top february tracks

hey y’all, first off let me thank our friend The Music Ninja for his help in cleaning up and organizing and coolifying our sidebar. My mind is much more at ease now that the chaos has subsided. Now, I thought it would be fun each month to just recap the top posts from the previous month. A “best of” of sorts, in case you haven’t been following along, so you can see what everyone else enjoyed so much the month before. I was able to determine this using a series of top-secret complicated algorithms that you probably wouldn’t understand anyway. You can listen to each track below or click to view the original post. Here’s the list!

1. Coeur de Pirate – Comme Des Enfants (Le Matos Andy Carmichael Remix)

2. Outkast – Spottieottiedopaliscious

3. Miike Snow – Billie Holiday

4. Massive Attack – Paradise Circus (Gui Boratto Remix)

5. Yeasayer – Love Me Girl

Pretty solid list. Maybe next month I can up the numbers a little for the past month’s top posts, since we now post even more stellar tunes for your listening pleasure. Here’s to a great March (even though it is almost halfway over).

Though Brooklyn’s Bear in Heaven has been around since 2003, it was just last year that they made their biggest splash with their album “Beast Rest Forth Mouth”. Since I’m usually way behind the game, I just finally picked up this album a few weeks back and have given it a few listens and am really liking what I’m hearing. I’ve been struggling with how to describe the sound of the album, but I think I’m comfortable in saying that it reminds me a little bit of the subtle electronic future and/or outer space, but not in an over the top way.

I think the song that best exemplifies this is “Casual Goodbye”, the closing track of the 10-song album. The track starts out with some shooting stars that always makes me think of Yeasayer’s “Wait for the Summer” and continues with a sort of constant ambient undercurrent running through the rest of the track underneath Jon Philpot’s soothing vocals. The interesting chord changes throughout add to the quasi-futuristic flavor that this song gives me. There’s something really great about moving up a half step in a chord change, which happens about a million times in this one. If you’re a fan of this website, you will probably be a fan of this album.

Another Sunday bonus, this time in honor of what the kids these day call “Singles Awareness Day”. I originally thought the perfect song to post would have been Queen’s timeless “Somebody to Love” but I got scared that the record people would come after me. Instead, you will be treated to another pretty excellent love-themed track by Yeasayer, whose “Odd Blood” was finally released this past week. The track is entitled “Love Me Girl” and it’s just completely funky and really indescribable in a great way. I really hope I get to see these guys at Coachella and at a show of their own, possibly in Toronto. And hopefully take pictures of them and have a chat if I was really lucky.

the time has come. i know the anticipation has been unbearable, and i apologize for that. i was originally going to post this on monday but i was so excited i just couldnt wait. my basic criteria for my top albums are based on how much i listened to that album on repeat after i heard it for the first time. because isnt that really the best sign of how much you like an album? i was going to do a best songs of 2009 list too, but i post my favorite songs every day. i felt guilty narrowing down to 10 (and frankly couldnt pick) so ive bumped it up to the top 20, along with a track from each album (which may or may not have been posted here before).

20. the handsome furs – face control

handsome furs - face controli dont reckon this album made many year end lists, but the completely raw sound (both musically and vocally)just stuck with me and kept bringing me back for more.  and after seeing this two piece live this summer, i know that i want to listen to their music and to party with them. just a fun album.

handsome furs – all we want baby is everything

buy this album on Handsome Furs - Face Control or amazon

19. jack penate – everything is new

everything is newto be perfectly honest, this album really didnt do much for me at first. then i was lucky enough to catch mr. penate live on a whim while i was in chicago earlier this year and i got to witness how fun and exciting his music can be first hand. then i found out my friend amber waited on him earlier that day, and i realized it was meant to be and the album went into heavy rotation shortly after.

jack penate – tonights today

buy this album on Jack Peñate - Everything Is New (Bonus Track Version) or amazon

