past 12 months or so since then (maybe a bit less?), I’ve followed him on the twitter and seen his stock rise via tweets of grandeur and thought to myself, I think you were right about this one. I’m rarely right about anything, but I just knew that his no nonsense approach to everything combined with a flavor for the old school flavor were a winning combination. And now his second official single makes its debut with a side of Dev (not to be confused with @d_e_v) and Solange Knowles (you just today got a twitter shout out from Bestyycoastyy herself) and the world waits in anticipation for his debut album, being released some time in the future after today. And the world is left to wonder, when is he going to have his big moment? A moment big enough that he would embark on a tour large enough that he would be forced to come here to Detroit. St. Andrews Hall is basically begging to host a Theophilus London show in the Motor City. I’ve asked him approx. 5 times on twitter when he’s doing a show here and he never responds. Probably just waiting for the perfect moment.

Listen to the track below and then offer up your email address in exchange for a download.

As you hopefully recall, last month, we put together our first ever mixtape entitled A Blogwave Summer which was curated by 20 of our favorite music blogs, each contributing a track of their own and mixed together by none other than myself. Well, I had so much fun putting that together that I decided to do it again with a bunch of tracks of my choosing. There wasn’t really a theme at the onset, it was just a lot of mostly high energy (and, for the most part, extremely bright) tracks that I love, most of which I hadn’t heard until I started this site last May. When I gave it a listen this past weekend on a 4-hour solo drive up to Traverse City, I decided it made pretty great driving music, especially on a sunny day, and thus, Summer Drive was born.

I could have also very well called this mix dailybeatz 101, because for someone who doesn’t visit the site regularly, it’s a fantastic representation of exactly the type of music that we love here. In fact, most of these songs have been posted on this site at one point or another, so you may have heard many of them here already, but I must say there’s something to be said for the way that juxtaposition can really change the feel of a song.

Special thanks to CrystalSister whose picture I used for the mixtape artwork.

Just like last time, you can right click/save as the zip file below which includes the mix split into individual tracks as well as front and back covers. Or, you can download the full mix from the soundcloud player below (this is what I recommend as you are sure not to encounter any split second gaps between tracks which really hurt the flow) and you can save the front and back artwork from this post. Either way, I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and please please PLEASE let me know what you think. I apologize for naming every mixtape “summer” something, but it’s what I love, and what the music sounds like for me. Check out the track list below.

Or listen and download one continuous file from the Soundcloud player below (what I recommend) by clicking on the down arrow on the right side of the player.

Here’s a sample track from the mix that’s become one of my favorites the last few days. It’s the beautiful, flowing “We Ah Wi” by Javelin, which sounds like a breezy summer afternoon.

It’s been a while since we last talked about Theophilus London but just today he dropped his new mixtape entitled “I Want You”. And I just finished listening to it for the first time. And I gotta say, it’s HOT. I think he covers just about every style imaginable in these 19 tracks, so there is definitely something for everyone. There are lots of great samples throughout, the most unexpected being, in my opinion, Jack Penate. Others I can remember off the top of my head were a FANTASTIC Ellie Goulding “Starry Eyed” remix (which sort of has a disco vibe going on and which goes directly into a great 80s sound in the subsequent track), Discovery, Vampire Weekend, and oh so many more. And in case you missed it in the title, this bad boy is FREE. Just go to the Theophilus London blog and download the zip file. I was a fan of Mr. London before I listened to this, but he just jumped up a few more notches with this great display of versatility. And for your listening pleasure, here’s that remix I mentioned above, but it would really behoove all of you to listen to the whole mixtape. I’m not exactly sure what to name this track, so I’m just going to call it exactly what its called on the album.

In today’s tough economic times, you can’t really afford not to download this free mixtape. It’s definitely great bang for the buck, even if there were a charge.

just as the world is becoming increasingly globalized with the blending of cultures and the differences between cultures becoming less and less apparent, the same thing is beginning to happen with music, and a great example of that is this song by brooklyns theophilus london. this guy is another one of those artists whos been building up some momentum and one that many believe could have a breakout year in 2010.

in “humdrum town”, london combines elements of hip hop, pop, and electronic all into one catchy and danceable tune that almost cant be labeled with a genre. but we feel theres enough of a hip hop flavor to qualify for inclusion in our first ever hip hop week. and its nice to hear something thats different from all the radio crap out there with lyrics that are a bit more substantial than, as one blog commenter noted, “look how big this chain is on my dick”. if you like this track, its available as a free download from green label sound, which is a label backed by mountain dew to support independent artists.

how are we doing thus far as we are now halfway through hip hop week? do you like whats happening? do we not have a clue what we are talking about? let us know y’all.
