Of all the untimely celebrity deaths that have occurred over the last decade, the one that struck me perhaps the most was that of rising R&B star Aaliyah. I don’t know if it was the fact that I was just starting to really enjoy her music or the fact that she was on the verge of becoming a megastar or the fact that she had talent, brains and beauty (despite some R. Kelly controversy), but I found myself thinking about it quite a bit for the weeks following the tragic plane crash. And I guess it didn’t help that she was raised in my hometown of Detroit (and by hometown, I mean a suburb of, just in case any haters want to get technical). Which brings us to today. Arguably one of her biggest hits, “Are You That Somebody?” was the song that I think really started getting her some attention from the masses, with it’s crying baby sample and simple Timbaland beats. And The Gossip (many years ago) put out a pretty great cover of this track, which I only just heard today for the first time. Beth Ditto’s larger than life voice is pretty perfect for a low key version of this classic Aaliyah hit.
