The other night, I was DJing in the Covers Only room on turntable.fm and someone posted this beauty of a cover from back in the day. Pretty sure it’s all a capella, which I’m sure my little sister will be excited about, but in any event, it’s a great quasi-barbershop quartet take on this normally upbeat Pixies tune. Pretty excited to see TV on the Radio next week, finally, after several failed attempts.

TV on the Radio – Mr. Grieves (Pixies cover)

If you’ve ever heard anything from TV On The Radio, it’s probably been their giant in your face anthem “Wolf Like Me” (well, I guess either that or “Staring at the Sun”). It’s a high energy 4 minutes and 37 seconds that almost never gives up and adds a nice touch to any dance party playlist, mostly because everyone loves to dance to this song. Sadly as you have probably heard by now, a few weeks ago, TVOTR’s bassist Gerard Smith passed away after a battle with lung cancer. While I don’t know much about the band’s relationships with each other, on the surface at least they’ve always seemed like a really tight knit group, so I can’t imagine how tough this must be for them to be going through right now. In tribute to Gerard, Lera Lynn has recorded a folk/acoustic version of their flagship tune “Wolf Like Me” which you can check out below. As I’ve experienced in the past when a big tune like that gets the acoustic treatment, it always makes it very apparent just how great these songs are at their core when they are stripped down to their most basic states. RIP Gerard, and thanks to Lera Lynn for this great tribute. We just so happen to love it when people take crazy rock songs and give them an acoustic/folky twist.

fucked up - do they know its christmas

in the spirit of the season, a holiday-inspired charity track that you should purchase if you enjoy it. this should really be called “fucked up featuring everyone ever – do they know its christmas”, and by everyone ever, i mean tegan and sara, GZA, kyp malone (of tv on the radio), andrew w.k., ezra koenig (of vampire weekend), yo la tengo, bob mould, kevin drew and even david cross. and they are singing the famous band-aid track from so many moons ago, and all for good causes: justice for missing and murdered indigenous women, DTES power of women group, and sisters in spirit. even though the original track is pretty americacentric (or i guess more specifically christian-centric), it doesnt mean its not a memorable track that got a pretty nice facelift.

it stays pretty true to the original, but still gives you those warm fuzzies inside when you hear it, and a few more when you picture all those great artists in a room, standing 3 around a mic, on 2 or 3 steps so that theyre all on different levels. and then the camera shot changing to close ups of whichever set of 3 happens to be singing at that time. you may also remember the star-studded mockery of this scenario on 30rock, with the season ending “he needs a kidney”. its nice to see that a hardcore punk band can still have a heart. especially since they reportedly spent most of the prize money from their polaris prize putting this bad boy together. so happy holidays to all, and to all a good night.

picture of perrys, stolen from ursula

unfortunately, i dont really have many pictures and/or memories from day 2, just because it was so stinkin hot and miserable. but lets go ahead and see what we can remember, but be prepared for a slightly less robust recap than yesterday. i think the saddest part of my pictures from the weekend is that i forgot to take pictures of me and my friends for the most part.

i arrived at the festival at around 1 45 pm, which is the earliest ive ever gotten there, making for an extra long day. i headed straight to the vitaminwater stage to meet up with karen and to check out miike snow. as the lead singer told us all, “miike snow is a band, not a person. and we’re keeping two i’s in our name, because its too late to change it”. id only heard a miike snow remix that i posted here a while back and am obsessed with and was curious to see what their own stuff was like. needless to say, i was EXTREMELY impressed. excellent melodies mixed with rockin beats in an electronic wonderland. it was so fun that we almost didnt notice it was 90 degrees with high humidity and became what i think may have been my favorite show of the weekend.

ive listened to their self-titled album probably 15 times in the last few days (literally listened to it on repeat the entire day at work yesterday) and am loving it, and know it will be growing on me even more in the coming days. i remembered hearing a mishmash of electronicness when i was walking up to the stage and after hearing the album i THINK what i was hearing was the track below, starting at the 3:20 mark. great album, great band, great performers.