18. bat for lashes – two suns

bat for lashes - two sunsthe ever lovely natasha khans second album has really shown her moving forward since the release of the great “fur and gold” a few years back. this time, the songs are bigger and harder hitting. and its no surprise since she spent a bit of time in new york with dailybeatz favorite yeasayer working on beats. and for the second time, she even nabbed a mercury prize nod. we hope to see lots more of her in the future.

bat for lashes – daniel

buy this album on Bat for Lashes - Two Suns or amazon

17. here we go magic – here we go magic

here we go magichere we go magic is actually the third musical outing by luke temple, who previously released music under his actual name. i feel as though this album is best listened to on a lazy hazy summer afternoon. the intentional low production quality (allegedly recorded on a 4 track) actually adds to the album in this case. its almost as if we are listening in on some sort of practice session. a practice session which can get pretty ambient at times but more often than not is pretty neat.

here we go magic – ahab

buy this album on Here We Go Magic - Here We Go Magic or amazon

16. dirty projectors – bitte orca

bitte orcaits almost become uncool or cliche to like this album after how much buzz it got when its released, but since i am uncool, i am not afraid to add it to my top 1720(this originally somehow ended up as the top 17 list, but the OCD in me was uncomfortable with that number so i bumped it up to 20) of 2009 list. theres just something about the way that voices are used as instruments here that i love. and great voices they are.

dirty projectors – useful chamber

buy this album on Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca or amazon

15. faunts – feel.love.thinking.of.

faunts - feel.love.thinking.ofspecial thanks to mr peabs for informing me of this one month ago. i think the best way to describe this album is to steal from amazon reviewer mark roberts who says, “like m83s ‘saturdays=youth’, its a gorgeous and non-ironic homage to 80s music, without seeming any way dated.” i couldnt have said it better myself mark. hopefully this albums release date early in the year wont have thrown it off the radar of too many year end lists.

faunts – it hurts me all the time

buy this album on Faunts - Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. or amazon

14. the xx – xx

the xx - xxah yes, everyones favorite early twenties london minimalist rock band, the xx. i was really late in listening to this album (as i am with most everything) but from even the first track i knew i was going to like this one. its amazing how much emotion can be put forth with such little sound at all. and the voices of oliver sim and romy madley croft just work perfectly together.  not to mention the fact that they put out one of the biggest remixes of the year.

the xx – islands

buy this album on The XX - XX (Bonus Track Version) or amazon

13. dark was the night

dark was the nightyeah, thats right, a compilation has made its way into my best albums of the year list. why? mostly because it was basically a whos who of the indie world at that point in the year and there were tons of great tracks that came from that album. and its for a good cause taboot! and is there even any doubt as to which track youre going to hear from it?

yeasayer – tightrope

buy this album on Ben Gibbard & Feist - Dark Was the Night or amazon

12. yeah yeah yeahs – its blitz

yeah yeah yeahs - its blitzkaren o and crew did it again, this time the tunes were bigger, brighter, and just made you want to dance. the album came out just as the warm weather was starting to take shape, and it became an essential summer album. with a big festival repertoire this year, including an impressive last minute lollapalooza headlining gig, the band solidified their place among todays great rock acts.

yeah yeah yeahs – zero

buy this album on Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! or amazon

11. royksopp – junior

royksopp - juniorafter just one listen to this album i knew it was right up my alley, especially since my tastes have turned so much to anything that can be danced too. even the title of the opening track, “happy up here”, was a great indication of what youd be getting from this one, fun energy. a great pump-you-up record with one of my top 5 songs of the year.

royksopp – the girl and the robot

buy this album on Röyksopp - Junior or amazon

10. memory tapes – seek magic

memory tapes - seek magicthis was one of the latest additions to my music collection, and i reckon that if i had a little more time to spend with it, it may have inched up even higher. the dreamy sounds laid over a nice beat just take you to another place. i think this is one of those albums where the album art perfectly fits the music. cant wait to see what weird and or memory tapes and or cassette bring us next.

