this saturday throwback is almost too easy. a layup, if you will. except for the fact that my short stature has prevented me from playing and/or not sucking at basketball, so even a layup was never really a layup for me. vertical challenges aside, im not even gonna talk about this one, because if you dont already like this song (or depeche mode for that matter), i dont think we can be friends. and while youve surely all heard and loved this song, i will offer up a bonus that you may not have heard before. its an excellent, quiet and minimalistic cover by tori amos from her 2001 album “strange little girls”, a concept album of sorts full of covers of songs about women. its not my favorite, but there are definitely some great great moments, like this song, the cover of “new age” by velvet underground, “rattlesnakes” by lloyd cole and “real men” by joe jackson (and not on the album, but look for a live cover of the cures “lovesong”). i kind of forgot that i liked her a lot back in the day, so im looking forward to listening to a few albums as a result of this rediscovery. its definitely got a lot less going on, but i think the stripped down version really highlights what a well-written song this is.

this post is bringing back fond memories of seeing depeche mode this summer at lollapalooza. i want it to be summer again.

one word of advice. if you ever happen to find yourself on a karaoke stage with me singing this song, do not sing it an octave higher, or you will face my wrath.

owen pallett aka final fantasy

in the next of a series of older songs that youve probably heard before, we will be featuring toronto native owen pallett, better known to the music world by his solo project name, final fantasy. i didnt really know much about final fantasy other than hearing a song hear or there but we saw him perform from a distance at this years pitchfork festival. hes got one of those great live shows where its just one guy on stage utilizing a few instruments and a loop pedal (a la andrew bird), but lemme tell ya those loop pedals are not easy to navigate. check out the video below of pallett performing during a big rainstorm despite the stage crew trying to get him to quit if you need any more proof that pallett is a heck of a performer. just wait til about 2:30 in when the violin kicks in. and then about :30 later when the rain really starts coming down.

some people were complaining after his pitchfork performance because he played almost all brand new songs that nobody had heard before, but he said that he was tired of playing the old songs over and over again, so more power to him. one of those older songs is “this lamb sells condos” from the strangely titled album “he poos clouds”. yeah, thats the real name of the album. im pretty sure this is the first song i heard by final fantasy and i kind of love all the piano in this song. is that a harpsichord i hear? i havent heard one of those since the tori amos album “boys for pele”. how medieval.