miike snow – in search of main

after that, we ran into caitlin and alex, and alex inquired about writing some sort of column for dailybeatz similar to peter griffins “what really grinds my gears”. im still waiting to hear back from her on that, but the offer has been extended. then we went to the eyeball tower aka the flag tower aka the best and easiest meeting place on the grounds to meet up with ursula and crew. after exchanging a sweaty hug, i met allison, her brother james and his friends and we all headed to perrys to see the animal collective dj set, and on the way i ran into peabs for the first time (of many). despite how hot it was, we were excited to dance, but sadly the animal collective dj set was so mellow we didnt even know that it began and was not very condusive to dancing, so we all decided to go back to the other side of the park to catch some of gomez.

however, 10 minutes in, the sun was beginning to get the best of us. we decided shade was in order and split up. on my way out, i ran into amy, who i run into everywhere. then i luckily ran into karen and louis again after a bathroom stop and we decided it was time for a nap in the shade. we went to the nice shaded area of the bmi stage and took a nap under the trees while listening to blind pilot, who reminded me of a more bluegrassy fleet foxes, but i was sleeping so i guess i dont really remember. i just know it was great resting music.

we met back up with ursula, james and crew at perrys and were going to see hercules and love affair, but when we realized it was a dj set, we decided to see santigold instead. as we we waited for 20 minutes or so for the set to start, the effects of the heat were apparent. the six of us couldnt even muster up the energy to have any sort of conversation, and we all acknowledged that we were completely ok with that. santigolds set began and we all got a little more pep in our step, but about a half hour in i had to leave the crowd to use the restroom.

this is where i encountered the most persistent clusterfuck of the festival, and when i returned there was no way i was getting back in the crowd (although i did run into amy again twice in the next half hour, which was weird). i decided to get some potstickers (chicken and vegetable dumplings) from star of siam and they were phenomenal. tv on the radio was up next and i spent half the set trying to find anyone, and by the time i did we were so far back that it wasnt even enjoyable. i dont know why i am cursed never to enjoy a tv on the radio show, but im sure i will one of these days.

after that, karen louis and i headed to catch diplo at perrys and it was a blast. the sun was finally starting to disappear and we knew that the worst was over (for that day at least) and danced away until it was time to head back to the budweiser stage for the newly announced headliners, yeah yeah yeahs. and i think this is when i ran into shaf and agatha.

crazy fun for diplo at lollapalooza

im a big fan of yeah yeah yeahs, but i guess i didnt expect much out of their live show for whatever reason, so i was pleasantly surprised when it was rockin with heavy beats that i wasnt expecting. karen o, in her ever infinite wardrobe of weirdness, came out wearing a full headdress and covered in feathers. below is an awful picture of the feathery mass that was karen o. for some reason, their set was almost impossible to get a clear picture of, at least from where we were standing.

yeah yeah yeahs at lollapalooza

she stripped that off after a few songs and was left wearing some sort of flower covered material that looked to be wrapped like a diaper. the show was completely above anything i expected and worthy of a headlining spot, but after a little while we decided we all wanted to see what bassnectar was all about back at perrys.

yeah yeah yeahs – heads will roll

bassnectar was exceptional. the sun had finally set, and the awesome visuals of perrys were now in full effect. like i said before, the perrys area this year was pretty much out of control all the time and usually had something great going on and this was a great way to end the night.

bassnectar at lollapalooza

with 20 minutes or so left before the shows ended, we decided we should check out tool, just to say we did it. we marched across to the other side of the park again, and once we arrived, we all decided that we didnt want to be there at all, so we left. we stopped on the way out for some food and got the most perfectly cooked french fries we have ever had. crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. we ate them as we walked back to the red line, which we were able to get on immediately despite it already being full of white sox fans, and headed home. i was able to convince the guys to go to wicker park with me to meet up with allison and ursula and we hit up a few bars and had a great, late night. the effects of the weekend were quickly catching up with me and i crashed, knowing that i had to wake up at some point to let nick and mark into the apartment, and knowing that i had to be at the festival by 1230, impossibly early for a festival for me, to see friendly fires the following day, and boy am i glad that i did.