memory tapes – stop talking

buy this album on Memory Tapes - Seek Magic or amazon

9. animal collective – merriweather post pavilion

animal collective - merriweather post pavilionyeah, you knew it was coming eventually. my love affair began when i finally got a studio version of “my girls”, the track i fell in love with when i heard it live almost a year earlier. and the rest of the album kept me coming back for more. im really not going to repeat everything anyones said about this album because we would be here all day, but this is a must have for any music fan. bonus points for most psychedelic album art. just find a large version of the album cover and get back to me.

animal collective – bluish

buy this album on Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion or amazon

8. fever ray – fever ray

fever ray - fever raythe first time i listened to this album it was early on a sunday morning driving through the (at the time) desolate streets of detroit. this scenario was so fitting with the album that karin dreijer andersson eventually turned it (well, something like it) into a music video. my surroundings during my first listen really shaped my vision of this album in an extremely positive way. however intrigued i was by andersson before this project, i am now intrigued tenfold by her mysterious persona.

fever ray – when i grow up

buy this album on Fever Ray - Fever Ray or amazon

7. girls – album

girls - albumthis album definitely snuck up on me, with its loud guitars and catchy melodies. i think what i like most about it is that the whole album just sounds so much like california. not any specific destination or aspect of california, just california as a whole. perhaps because of christopher owens’ gritty and playful vocals, the album just feels real and genuine. its also one of those albums where my favorite song changes weekly. right now, its “morning light”.

girls – morning light

buy this album on Girls - Album (Bonus Track Version) or amazon

6. phoenix – wolfgang amadeus phoenix

phoenix - wolfgang amadeus phoenixso much to say about this latest offering from phoenix. i still remember my first time hearing “1901″ and how i knew instantly it would become a go-to song when i needed some energy, and then i realized that a lot of the album was the same way. and a seven and a half minute track that was almost all instrumental? sign me up. and just recently i was able to witness first hand that their live performances contain all of the energy of the album (and then some).

phoenix – love like a sunset

buy this album on Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix or amazon

5. grizzly bear – veckatimest

grizzly bear - veckatimesti still have no idea what “veckatimest” is supposed to mean, but i do know that it lived up and surpassed any hype and expectation. a solid offering from the very first notes of “southern point” to the wistful ending of “foreground” and jam packed with classics in between. this is one of those albums that just about any music fan young or old will probably enjoy.

grizzly bear – while you wait for the others

buy this album on Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest or amazon

4. st vincent – actor

st vincent - actorfor annie clarks sophomore album, she broke every musical rule. whatever role you thought an instrument would play, it played the opposite on this one (listen to the flute throughout this song below, for example). and i think thats whats so special about this album. it doesnt really sound like anything youve ever heard before, and its almost uncomfortable to listen to at first, but once you get a grasp on whats going on, you can really apprecaite how one of a kind it is.

st vincent – save me from what i want

buy this album on St. Vincent - Actor or amazon

3. edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros – up from below

edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros - edward sharpe and the magnetic zerosok, so i dont know if this album was technically released this year, or why it seems to have multiple names, but it definitely found its biggest audience this year either way. the album cover describes the album perfectly. old fashioned and awesome. this folky number (allegedly all recorded live on a 24 track machine) is perfect for that friend who just cant get in to any of your music because it was made on a computer and therefore unpure. full of beautiful melodies with stripped down production, its the simplicity of this album that draws you in, and its the catchy songs that will keep you singing. it conjures visions of flower children holding hands singing songs, in a totally non-dirty hippie way.

edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros – come in please

buy this album on Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Up from Below (Bonus Track Version) or amazon

