So the internet has been abuzz over the new tUnE-yArDs (that is rather annoying to type out over and over) album w h o k i l l. I haven’t listened to it yet, so I don’t have an opinion either way, but I do like the old stuff from the Merrill Garbus led musical endeavor. And I have heard “Bizness” many times now and I dig it. She’s coming to town in a few weeks and it’s pretty much a must-see event in my opinion. So then today I saw this video (probably weeks/years after everyone else did) and I thought it was pretty much the perfect visual accompaniment to this song. From the choreographed school kids to the crazy color tribe of Garbus et al., this video perfectly captures the spirit of the song, there’s no other way to put it. I also think that if you weren’t too fond of this song before, it might make a bit more sense after watching the video, if for nothing else than you will realize how big and energetic it is. So, watch it now.

Oh yeah, and the album was officially released on my birthday a few days back, so bonus points for that.

Tune-yards (which I guess is technically written as tUnE-yArDs) is the solo project of New England’s Merrill Garbus. She recorded the whole album with a voice recorder and mixed it using some sort of downloadable shareware. Oh yeah, and she played every instrument on the album. The recording process definitely gives her tunes a raw sound, sometimes a little too raw, but it still works for me.

This song imparticular is considered to be the album standout and I think it’s because it highlights the versatility and power of Garbus’ voice. In the beginning, she starts out timid and falsetto. But as the song progresses, you notice that each time the chorus of “I could be the sunlight in your eyes, couldn’t I? Couldn’t I?” is repeated, its a little louder and more powerful than the time before. If you can get past the production quality (which I definitely can), this is a great little Thursday ditty.