tilly and the wall

one month in the books kids. as of today weve brought you exactly (actually a few more than) 30 totally awesome songs and plan on bringing you at least a few more over the coming days, weeks, years, centuries and millenia (right? not milleniums?). its sort of like making a mix tape every single week, except i dont have to worry about the songs fitting together in any sort of way. except if theres a theme week which there will be very very soon. then they will all fit together in some way. and that will be cohesive and good.

what is also exciting about today is that the lollapalooza schedule was released. im a bit disappointed in the schedule because out of the 6 headliners, i really only wanted to see two: kings of leon and depeche mode. and of course because i have no luck when it comes to festival scheduling, they are both playing at the same time on the first night. im definitely seeing depeche mode since i just saw kings of leon a few months back, but its still a little upsetting. other notable conflicts are fleet foxes vs crystal castles (crystal castles wins as i havent seen them), thievery corporation vs decemberists (likely gonna choose decemberists), lykke li vs tv on the radio, and silversun pickups vs mstrkrft vs band of horses. all in all not nearly as bad as bonnaroo conflicts.

today were going to bring you the quasi flamenco track “bad education” from nebraskan foot percussionists tilly and the wall. this was the first song id heard by them and instantly loved the foot stomping and clapping percussion and thought it fit well with the music of this song but i later found out that they dont even have a drummer and instead use tap dancer jamie pressnall for percussion. how cool is that? whats also interesting is that several of their members came from various conor oberst projects. and sorry bright eyes, but i think i like them just a little bit more. im kind of in love with the beat in this song and it would be sweet even if it was played on drums and not with metal bottomed shoes, but those make it even better.

tv on the radio

in honor of me receiving my ticket to bonaroo today (im kind of confused since nobody was home today when they dropped it off, but im not asking any questions), i decided to write about tv on the radio, one of the bands im most excited to see at the fest in a few weeks. and by a few weeks i mean less than 2(!!!!). thats partially because i was supposed to see them 2 or 3 summers ago at st andrews, and out of the millions of shows ive gone to, theyve been only 1 of 3.5 shows that have gotten cancelled. the other two, coincidentally, were both paul oakenfold. one time his bus allegedly got stuck in some sort of snow storm, so at about 1 am they finally told us he wasnt gonna show up. the second time, we got there and found out he was at the venue, but sick in his tour bus (the infamous night when julie got her hair curled at clutch cargos). the .5 is when cut copy was supposed to close out pitchfork fest last year and their flight got delayed or something like that. by the time they got to the fest and set up, they only played 4 songs before they had to stop because of the curfew. so i think that counts as a half, because i dont feel like i saw them live, even though i technically did.

anyway, some other reasons im pumped to see tv on the radio live: 1. they are totally sweet. 2. their last album, dear science, is totally sweet. 3. the lead singer, whose name i didnt know (its kyp malone), but who i know is also the lead singer of iran, has awesome crazy hair and an awesomer beard. 4. redemption. i think those are all of the main reasons. its also kind of my destiny this time because, in general, every band i really want to see at bonnaroo this year is scheduled to play at the same time as another band i really want to see. all, except tv on the radio. ironically, paul oakenfold is also playing bonnaroo, and is only up against girl talk, who is always fun, but who ive seen many times already. so double (techincally triple) redemption is to be had in just a few short days.

anyway again (i really need to work on those segueways), im not sure why i like todays song so much. i like the weird chord changes in the chorus, the beat changes, and the way that the chorus is different every time, but it still usually rhymes with a lot of the previous lines. i know that didnt really rhyme, but give me credit for trying to find a third rhyming word for at least a minute before i gave up. you know how sometimes you hear an opening track to an album, and you think it sets up the whole remainder of the album perfectly? thats this one for me. and you and everyone we know.