2. the antlers – hospice

the antlers - hospiceone of the most emotional albums, musically and lyrically, in recent memory. the tale of troubled lovers dealing with a terminal illness is told in great detail on this album, complete with the good times, the bad times and everything in between. but much of the time (save for maybe “kettering”), the music doesnt want to make you cry, in fact, it does quite the opposite. in “bear”, for example, the music is like that of a childrens lullaby but builds into something much bigger. and if you think that their live show would be boring and quiet, you would be in for a shock when they nearly blow the speakers out.

the antlers – bear

buy this album on The Antlers - Hospice or amazon

1. miike snow – miike snow

miike snow - miike snowif you read this blog with any regularity, then you probably already knew this was the number one album. miike snow was really my overall musical act of the year, with the great album, two great live performances that i witnessed, and two of the ILLEST remixes of the year. in my opinion, this is the perfect album for people who hear the word “electronic” and run away screaming, because its totally electronic in a completely digestible way. the album starts out with the total pop hit “animal”, then “burial” gives our first tastes of computers, but its subtle and welcome. by “silvia”, youve moved on from dipping a toe in the water to pretty much end up waste deep in electronic goodness, and by then, the water feels fine so youre ready to dive in head first. luckily there are tracks later like “plastic jungle” and “in search of main” to whet your appetite. and the album pales in comparison to their live performances, with their 5-10 minute dj improvs following nearly every song.

yeasayer – ONE

Yeasayer

as ive mentioned before, this year really opened my eyes to the wonder that is yeasayer. it wasnt until this past spring that i realy dove into “all hour cymbals” head first and realized how truly unique this group is even though i first listened to the album quite some time before that. and after seeing them at a few fests this summer, it was clear to me that their new album would be much more rhytmic than the first album. and after giving the album a few listens (for some reason i feel extremely guilty about this, moreso than with any other album leak), this is clearly the case. my initial reaction after completing the first listen was “im not quite sure what just happened, but i think i liked it”. the album is completely upbeat the entire time. theyve really got a knack for producing songs that sound unlike anything else. i like to call it “weird but awesome” — which is a play on my life motto “stupid but fun”. so far im a big fan but we’ll see what happens after a few more listens. i think there will be many mixed reactions, so im curious to hear what others think.

there really isnt a dull moment on this album. its kind of like going to a phish concert and having them NOT play a super slow song just when you think theyre going to take it to the next level right after a raging 15 minute jam that you hoped would never end . refreshing. while there were some great slower tunes on the first album, i think the upbeat is where yeasayer really excels, so im glad they went with that. there are a few tracks im loving on the album so far — ambling alp, madder red, love me girl, and ONE. ONE is probably the most accessible of the tracks on the album (i would say off the bat that “the children” is the least, with its modified vocals that remind me of a much weirder version of the vocals in the knifes “silent shout”. but i am gravitated towards the weird.) and i love how the melody that comes in around 1:15 just fills up the song.

yeasayer at bonnaroo

well this sure was an exciting weekend. thursday night i went to see mstrkrft at the crofoot, one of my favorite venues (if not for the bouncer mentioned below). the opener was grand dad crunk who was pretty excellent. my favorite was when he dropped “little bit” by lykke li over a crazy beat. i dont know who he is, but apparently he is zozzys brother. and apparently everyone in the metro detroit area except myself knows who zozzy is. mstrkrft was rockin as well. they drank a lot on stage and took several pulls of mr. beam. i dont know what else to say other than that. the crofoot is really the best place to take pictures because the stage sort of juts out a little, and the balcony goes all the way to the back of the stage, so you can take some excellent shots where you essentially get the perspective of the performers and get the entire crowd in the shot as well. but only if you make it out alive with your pictures.

things were going fine until just before we left, i decided to hit up the balcony for a few more shots. i got some great ones and just as i took the last shot, the bouncer on the stage shined up his flashlight and told me to stop taking pics, which i did. figured id just take off and go on my way. but as i got to the bottom of the stairs from the balcony, i realized the bouncer had made his way through the entire crowd and was waiting for me at the bottom of the steps, at which point he demanded that i “delete every f***ing picture of that f***ing camera right now”. real nicelike, because clearly i was being raucous and unruly [aside: is it inherent for all bouncers to be on power trips?]. so i did, and was pissed, and left, because i had some crazy good pics. ive since replayed the scenario hundreds of times in my head. had i known he would be waiting for me i would have removed the memory card or took a different exit out of the place (i think theres a back staircase as well). or had i not been caught so off guard, i would have argued with him until he kicked me out, since i was leaving anyway. but, we live and we learn, and that is why i will be trying to get a photo pass to every show from now on, including this past weekends bassnectar show that you will see and hear about later this week (check out the facebook page for a sneak peek at some of the pics. 90% of them are average but i think about 10% are good).

on to the latest in my ever continuing series of new songs that are now old news. this time, its from one of my favorite bands that only has one album out, yeasayer. ive loved their “all hour cymbals” album for quite some time now, but it wasnt until i saw them at bonnaroo (pictured above) this summer that i really “got it” and understood what a weird and unique group they were. i saw them at pitchfork later in the summer which was also great, but theres just something about being in one of those big bonnaroo tents in the middle of the night that adds to the eerieness and excitement of their performances.

i was pretty effin pumped to learn that a new album “odd blood” would be released in 2009, and that they were releasing a free single that very day to whet our appetites. the song is called “ambling alp” and its got just about everything that i love about yeasayer but with a much happier sound than what i think of when i think about “all hour cymbals” (although thats definitely got its happy moments as well). and most of all, its got that unique je ne sais quoi that i seem to find so often with yeasayer, all over a pretty cool tribal sounding beat. definitely among my most anticipated releases of 2010.

flaming lips live

this is a pretty big week of firsts here at dailybeatz. first of all, i wrote a little article about the cost aspect of pitchfork fest which was posted on the windycitizen blog yesterday. this marks my first time writing an article about anything using proper punctuation and capitalization. we’ve also got our first ever interview coming up later this week. and finally, we’ve got our very first giveaway coming up even later in the week. phew, thats a lot to look forward to all in one week, dont you think? that being said, im exhausted, and im going to repost the contents of the story i wrote below, as well as a song by the flaming lips, who closed out the pitchfork festival last night with a bang. you can see the original article here in all its glory.

The Price of Pitchfork Fun

Friday night began my second year at the ever-eclectic Pitchfork Music Festival at Union Park in the great city of Chicago. While I’m still deciding if I prefer this weekend’s sub-70 degree temperatures to last year’s intense heat and humidity, I do know that Pitchfork Fest has remained one of the most affordable festivals, especially relative to the caliber of its acts. At just over $80 for a weekend pass, its among the most affordable 3-day music festivals out there. But what about the costs when you actually arrive at the festival? After spending ridiculous amounts of money at last year’s festival, I decided to provide a list of good deals and things to avoid to keep your wallet in check.

Let’s start out with the good. Perhaps the best value at Pitchfork is the food. While a typical meal will run you $6 or $7, the portions are generous and the options are abundant. I had a messy and delicious $7 pulled turkey sandwich from the Robinson’s cart and will be indulging in a $2 corn on the cob tomorrow. My friends got a huge portion of tempura shrimp and vegetables from the Star of Siam booth that was pretty tasty too. Regardless of what you’re in the mood for, there’s probably a food stand for you.

my delicious pulled turkey sandwich
good tempura shrimp and veggies

Another place to hit up for a potential deal is the Threadless.com booth, located just to the right of the entrance next to the baseball diamonds. They are offering a wheel of deals for whoever wants to spin. You can win anything from a button up to a $25 credit on threadless.com, and I believe at the end of the weekend they’re going to pick a winner who will win 200 free t-shirts.

the threadless.com wheel of deals.

If you’re looking for more wearable goods, check out the Broken Cherry stand. This Chicago boutique offers a wide selection of t-shirts for as low as $5 and $10 each. For a little extra, they will even make a custom shirt with the design of your choice. Last year there was also an InCase booth making custom stenciled spray paint t-shirts that were a big hit with the crowd, but I didn’t see them this year.

Now on to the ugly. The good news is, there really wasn’t much that was very ugly this year. While some of the wares in the vendor tent may seem a little overpriced to some, there weren’t many items that my friends and I purchased that we felt were a ripoff. The most notable change from last year was that the price of beer increased from $4 to $5. While this price increase may seem small, it definitely adds up over the course of the weekend when you’re with a group of 8. The $7 Sparks drinks also seemed a little overpriced. The ice cream cone we got was pretty good, but not for $5.

Perhaps the most costly part of our day was the valuable time we spent waiting in long bathroom lines today. Either there were many more attendees than last year, or far fewer bathrooms, or a combination of both, but if you were a victim of long bathroom lines today, here’s a little tip to save you time on Sunday. Try the port-o-lets between the main entrance and the Connector Stage, and go to the line all the way to the right. We never waited more than 10 minutes once we found that spot.

the venom energy girl!

All in all, our group was pretty happy with the selection of food and non-food vendors that were offered, and we were content with the prices for the most part. As we exited the festival grounds after a phenomenal set by The National, we got one last freebie: a large can of Venom energy drinks, thanks to the lovely lady pictured here (Sorry, I’m new to this whole reporting thing, and I really should have asked for your name, but hopefully you were able to find the article anyway). They came in very handy as mixers for our pre-bar festivities.

i hope you enjoyed my first foray into “journalism”. a few highlights from pitchfork friday and saturday include: running into my long lost friend angelina on the street in wicker park, yeasayer playing “sunrise” and the rains stopped and the sun came out for the first time all day, beirut being incredible live, and the national proving they were worthy headliners. on to todays song. i chose “ego tripping at the gates of hell” by the flaming lips. its one of my favorite flaming lips songs but i dont know why, i just like the way it sounds, so enjoy it. maybe ill update later telling you all whether or not they played this song during their performance if i am not too lazy. in other words dont count on it. [edit: they did not play this song. they did, however, utilize awesomely copious amounts of confetti and giant balloons. at one point, they blew up a giant confetti filled balloon with a leaf blower, the biggest balloon ive ever seen. i went to snap a pic and it exploded just before i took the picture, so i have a great pic of confetti in the shape of a giant balloon. but i wish the singer wouldnt have been such a chatty cathy and played a few more songs instead. and that they didnt play the yoshimi songs so slowly. but, m83 KILLED IT. i am obsessed with them now.]

the national live

getting ready for the second day of pitchfork, and the first full day of music. there are tons of crazy good acts at this years festival and many of my personal favorites, but luckily none of the favorites are playing at the same time so i have less difficult decisions to make than in previous and future festival scenarios. if i hadnt already written about yeasayer, i would definitely feature them again today, because i just cant get enough of them. im kind of curious to see if i still love their weird and unique performance as much when its not at 1am immediately following 3 hours of bruce springsteen, but im pretty sure i will like it as much if not more this time around since im much much more familiar with all of their music. so instead i decided to talk about another favorite band of mine and yours, the national, who will be headlining saturday night.

ive seen the national a few times and its always fun. what do i like most about the national, other than their versatility and the deepest voice by a lead singer ever? probably the honesty in their lyrics. they are just very true to life and real. i think this is especially evident in todays track “baby we’ll be fine” in which the story is told of a man who feels like he just cant do anything right and who is struggling with making something of himself. probably my favorite song by the national. just listen to the lyrics in this one and tell me if they sound like a familiar struggle. and the music is so great too. i love the ends of each verse, starting with “all we gotta do is be brave and be kind”. it also mentions my favorite drink, the jack and coke, so bonus points for that. and the music aint too bad neither. if you arent convinced about brutally honest lyrics, just listen to “karen”.
